Abstract from the distributor:
 
This talk proposes to explore the complex origins of a unique cosmopolitan culture in 1980s Hong Kong, which among other things represented the historical intersection of a changing colonialism, divisive nationalist struggles and the advent of a modern world system, that will focus particular attention (in situ) to the intellectual and cultural influences contributing to the emergence of a "multicultural" as well as "urban" and "popular" mass mediated culture there.

Allen Chun is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at ARI, based at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, where he is a Research Fellow, and the Institute of Social and Cultural Research, National Chiaotung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, where he is a Joint Professor.
