Organisers' description:
The African Centre for Cities awards a few new and roll-over masters and doctoral bursaries each year. The awards are for UCT students whose dissertations are on urban-related issues in Africa.
The bursaries are intended to support talented researchers, and to help generate excellent urban research at UCT with the help of the ACC's resources and connections. In the spirit of interdisciplinary exchange, bursary recipients are expected to participate in seminars, workshops and other ACC academic meetings. Full-time bursaries for 2012 are up to a maximum R85,000 for masters and R120,000 for a PhD (of which R12,000 is for presentation of a paper at a local conference). Part-time funding is half these amounts. Funding for the second year of a Masters, and for the third year of a PhD, is dependent on availability of funds and evidence of satisfactory progress. Supervisors and students wanting roll-over awards must motivate for extension by the end of the first year of award. Bursary award criteria: - Funding is offered to students whose research is linked to the ACC research agenda. - Individuals who already hold a degree at the same level as that for which they are applying are not eligible. - In awarding bursaries, preference will be given to previously disadvantaged South African students, but other categories will also be considered. Applicants of any race, gender and nation may apply. - Funding will be granted on the basis of academic merit. - Funding is only guaranteed for one year. Extensions may be granted for a further two years for a PhD and for a further year for a Masters student, subject to satisfactory progress (as documented in an MoU and confirmed by the Supervisor and HoD) and depending on funding availability. - Bursaries are granted for degrees undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. Masters degrees can be undertaken as full research degrees, or as part course-work and part dissertation degrees. - Applicants should be able to show that they have applied to other sources for funding, and should be able to provide documentary responses to these applications. - Bursary awards will be confirmed once a research proposal has been submitted and accepted by the Supervisor and HoD (preliminary proposal in the case of a PhD). - Conference funding will be granted only after conference organisers have approved the Abstract. - Bursars are expected to attend relevant ACC seminars, and may present work at 'brown bags', seminars or workshops. - A bursary award does not include desk space in the ACC, or computers or other research equipment. - The ACC must be acknowledged in the dissertation, in conference presentations, and in published papers. - Awards are at the sole discretion of the ACC. Interested and eligible students should send applications (motivation, CV; outline of Masters or PhD; registration dates; supervisor's letter of support & agreement to criteria) to Maryam Waglay, ACC Administrative Assistant, Room 2.11, Engeo Building, Upper Campus, by 13 April 2012. Only hardcopy applications will be considered. Awards will be routed through the UCT post-graduate funding office. The ACC will not enter into correspondence with unsuccessful applicants. |
