Le commerce dans tous ses états. Espaces marchands et enjeux de société
Subject
The topic of the resource
commerces, espaces marchands, division sociale de l'espace, renouvellement urbain, mobilité, modes de vie, périurbain, gouvernance
Description
An account of the resource
Il travaille actuellement sur un contrat européen Urban net Chronotope – Time and space planning for a resilient city.

Spectacular reconstructions: Ways of seeing and the politics of recovery in American urban disasters

Description
An account of the resource
Abstract from the distributor :
Kevin Rozario uses the two most devastating urban catastrophes in American history, the Chicago fire of 1871 and the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, to explore how extraordinary recovery from sudden ruination can be both compelling and inspiring. He discusses industrialization and cultural responses to disaster, with analysis of narrative accounts of disaster as well as performative accounts that have served to reassure Americans that new and improved urban environments can come of disaster. He further explores how the "mass consumer culture" of America has shaped American responses to events of September 11th.
Kevin Rozario is Assistant Professor in the American Studies program at Smith College. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Yale University, and has previously taught at Oberlin and Wellesley colleges.

Description
An account of the resource
Abstract from the distributor :
This lecture places the attack on the World Trade Center in the context of New York's history as a place that is seemingly destined to be destroyed and rebuilt with stunning regularity. It explores three ways of looking at a central experience, and cultural trope, about New York City: that it is a city of creative destruction, regularly destroying and rebuilding itself. Professor Page begins with a discussion of extraordinary moments of destruction, both natural and human-made (from fires and blizzards, to acts of terrorism), and then argues that it is the "regular" processes of creative destruction - through private real estate development and government urban renewal - which are far more important in shaping both New York's physical organization as well as its cultural image. Finally, he explores how the imagination of New York's destruction - in art, literature, and cinema - is not only at the heart of New York life but of American culture as a whole.
Max Page is Assistant Professor of Architecture and History at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he teaches urban, architectural, and public history.

Abstract from the distributor :
Modern Paris was indelibly shaped by the rebuilding project ordered by Napoleon III and carried out by Baron Haussmann in the 1850s and '60s. The large-scale demolition of whole neighborhoods in central Paris, coupled with a boom in industrial development outside the city, cemented a class division between center and periphery that has persisted into the twenty-first century. Curiously, this division is the obverse of the arrangement of most American cities, in which the inner city is typically impoverished while the suburbs are wealthy.

Islington, Docklands, Clapham and East London have all experienced huge changes in recent years through social and aesthetic 'makeovers' as areas have been regenerated and wealthier residents have moved in. Gentrification has its supporters as well as its opponents. It can bring wealth, social and environmental improvements, but it can also displace or exclude communities and bring small businesses to ruin. This discussion looks at the impact of gentrification on the demographics and shape of London, as well as the winners and losers. The speakers included Professor Chris Hamnett (King's College, London), Tom Hunter (photographer) and David Partridge (Joint Chief Executive, Argent). Event curated and chaired by Robert Elms (award-winning writer and broadcaster).

The RSA and the Centre for London at Demos gather a panel of expert commentators at the RSA to mark the 50th anniversary of Jane Jacobs’ landmark book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

Jane Jacobs’ book, first published in 1961, transformed the way we think about our cities and helped discredit the then near universal belief in slum clearance, high rise housing projects and urban motorways.

Building on close observation of her own Greenwich Village neighbourhood, Jacobs mounted a thorough and original defence of 'traditional' city forms against the dominant approaches to urban planning in her day, including the 'garden city' movement and Modernist city planning. She argued that dense, mixed income mix-used neighbourhoods, designed around short city blocks with busy amenity-lined streets and small parks, had a huge range of benefits unappreciated by modern urban planners who mistakenly associated the old city with all the evils of the 19th century slum. Jacobs claimed that cities could be great engines of cohesion, innovation, and prosperity, but only where they were properly led and managed.

But has her thinking stood the test of time? What did she get right and what wrong? And in particular what are the implications of her insights for London, the UK's largest, and most unequal city?
Please join us for a comparative and historical analysis of the gentrification of the Near North Side of Chicago.

Professor Bodnar will examine the communities that have replaced the Cabrini-Green housing ‘projects’ and the proliferation of similar kinds of residential planned developments -- particularly in US and European cities. This horizontal analysis will be complemented by discussion of the history of gentrification on the Near North Side and the unfolding of current redevelopment initiatives, which signify a new scale and configuration of generalized gentrification as it has come to be known. This line of inquiry also focuses on the public-private interface.

Organisers' description :

Can London cope with its future growth? Is it really Europe's only global city? What is the impact of massive regeneration projects?

These are some of the questions that civic leaders, city-builders, architects and academics from around the world asked when they meet in London from 11 to 13 November 2005. The Mayors of Washington DC, Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Edinburgh joined world-renowned urbanists Richard Rogers, Rem Koolhaas and Saskia Sassen to debate the future of a city facing momentous growth.

Core themes included how quality of life can be maintained by promoting health; and city environments that work for people of different generations and incomes.

To better understand the social impacts of current trends in London’s labour markets, housing, transport and public life, the Urban Age conference investigated the following key projects in North, South, West and East London:

1. The redevelopment of White City and the formation of a knowledge-based economic cluster in West London
2. The transformation of King’s Cross
3. The Olympic Village and its legacy in the development of affordable housing in diverse and attractive neighbourhoods in the Lower Lea Valley in East London
4. The regeneration of Elephant & Castle and the reintegration of residential communities to the city centre in South London

Chapitre I : Regards d’habitants

An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher:

Most of the professional training, thinking and strategies of architects, urban designers and planners, are strictly three-dimensional. In reality of course the city is four dimensional, and one needs to acknowledge the influence of time in planning and design strategies. Similarly, there has been relatively little analysis of the importance of interim, short-term or ‘meanwhile’ activities in urban areas. In an era of increasing pressure on scarce resources, we cannot wait for long-term solutions to vacancy or dereliction. Instead, we need to view temporary uses as increasingly legitimate and important in their own right. They can be a powerful tool through which we can drip-feed initiatives for incremental change – as and when we have the resources – while being guided by a loose-fit vision.

Peter Bishop and Lesley Williams explore the growing interest among practitioners at the cutting edge of architecture, urban design and regeneration, in temporary, interim, ‘pop-up’ or ‘meanwhile’ uses for land and buildings in our urban areas. They explore the origins and the social, economic and technological drivers behind this phenomenon, and its place within modern planning theory and practice. The Temporary City challenges our preoccupation with long-term strategies and masterplans and questions our ability to achieve these in the face of increasing resource constraints and political and economic uncertainty. The book includes sixty-eight diverse case studies from Europe and North America which illustrate the range of temporary use opportunities and the benefits that these can bring.

This is essential reading for all those struggling to address the current problems of urban renewal in an era of great change. It offers a prism through which to view the city as a rich mosaic of time-limited, but inspiring urban interventions.

Description
An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher:

In recent years, major sporting and cultural events such as the Olympic Games have emerged as significant elements of public policy, particularly in efforts to achieve urban regeneration. As well as opportunities arising from new venues, these events are viewed as a way of stimulating investment, gaining civic engagement and publicizing progress to assist the urban regeneration process more generally. However, the pursuit of regeneration involving events is a practice that is poorly understood, controversial and risky.

Events and Urban Regeneration is the first book dedicated to the use of events in regeneration. It explores the relationship between events and regeneration by analyzing a range of cities and a range of sporting and cultural events projects. It considers various theoretical perspectives to provide insight into why major events are important to contemporary cites. It examines the different ways that events can assist regeneration, as well as problems and issues associated with this unconventional form of public policy. It identifies key issues faced by those tasked with using events to assist regeneration and suggests how practices could be improved in the future.

The book adopts a multi-disciplinary perspective, drawing together ideas from the geography, urban planning and tourism literatures, as well as from the emerging events and regeneration fields. It illustrates arguments with a range of international case studies placed within and at the end of chapters to show positive outcomes that have been achieved and examples of high profile failures.

This timely book is essential reading for students and practitioners who are interested in events, urban planning, urban geography and tourism.

Description
An account of the resource

Organisers' description:

The UN’s Development target to improve the lives of 100 million ‘slum’ dwellers has been inappropriately communicated as a target to free cities of slums. Cities with ‘Slums’: from informal settlement eradication to a right to the city in Africa traces the proliferation of this misunderstanding across several African countries, and explains how current urban policy, with its heightened focus on urban competitiveness and associated urban policy norms, encourages this interpretation. The cases it presents cover a range of conflicts between urban residents and the local and national authorities that seek to curtail their ‘right to the city’.

It offers disturbing insights into post-apartheid South Africa’s urban trajectory, with uneasy parallels in other African countries, both in the form of ‘slum’ eradication drives and in ambitious, but flawed, flagship pilot projects.

The book aims to inspire a wider understanding of, sympathy for and solidarity with struggles against informal settlement eradication in South Africa and beyond, and argues that the right to the city, in its original conception, has direct relevance for urban contestations in Africa today.

Marie Huchzermeyer is Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
