Abstract from the publisher :

This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture offers a current and authoritative reference to urbanization in the American South from the eighteenth century to the twenty-first, surveying important southern cities individually and examining the various issues that shape patterns of urbanization from a broad regional perspective.

Looking beyond the post-World War II era and the emergence of the Sunbelt economy to examine recent and contemporary developments, the 48 thematic essays consider the ongoing remarkable growth of southern urban centers, new immigration patterns (such as the influx of Latinos and the return-migration of many African Americans), booming regional entrepreneurial activities with global reach (such as the rise of the southern banking industry and companies such as CNN in Atlanta and FedEx in Memphis), and mounting challenges that result from these patterns (including population pressure and urban sprawl, aging and deteriorating infrastructure, gentrification, and state and local budget shortfalls). The 31 topical entries focus on individual cities and urban cultural elements, including Mardi Gras, Dollywood, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Description
An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource

Textes de Jean-Pierre Albert, Patrick Arabeyre, Jean-Pierre Barraqué, Laurence Bernard-Pradelle, François Bordes, Patrick Boucheron, Édouard Bouyé, Francesco Campennì, Sophie Cassagnes-Brouquet, Martine Charageat, Philippe Chareyre, Michel De Dobbeleer, María Isabel Del Val Valdivieso, Bernard Doumerc, Véronique Duché-Gavet, Caroline Fargeix, Valérie Fasseur, Michelle Fournié, Patrick Gilli, María Asenjo Gonzalez, Armand Jamme, Philippe Jansen, Véronique Lamazou-Duplan, Christine Mazzoli-Guintard, Fermín Miranda Garcia, Rafael Narbona Vizcaíno, Olivier Richard, Véronique Rouchon-Mouilleron, Adeline Rucquoi, Josiane Teyssot, Bram Vannieuwenhuyze.

From the editorial by Christopher Dummitt :

This issue of the London Journal of Canadian Studies takes up the subject of gender and the Canadian city. Most of the articles here were first presented at the London Conference for Canadian Studies’ Gender and the City conference that was held in February 2006.

The essays in this collection demonstrate the ways cities are useful places to look at the changing gendered experiences of Canadians, and also of the ways cities themselves have become symbols of gender and culture. The essays also blend history and literature, beginning with three articles on history and then moving on to three literary pieces.

In nineteenth-century Paris, passionate involvement with revolution turned the city into an engrossing object of cultural speculation. For writers caught between an explosive past and a bewildering future, revolution offered a virtuoso metaphor by which the city could be known and a vital principle through which it could be portrayed. In this engaging book, Priscilla Ferguson locates the originality and modernity of nineteenth-century French literature in the intersection of the city with revolution. A cultural geography, Paris as Revolution "reads" the nineteenth-century city not in literary works alone but across a broad spectrum of urban icons and narratives. Ferguson moves easily between literary and cultural history and between semiotic and sociological analysis to underscore the movement and change that fueled the powerful narratives defining the century, the city, and their literature. In her understanding and reconstruction of the guidebooks of Mercier, Hugo, Vallès, and others, alongside the novels of Flaubert, Hugo, Vallès, and Zola, Ferguson reveals that these works are themselves revolutionary performances, ones that challenged the modernizing city even as they transcribed its emergence.

Abstract from the publisher :

During its long history as the French colonial city par excellence, Algiers was the site of recurrent conflicts between colonizer and colonized. Through architecture and urban forms confrontations were crystallized, cultural identities were defined, and social engineering programs were shaped and challenged. In this pathbreaking book, Zeynep Çelik reads the city of Algiers as the site of social, political, and cultural conflicts during the 132 years of French occupation and argues that architecture and urban forms are integral components of the colonial discourse. Algiers' city planning, based on what Çelik calls "the trial-and-error" model of French colonial urbanism, included the fragmentation of the casbah, ambitious Beaux Arts schemes to create European forms of housing, master plans inspired by high modernism, and comprehensive regional plans. Eventually a dramatic housing shortage led all planning efforts to be centered on the construction of large-scale residential enclaves. French architects based their designs for domestic space on the concept of the "traditional house," itself an interdisciplinary colonial concept intertwined with the discourse on Algerian women. Housing also offered the French colonizers a powerful presence in a country where periodic resistance to the occupation eventually culminated in a seven-year war of liberation and an end to French rule. Extensively illustrated with photographs, maps, and housing plans, Çelik's book presents a fascinating example of colonial urban planning. Algiers comes alive as a city that reflected all the conflicts of colonialism while embracing innovation.
