This phenomenon again requires a new approach towards port development and related urban planning. Such changes have inevitably influenced the spatial structure of hub port cities. As existing models on spatial and functional evolution of ports and cities are mainly derived from European and American cases, this paper attempts to introduce evidence from an Asian perspective, focusing on the particular case of global hub port cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore</text>

<text>This paper investigates the nature of port-city relationships in two major port regions of the world, Europe and Asia. Although this issue is well analyzed through either isolated case studies or general models, it proposes a complementary approach based on urban and port indicators available for 121 port cities. In terms of demographic size and container traffic, it shows the decline of port-urban dependence, stemming from changes in global transportation and urban development. However, European and Asian port cities are not identically confronted to the same challenges, notably in terms of their hinterlands. A factor analysis highlights a regional differentiation of port-city relationships according to their insertion in both urban and port systems, with a core-periphery dualism in Europe and a port-city hierarchy in Asia. Thus, the distance to inland markets for European ports and the size of coastal markets for Asian ports are the main factors to explain the nature of port-city relationships in the two areas. It helps to evaluate which European and Asian port cities are comparable beyond their cargo volumes, by putting together micro (local environments) and macro (regional patterns) factors</text>

The French-German project Bahn.Ville 2 has the objective of testing the principles of an urbanism orientated towards rail by implementation on two regional railway lines (St. Etienne – Firminy, Lyon metropolitan region as well as Taunusbahn, Frankfurt/Rhein-Main region). This paper is presenting selected results on - innovations in regional planning instruments in France (Schéma de Cohérence Territorial) and Germany (Regionaler Flächennutzungsplan) and their respective for a better integration of land-use and transport, - specific observations on neighborhood mobility in the station surrounding and propositions for high quality walking environments as well as - the potential of an observation tool designed to support public intervention on land-use and transport around stations. The results constitute three original contributions of the Bahn.Ville 2 project in the sense of the support sustainable mobility by an urbanism orientated towards rail.</text>

<text>This paper is an empirical attempt to evaluate the importance of maritime transport in North Korea. The study refers to port development issues in the socialist developing countries, in terms of constraints and advantages for ports, and proposes some analysis based on Nampo, the main international trading port city in North Korea. Although it faces a number of difficulties such as trade embargo, energy shortages, transport infrastructure dereliction and unstable diplomatic relationships, North Korean trade activity has been maintained. However, the participation of individual ports in these general trends is not well-known due to the scarcity of data. An analysis of cargo vessel movements at North Korean ports during the last two decades is provided, helping to estimate the importance of ports in foreign trade. It appears that the nature and evolution of port activity do not totally match either the Soviet or socialist developing country models, but proceeding to more on the latter. Some comparison with foreign cases of port concentration and port-related industrial development allows for addressing some implications for Nampo. Finally, the importance of free-trade zones and connection to the transport chain is mentioned for the success of the North Korean gateway</text>

<text>In the 1990s in Europe, several initiatives from local governments have been launched under the general term of urban networking, promoting governance renewal and aiming at a better management of hierarchical forces stemming from globalization, resulting in territorial competition and unbalance. However, few studies have evaluated the achievements of such partnerships. This paper argues that the degree of territorial integration of the area within which the strategy takes place is one of the most important factor of its success. A case study of Normandie Métropole (France) and South Coast Metropole Partnership (England) is proposed, using the particular methodology of chorems for spatial analysis. It appears that the hypothesis is well confirmed as the Norman case, suffering from a lack of integration, has been less efficient than the English one for achieving its goals</text>

<text>This chapter aims at highlighting the relationships between air, maritime & logistic activities of port cities in Europe. Although recent studies have considered sea-air intermodality as a locational advantage for ports and coastal urban centres, they are still few and isolated case studies. Nevertheless, this subject appears to be of growing interest for transport, logistic players and urban planners to improve port performance in a competitive context. However, there is neither an estimation nor a comparative analysis on effective air-sea relations within port city nodes. We propose a valuation of such potentials based on available and comparable data at a European scale, such as air and maritime traffics, urban population, and employment in specific transport activities (freight forwarding, logistics, warehousing, port and airport services). This innovative approach focuses on the level of interdependency between airports, ports and cities. It shows that air-sea linkages within European port cities are still not strongly interdependent</text>

<text>This paper proposes common directions of waterfront redevelopment in Korea through a qualitative approach by interpreting the relation between waterfront area and the overall structure of the port city in Europe. It argues that the more a redevelopment project is integrated to the structure of the city, the more it becomes successful in terms of attractiveness for both citizens and businesses. The findings provide many implications for Busan waterfront redevelopment. The direction of waterfront redevelopment is believed to be induced from the internal and external forces that are coincidentally in juncture. Drastic changes in the regional environment have exerted impacts on specific port cities, resulting in specific trajectories in different regions of the world. In order to respond to those changes, new policies are implemented while city and port enhance their mutual cohesion and increase their overall competitiveness. Busan waterfront redevelopment should not copy other cases of waterfront redevelopment. Its waterfront redevelopment shall not neglect dynamics of port competition and its connection with the city's needs and structure.</text>

Empirical evidence of the corresponding patterns and processes is provided for three main styles of urbanization, exemplified in four different parts of the world.</text>
