This contemporary urban form, imported from the United States, is part of the last stage of modernizing the city. The methods used are based on analysing the sensory phenomena captured by several techniques in situ, such as participant observation, sound recordings, in addition to citizens’ speech in the form of “commented walks”. In the first phase of analysis, the research identifies the relevant sensory phenomena which are the result of a western urban concept inhabited by oriental society. In the second part we analyse the sensory structure of this urban model by revealing the way in which the body, hearing and sight traverse the various spatial borders which make up this form of habitat. In this article we propose to describe the ambiance in one of the oldest cosmopolitan neighbourhoods of Paris, La Goutte d’Or. We will analyse the currents driving public life, which has clung to this space despite “urban renewal” policies spanning 30 years. The neighbourhood operates as a centrality, a hub of networks for immigrant communities, and the street here has been turned into an arena for social interaction and informal business activities. It is both a source of cultural inspiration and rejuvenation, and a popular “cosmo-political” scene, a multi-faceted world subjected to constant tension. We study the spontaneous gatherings prompted day after day by the spectacle of the street, the dynamics of communication and concern stirred up by public life. We see that this ambiance is a many-sided forge, the focus of much attention, dispersing opinions, redefining thresholds, a forge crystallizing a variety of publics mutually concerned by what they can or cannot share. This article questions the idea that atmospheres might emerge from the perceptions of the body and might not be linked in any case to the language. The analysis is based on a novel by Henri Bosco : Malicroix. This novel offers a narrative whose island setting is under the dual and concurrent influences of the language of the Other (domestic and epistemic orders) and of an elementary world. Thanks to a deleuzian conceptual framework (“desert island”), the analysis puts under the light how a double inflection given to the language resizes the experience of the milieu in the sense of a broader embodiment with the elements, suitable for the emergence of moments of atmosphere. This research was developed from a field work centered on a videographic recording of studied spaces. The challenge is to provide quantitative answers to these questions: how is colour organized? How does it develop a structure in the city? Our research investigates stable colour typologies. The obvious lack of effective tools for the chromatic assessment in the field of urban design was the main motivation of this research. The protocol is illustrated within the study of the “rue des Anglais” in Liège (Belgium) and the stability of the method is conducted through a series of validations. La promotion de technologies climatiques de ce type fait partie d’un processus de politisation des « atmosphères » qui conjugue l’impératif environnemental de réduire l’impact que nous avons sur notre planète avec nos expériences quotidiennes de l’espace, par le biais d’une modification de l’expression visuelle. Nous montrerons que la résistance danoise face aux nouvelles technologies d’éclairage est ancrée dans une préférence culturelle pour les espaces « intimes », dits « hyggelig » et nous fournit un moyen de mieux comprendre la vie sociale de la lumière. Partant de la mauvaise qualité des éclairages diffusés par les ampoules économiques, nous montrerons comment les atmosphères sont façonnées par, et parfois, contre les ambitions politiques. This article discusses the implementation of energy saving light bulbs in Denmark. It argues that such new climate technologies are part of an increasingly politicization of ‘atmosphere’ by linking the environmental imperative to decelerate impact on the earth’s atmosphere with the everyday experiences of space through changes in visual expression. The article shows how enmity against new lighting technologies in Denmark is based on cultural notions and preferences towards shaping ‘cosy spaces’, and thereby offers insight into the social life of light. By focusing on the poor lighting quality of the energy saving light bulbs, the article shows how atmospheres are shaped by, and sometimes in contrast to, political ambitions.
