Like other West European countries, the Netherlands are facing a growing uneasiness about its changing demographics. It is within this context that animated discussions concerning immigrant neighbourhoods dominate. The general opinion is that living in such neighbourhoods hinders the 'integration' of immigrants into Dutch society. This book contributes to the academic and policy debate by not only examining the effects of ethnic concentration, but also by finding out how people are sorted into neighbourhoods. Bringing together different bodies of literature, this book offers a more holistic view of the creation of ethnic residential segregation and its potential significance for individual life chances.

De nombreux CAUE ont décidé de s’organiser et de créer un atelier au sein de l’UPAUE pour aborder ces questionnements à travers un cycle de réunions d’échanges et de séminaires de formation. <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

This book brings together two bodies of research on urban Africa that have tended to be separate: Studies of urban land use and housing, and studies of work and livelihoods. Africa’s future will be to an increasing extent urban. Nevertheless, the inherited legal, institutional and financial arrangements for managing urban development are inadequate. The recent decades of neo-liberal political and economic reforms have increased social inequality across urban space. Access to employment, shelter and services is precarious for most urban residents. Extra-legal housing and unregistered economic activities proliferate. Basic urban services are increasingly provided informally. The result is the phenomenal growth of the informal city and extra-legal activities. How do urban residents see these activities? What do they accomplish through them? How can these “informal” cities be governed?

The case studies are drawn from a diverse set of cities on the African continent. A central theme is how practices that from an official standpoint are illegal or extra-legal do not only work but are considered legitimate by the actors concerned. Another is how the informal city is not exclusively the domain of the poor, but also provides shelter and livelihoods for better-off segments of the urban population.

Contents :

Preface
Introduction - Karen Tranberg Hansen and Mariken Vaa

SECTION I: LOCALITY, PLACE, AND SPACE
Sharing Public Space in Pointe-Noire, Congo-Brazzaville : Immigrant Fishermen and a Multinational Oil Company - Gabriel Tati
The Right to Stay in Cato Crest : Formality and Informality in a South African Development Project - Knut G. The American metropolis has been transformed over the past quarter century. Cities have turned inside out, with rapidly growing suburbs evolving into edge cities and technoburbs. But not all suburbs are alike. In Shaping Suburbia, Paul Lewis argues that a fundamental political logic underlies the patterns of suburban growth and argues that the key to understanding suburbia is to understand the local governments that control it - their number, functions, and power. Using innovative models and data analyses, Lewis shows that the relative political fragmentation of a metropolitan area plays a key part in shaping its suburbs.
Inspired by the cultural histories of Walter Benjamin and Wolfgang Schivelbusch, Expositions explores the spatial and cultural logic of Haussmann's sweeping Paris boulevards, classic novels by Balzac and Zola, the Bon Marché department store, and the poetry of Baudelaire.

Inspired by the cultural history of Walter Benjamin, Hamon investigates the phenomenon of the Exposition universelle, with its spectacular public spaces. He relates how the entire urban landscape became a stage while the culture of the image attained ever greater currency in the daily experience of advertising, fashion, photography, and illustration. Masterfully interweaving cultural, architectural, and literary history with semiotic and rhetorical analysis (exposition is also the foundation of novelistic practice), Hamon offers a virtuoso study of a key moment in the genesis of cultural modernity. His Expositions will attract readers in literature, architecture, history, and cultural and urban studies.

Philippe Hamon is Professor Emeritus at the University of the New Sorbonne (Paris III) and a specialist in literary theory.

</text>

This atlas offers a unique survey of global trade networks and their impact on metropolitan space. It documents a total of 101 metropolises, analysing them in easy-to-read ground plans. It also includes index numbers and tables regarding such aspects as population, density, pollution, travel time, data traffic, air and water travel and the size of Central Business Districts. Its unexpected combination of ground plans and statistics makes this atlas a unique work of reference where for the first time metropolitan areas like Beijing, Lagos, London, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo can be compared with one another and in terms of their position in the global urban network.

Arjen van Susteren is a designer and researcher and a consultant for Regional and Metropolitan Development at Coolhaven Urban Engineers.

</text>

Abstract from the publisher :

As the hubs of economic activity, cities drive the vast majority of the world’s energy use and are major contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. Because they are home to major infrastructure and highly concentrated populations, cities are also vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels, warmer temperatures and fiercer storms. At the same time, better urban planning and policies can reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and improve the resilience of urban infrastructure to climate change, thus shaping future trends.

This book shows how city and metropolitan regional governments working in tandem with national governments can change the way we think about responding to climate change. The chapters analyse: trends in urbanisation, economic growth, energy use and climate change; the economic benefits of climate action; the role of urban policies in reducing energy demand, improving resilience to climate change and complementing global climate policies; frameworks for multilevel governance of climate change including engagement with relevant stakeholders; and the contribution of cities to “green growth”, including the “greening” of fiscal policies, innovation and jobs. The book also explores policy tools and best practices from both OECD and some non-member countries.

Cities and Climate Change reveals the importance of addressing climate change across all levels of government. Local involvement through “climate-conscious” urban planning and management can help achieve national climate goals and minimise tradeoffs between environmental and economic priorities at local levels. The book will be relevant to policy makers, researchers, and others with an interest in learning more about urbanisation and climate change policy.

Osorio argues that Lima was a baroque “border city” that linked the South Sea with the Andes. As the “Head city” of the Viceroyalty of Peru, Lima came to govern and represent a vast and rich domain within Spain’s worldwide empire. This meticulously documented and theoretically informed study is must reading for all those interested in the modern history of cities and empires.

Alejandra B. Osorio is Assistant Professor of History at Wellesley College.

</text>

City planning is an ancient activity but a modern profession. The city planning profession in the United States arose from the urban reform movements of the 1890s and early years of this century. Here, in a volume commissioned to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the American Institute of Planners, the author examines the beginnings of urban planning and traces its gradual emergence as a guiding influence in all levels of government. The book is remarkably comprehensive and includes a wealth of detail gleaned from hundreds of original documents and extensive interviews with pioneers of the profession. Mr Scott describes the political movements, the persons and institutions, the civic crises, the legislative struggles, and the sometimes serious reverses that comprise the principal elements in the planning story; perhaps more importantly, he gives much attention to the intellectual history of planning.

The late Mel Scott was a planner, writer, lecturer and a research associate at the Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California, Berkeley.

                <text>
From the preface :

Many recent urban sociology textbooks have come close to abandoning the traditional concern of urban sociology, which is the community in urban society. Emphasis has shifted to individual adaptations to urban society or to characteristics of urban society. This book returns to an emphasis on the concept of community and integrates contemporary knowledge about local communities with an analysis of the nature and problems of urban society. The focus is sociologically sound, and, at least as important, it allows students to relate their own experiences to the analysis.

The theories and data needed to understand cities, communities, and urban problems are presented so that students with only a minimal background in sociology should be able to use this book. Complex theoretical issues are developed logically and clearly and are related to concrete examples. The materials and issues presented should be especially helpful to students working toward associate and baccalaureate degrees in such fields as urban studies, urban planning, and urban sociology.

Contents :

Part 1 : Theoretical and historical perspectives
1. Approaches to cities and their problems
2. The concept of community
3. The history of cities
4. The development and nature of urban-metropolitan society
5. The internal structure of the city and metropolis
6. Life styles in the city and suburbs
7. The population of cities in the United States

Part 2 : Urban problems
8. Cities lose control : The roots of urban problems
9. The persistence of racial and ethnic communities
10. Urban politics
11. Problems of shared communal functions - housing, transportation, health
12. Problems of the physical environment
13. Functional problems : Crime
14. Educational problems of cities
15. This book examines the transformations in the urban form of the Ottoman capital in the seventy-year period from 1838 to 1908... Like many non-Western cities of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Istanbul was exposed to powerful cultural and physical impositions coming from Europe. Nevertheless, its response to these external influences was unique, being shaped by a complex heritage and a noncolonial status. I hope to clarify the events and ideas that surrounded the foundation of the Westernization process, which, by giving a new orientation to the development of Istanbul's physical form, planted seeds for an evolution that continues to the present day.

Zeynep Çelik is a distinguished Professor in the School of Architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology.

</text>

                <text>

The Work Group deals with “Frontiers and Identities”. The present volume is particularly concerned with exploring approaches to the relationship between cities as places of creation, perception and representation of identities and political and territorial organisms, both within the city and outside of it.

In this volume the Work Group has decided to focus on cities as optimal entrées for understanding how people give meanings to the physical places where they live and work. At the same time, by emphasizing the links between individuals’ subjective experiences and their broader allegiances or belongings (political, ethnic, linguistic, religious, gender and so forth), the authors draw the city as a mirror that reflects the wider spaces and changing organisations that lie outside: hence the “regions” and the “nations” of the title.

Contents :

Preface - Ann Katherine Isaacs, Guðmundur Halfdanarson
Introduction - Luďa Klusáková, Laure Teulières
Reading the City.
