Description
An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource

It suggests that the concept of the uncanny that pushes our understanding of spatio-temporality may be a useful device for approaching the methodological need to reconcile what we can and cannot experience/visualize. Viewing the mapping projects around Calcutta in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries through the lens of the uncanny offers us the possibility of such a reconciliation.

Description
An account of the resource

An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource

An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher:

This cultural study of public space examines the cityscape of Taipei, Taiwan, in rich descriptive prose. Contemplating a series of seemingly banal subjects - maps, public art, parks - Joseph Allen peels back layers of obscured history to reveal forces that caused cultural objects to be celebrated, despised, destroyed, or transformed as Taipei experienced successive regime changes and waves of displacement. In this thoughtful stroll through the city, we learn to look beyond surface ephemera, moving from the general to the particular, to see sociocultural phenomena in their historical and contemporary contexts.

Joseph R. An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher:

Few other cities can compare with Rome's history of continuous habitation, nor with the survival of so many different epochs in its present. This volume explores how the city's past has shaped the way in which Rome has been built, rebuilt, represented and imagined throughout its history.

Bringing together scholars from the disciplines of architectural history, urban studies, art history, archaeology and film studies, this book comprises a series of studies on the evolution of the city of Rome and the ways in which it has represented and reconfigured itself from the medieval period to the present day. Moving from material appropriations such as spolia in the medieval period, through the cartographic representations of the city in the early modern period, to filmic representation in the twentieth century, we encounter very different ways of making sense of the past across Rome's historical spectrum. The broad chronological arrangement of the chapters, and the choice of themes and urban locations examined in each, allows the reader to draw comparisons between historical periods.

An imaginative approach to the study of the urban and architectural make-up of Rome, this volume will be valuable not only for historians of art and architecture, but also for students of cultural history and film studies.

Contents:

Foreword
Preface
Dorigen Caldwell - Introduction: Continuities of place
Caroline J. An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher :

This book concerns the city and the 'devices' that define the urban environment by their presence, representation or interpretation. The texts offer an interdisciplinary discourse and critique of the complex systems, artifacts, interventions and evidences that can inform our understanding of urban territories; on surfaces, in the margins or within voids. The diverse media of arts practices as well as commercial branding are used to explore narratives that reveal latent characteristics of urban situations that conventional architectural inquiry is unable to do.

The subjects covered are presented within a wider framework of urban theory into which are embedded case study examples that outline the practices, processes and interpretations of each theme. The chapters provide a contemporary reading of urban socio-cultural conditions using 'mapping' as a lens to explore and communicate the social phenomena and lived experiences of the dynamic and temporal city. Mapping is developed as a form of critical instrumentality to expose, record and contribute to the understanding of the singular essences of space, place and networks by thematic, cognitive and experiential modes of investigation.

Richard Brook is a Senior Lecturer at the Manchester School of Architecture.
Nick Dunn is Principal Lecturer at the Manchester School of Architecture and leads, with Richard Brook, the Re_Map unit, researching the mapping and representation of urban networks, data and conditions.

Abstract from the publisher :

This ground-breaking volume brings together contributions from scholars across a range of disciplines (including literary studies, history, geography and archaeology) to investigate questions of space, place and identity in the medieval city. Using Chester as a case study - with attention to its location on the border between England and Wales, its rich multi-lingual culture and surviving material fabric - the essays seek to recover the experience and understanding of the urban space by individuals and groups within the medieval city, and to offer new readings from the vantage-point of twenty-first century disciplinary and theoretical perspectives.

An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher :

An illustrated cartographic history of the City of Angels from the colonial era to the present. Los Angeles inhabits a place of the mind as much as it does a physical geographic space. A land of palm trees and movie stars, sunshine and glamour, the city exists in the imagination as a paradise; of course, the reality is much bigger than this. Through seventy reproductions of seminal and historic documents, Los Angeles in Maps presents the evolution of this almost mythical place. Maps featured include historic Spanish explorers’ charts from as early as 1791, as well as more recent topographic surveys, tourist guides, real estate maps, bird’s-eye views, and more. Like the course of the Los Angeles River, the book winds through essential terrain: the discovery of oil, the rise of Hollywood, the streetcar system, Los Angeles Harbor, earthquakes, sprawl, and splendor.

Glen Creason is map librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library and co-curator of the landmark exhibition L.A.

Description
An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher :

Imagine a city invisible to the human eye and only manifested by its non-visual urban phenomena. What shape will it take? If these new urban forms are represented as images, do they become new maps of the city?

Examining representations of the city not usually visible to the naked eye, The Exposed City takes textual urban data and transforms it into architectural visions. Criminal activities, population densities, transportation patterns, public surveillance, cell phone usage, air quality readings and other spatial statistics all become new maps of the city.

The ‘unseen’ elements of the city are exposed in innovative maps throughout the book, which are complimented by interviews with Winy Mass and James Corner, in addition to sections by Richard Saul Wurman, the SENSEAble City Lab group and one of the founders of Google Earth.

Showing new ways to map invisible urban information, Amoroso’s book is ideal for those landscape architecture, urban design and geography students along with professionals interested in the theoretical and practical issues of representing the hidden city through spatial mapping.
