In the French urban peripheries, about a thousand districts said «disadvantaged» or «sensitive» are registered, in which are concentrated the most serious social difficulties, particularly unemployment and deliquency. The urban violence (defined as the whole attacks against institutions and officers that are representative of the State and the various authorities) is being significantly developed since the early 1990s. From original sources of the ministère de l'Intérieur (the French «Home Office»), the author attempts to delimit this phenomenon of anti-institutional violence, to understand its level, its forms and its evolution, and to find its geographical distribution in France. A strong but non exclusive relationship is seen between drug and violence demonstrations.</text>

A recent research used data available in the 1989 French Education Longitudinal Study to investigate differences in school performance and school trajectories between foreign children, immigrants' children, children born in France from parents born abroad and other pupils. In this research, eight criteria were used to approach the population under focus : nationality (2 or 7 categories), birth place, number of schooling years outside France, language spoken at home, membership group of the pupil and number of foreign attributes. The paper presents the general methodology of the research, establishes systematic comparisons between criteria in order to evaluate their pertinence for sociology of education and summarizes the main results of the research.</text>

India seems to be one of the most infected states by the Human Immunodeficiency Vi rus (HIV) inside Asia. However, the government serological data reveal a problem of under-report. To overcome this lack of information, a sample has been collected in one of the most contaminated cities of the country : Bombay. The data study at different scales reflects disparities of HIV spread in the different areas of the metropolis. «Pathogenic» places for decades have first been infected. Moreover the intra-urban analysis of one of the red-light areas (Kamathipura) reveals a contamination of the population linked with accessibility as well as cultural factors. In view of this infection, the extremist Hindu government of the State has used segregative actions against infected people which might create important tensions in the future.</text>

India was the first country to adopt a restrictive population policy but fertility remained for a long time at a high level. The total fertility rate is now a little bit higher than 3 children per woman, which is the fertility world average. The decline of the fertility affects all the states but sometimes important regional disparities remain between North and South of India. In Kerala the number of children per woman is less than 2 and in Uttar Pradesh close to 5. These contrasts between states are largely related to the level of alphabetisation of women.</text>

<text>Turcs in Cheratte: Spatial Concetration and Social Integration Strategies in an Industrial Suburb of Liège (Belgium).

This article evaluates the level of socio-economic integration of the Turkish population living in a mining-village close to the city of Liège (Belgium). It makes use of the results from the most recent population census as well as specific surveys. It is found that, contrary to accepted ideas that see the Turkish community as being hermetically sealed against integration, such a process is actually in operation amongts the Turks of Cheratte. The variables considered include demographic structure and evolution, employment and unemployment, household income and expenditure, education and knowledge of French, residential mobility, housing conditions, and psycho-social indicators. The evolution of these variables shows the willingness of the respondents to accommodate themselves to the socio-cultural norms of the host society. However, the principal limits to the integration model for this population relate to unemployment and household debt.</text>

<text>This paper examines the consequences of geographical mobility on family structures and nuptiality, and more specifically on endogamy, through a comparison of heads of households who migrated and of those who never left their native village. Slight differences are observed, but for those who migrated, neither the traditional model of family nor nuptiality are influenced by migration.
For the second generation, things are more complex. Children of migrants spending their holidays in the village are different from those born to migrants who definitively returned to Portugal, who in turn tend to be close to those born to non migrants. As shown by data on education, citizenship, place of residence, children living abroad seem to wish to integrate into the host country, but this does not imply a rejection of their country of origin, as proved by the frequency of visits to the villages.</text>

According to which criteria do the Benineses choose among the rather diversified modern health care services now available ? This hypothesis was checked by studying over a two-years-period the structure, by sex, age, type of disease and place of origin, of the users of all the modern health care services (public, private and church supported) from the Ouessè district (Central Benin). It was found out that, the weaker the perceived therapeutical efficiency, the more numerous are the children and adult male users, the smaller the attraction area and the narrower the range of treated diseases with in parallel a strong increase in paludism cases.</text>

In the population of France appear great general trends, as aging, increase, of the lifespan, périurbanisation, ...However, according to the regions, evolutions are different. Thus, densities show an increase of the regional divergences. On the other hand, the spreading of a low fecondity and a failing birth-rate entail a lowering of the divergences between the regional demographic behaviours. But the regional migratory sys- terns appear much diversified and have, among others, important consequences on the distribution by ages of the populations of the regions.

                <text>Slovenes in Austria..

Slovenes in Austria are one of Europe's smaller national minorities, officially numbering 17,000 but estimated at around 45,000. Over the past 150 years they have lived through practically all forms of cohabitation between the two nations; from initial tolerance to later economic, cultural and political conflict, followed by military clashes, planned assimilation and attempts to forcibly disperse the minority, to the re- establishment of harmony and cooperation. During this time, the process of modernisation was carried out in three stages : agrarian, industrial and tertiary. As the majority society and the settlement area itself changed, the size of the Slovene minority fell radically as a result of intensive assimilation (from 95,700 in 1846 to 14,100 in 1991, according to figures of 107,000 and 45,000 respectively). But the minority reorganised its social structure and adapted to the new conditions of postindustrial urban society and intensive cross-border trade, forming the necessary structure in the border area. It is on this that it has based its increasing stability.</text>

The immigrants' children who have benefited from physical education classes at school generally find through this channel a means of fitting in with the behavioural patterns of the youth of the country which has become their homeland. Sport thus becomes a means of integration allowing many of them to take part in various forms of sports culture. Our aim here is to suggest a global approach to the phenomenon considering the changes in the socio-spatial integration of immigrants' children living in France and the plans implemented in the areas where their numbers are exceedingly high.</text>

<text>Five Geographical Surveys of the Japanese Demography.

Although the Japanese demography has aroused worrying or excessive comments among Western observers, its evolution is largely similar to those usually known in the World, as we can see through five cases. The demographic transition took place quite early, almost achieved during the 1920's, and the post-war baby boom did not challenge it. Although a stabilization was engaged during the 1970's, a rural depopulation started again during the 1980' s towards the Megalopolis and especially the Great Tokyo. Today the ageing of the Japanese population is not a stricto sensu demographic problem but a social and geographical one. Because of a need of workforce in the Megalopolis and of the attraction of the Japan's eldorado myth in Asia, an immigration of Asians is growing in Japan. Despite stereotypes, the suicide rate in Japan is not too high, and it concerns first the deep rural areas.</text>

<text>Occupational Activity of Portuguese Immigrants in France

Taking advantage of the important needs of skilled labour force in the industrial sector during the sixties, native men of Portugal easily found a first job in France. 90 percent of them were employed as workers, half as unskilled ones. The structure of their jobs has been changed, between their arrival and 1992, like whole labour force in France : less workers, especially unskilled ones, and more middle management employees. About 10 percent of them, may be expecting to avoid unemployment, have turned self employed. Many of the native women of Portugal have employment, but they seem more confined to their condition. Their present jobs have been mainly domestic ones. The important net of relationships (both family and compatriots) inside the Portuguese community provides them a great help for that sort of job. As regards the 20-29 year-old people, either immigrants or born in France, they meet the same difficulties in finding a job as those the whole youth meet. Their mainly characteristics are in the choice of short studies and in their job structure quite similar to the one of their parents. Both adult or young natives of Portugal seem to have professionally well enough integrated the French society</text>

<text>Migratory Process and Present Trends of the Lebanese Immigration in France.

The Lebanese immigration in France, relatively recent in its present volume, was at the beginning a temporary one. Year after year, the complicated and long history of the civil war transformed it into a definite immigration. Despite the end of the civil war and the return of peace in the home land since 1990, the politic and socio- economic crisis persists. Contrary to certain parts of the Lebanese diaspora, we find a significant movement of return concerning the Lebanese diaspora in France. The predominance of the Maronites, who made of France their politic and economic bastion, explains this phenomenon.</text>

<text>Notions of Home the Caribbean Migrants in France.

The study of the Caribbean migration to metropolitan France, its history, characteristics and recent evolution, reveals a highly complex reality. This paper is the fruit of reflections on the questions of emigration, circulation and return migration between the Caribbean and France. Here the relationship that migrants living in metropolitan France maintain with the two poles of attachment within a «transatlantic space» is examined using two contrasting data sources analyzed in parallel : first, the results of a guied interview survey, and secondly, preliminary analyses of the INSEE survey «Migrations des dom» (Migrations of the French overseas Departments) (1991-1992).</text>
