Cultural and political events are congestion factors, incompatible with the main value of any network: fluidity. However, from the beginning of the 1980's, the Parisian city transport authority (RATP) initiated a process of “humanization” of its spaces. Since then, Culture has been springing up in the Paris métro in many ways, ranging from live performances of famous artists (Placebo, PJ Harvey, Supergrass, etc.) to exhibitions, including the redesigning of certain. Each of these events is an underground manifestation of wider urban cultures, as evidenced by the design of the Louvres-Rivoli station, which reproduces the works exhibited in the eponymic museum – clearly a way of displaying the city's patrimony. The invited artists are not issued from the subway anymore: they became famous in a much wider cultural area, the occidental one. Political activity is still officially excluded, though: demonstrating in the métro spaces has been forbidden since 1948, there are no notice boards devoted to public expression, and even leafletting is prohibited.<br /><br />Nevertheless, since the begining of the 2000's, political events have mushroomed all over the network, in illegal ways. Between 2001 and 2003, hundreds of advertising posters were smeared by anticapitalist and feminist activists. Several anarchist unions also organized “open door” sessions (during which people did not have to pay to enter the métro), thereby advocating free transport. These movements have been followed by spontaneous action, of a political but also of a cultural type, as exemplified by flash mobs or subway parties. Using various examples, we intend to show that each time political and cultural events bloom spontaneously, they specifically refer to the métro. A transformation is happening that managing authorities have not planned: the métro is becoming less and less of an urban network and more and more of a territory in itself. Nous souhaitons montrer, au terme d'une analyse du vécu des voyageurs de quatre pôles d'échanges, que le déplacement du voyageur au sein du réseau de transport urbain ne se laisse qu'imparfaitement comprendre comme la relation d'un homme avec une machine (approche ergonomique), ou comme la déambulation d'un citoyen au sein d'un espace public (approche sociologique). La fréquentation d'un réseau de transport donne lieu à la construction d'une identité territoriale. Le réseau ne s'oppose pas au territoire, le réseau est territoire. La méthodologie principale retenue pour vérifier l'existence de cette construction identitaire ainsi que son rôle dans l'aisance du voyageur est l'enquête qualitative par entretiens semi-directifs. Favoriser l'interaction territoriale apparait comme une piste intéressante pour améliorer l'aisance du voyageur au sein des espaces de mobilité. Cela nous invite à réfléchir à l'aménagement des espaces de mobilité non pas uniquement en termes ergonomiques et esthétiques (c'est-à-dire en termes spatiaux), même s'ils sont incontournables, mais simultanément en termes d'engagement social, sous la forme de la concertation autour d'un lieu, d'actions politiques plus larges ou de construction de sociabilités ; en termes de représentation cartographique, voire topographique des espaces traversés, pourquoi pas sous la forme d'une cartographie participative ; et, plus largement, selon une logique qui opposerait l'aisance à la performance et favoriserait l'ouverture des lieux contre leur fermeture, l'incisif contre le lisse, la dispersion contre l'unité, la variation contre l'uniformité de la cohérence. Cet article propose d'approfondir la manière dont les autorités organisatrices de transport urbain (AOTU) « pensent » les pôles d'échanges lors du contexte particulier que constitue l'élaboration du PDU. On se demande si les pôles d'échanges, au-delà de leur participation à la « phraséologie » des procédures de planification, peuvent constituer un nouvel outil pour l'action publique locale. Pour cela, une déconstruction du discours des projets de déplacements urbains est effectuée pour saisir si les pôles d'échanges incarnent des problématiques d'intégration spatiale et intersectorielle dans des procédures qui sont censées mettre en œuvre ces enjeux. Concernant la question spatiale, l'analyse montre que les pôles d'échanges et l'intermodalité apparaissent rarement dans les PDU comme des vecteurs d'interfaces entre les institutions. Suite aux changements de statuts et de périmètres des AOTU, les projets de pôles d'échanges semblent plutôt au service de l'identification du territoire communautaire. Au niveau intersectoriel, les PDU peinent à identifier des nodosités territoriales (selon l'expression de Claude Raffestin) qui pourraient en être le support de l'interface entre urbanisme et transport. Les PDU indiquent plutôt leur intention de « favoriser l'urbanisation à proximité de lignes de transport collectif » comme si les nœuds d'articulation des réseaux n'avaient pas de rôle particulier à jouer dans la structuration du territoire. Au final, les résultats de cette recherche insistent sur le fait que, dans l'esprit des PDU, les pôles d'échanges semblent surtout associés à la construction d'un modèle de ville « insulaire », en servant tantôt de filtre (via les parcs-relais), tantôt de démultiplicateur de l'accessibilité au centre de l'agglomération et à toutes les échelles. The negative impacts of urban sprawl are well known, in particular the increase of traffic flows and vulnerability of natural resources. Addressing those questions we propose a spatial decision support system based on a multi-scale approach. On the one hand, fractal geometry is used to determine where new urban developments are possible. Here, the central assumption is the fractal nature of urban growth allowing access to various types of amenities: central amenities (retailing, cultural offer...) and peripheral amenities (open landscape). On the other hand, the accessibility to retail centers offering different amenities is evaluated. Synthetic indicators are proposed taking into account the offer of each retail center as well as the distance to residential areas. The formalization is based on fuzzy sets theory. The fractal modeling and the indicators of accessibility are both integrated in a decision support system by means of a set of rules. The outputs of the system are cartographic representations at several scales where the most interesting locations for new urban developments are identified. Deux démarches ont été adoptées pour appréhender la nature de ces perceptions intersensorielles : 1/ les travaux scientifiques ont été consultés, et 2/ une approche située permettant de relever des perceptions intersensorielles sur un site urbain a été élaborée et testée. Cette méthodologie utilise des comptes rendus de perception d'usagers, des observations ainsi que des mesures physiques réalisés sur site. Les principaux résultats sont les suivants : 1/ les ambiances peuvent être observées d'un point de vue intersensoriel ; 2/ cette observation permet d'élaborer des modes perceptifs révélés par l'interaction existant entre les sens, le langage, la motricité et les modalités de l'être ; 3/ ces modes perceptifs correspondent à trois échelles différentes : profils perceptifs (échelle urbaine), attitudes perceptives (échelle du piéton en mouvement), effets intersensoriels (échelle du dispositif architectural) ; 4/ l'interprétation de ces modes perceptifs fait appel à la motricité ; 5/ les mesures physiques confirment souvent les mesures perceptives et nous en concluons que l'observation des perceptions par le biais du langage est pertinente. Cette recherche contribue à la définition de la notion d'espace public urbain à partir de ses composantes sensibles et à l'élaboration d'un schéma d'intelligibilité des ambiances urbaines basé sur des perceptions situées. Comment considèrent-ils comme ayant un caractère patrimonial des éléments de la ville ? Comme un habitant est avant tout un pratiquant de la ville, la pratique qu'il a est donc l'élément essentiel dans la compréhension du rapport au patrimoine. Il faut donc passer par une mise en discours de la pratique de la ville par les habitants pour répondre à la question de recherche. Deux dispositifs méthodologiques de narration ont été élaborés : l'entretien itinérant et l'entretien collectif ayant produit un ensemble de discours. Le premier a comme objectif de faire parler et marcher les enquêtés dans l'espace de la ville afin de se retrouver en situation d'habitants, et de leur permettre de montrer et de décrire les lieux sur lesquels se construisent une relation au patrimoine. Le deuxième a comme objectif de revoir les enquêtés pour préciser et détailler les caractéristiques qui constituent la relation qu'ils ont avec leur patrimoine. Pour l'ensemble des analyses développées sur les corpus, il s'agit d'explorer le processus de construction de sens de la relation des habitants à propos de ce qu'ils considèrent comme leur patrimoine. Les enquêtés sont placés en situation pour parler de leur rapport au patrimoine à partir leur propre discours élaborés en entretiens itinérants. C'est pourquoi on parle d'analyse sémiodiscursive des corpus c'est-à-dire qu'on cherche à comprendre le processus de la signification du rapport au patrimoine d'un point de vue sémiotique en étudiant les discours qui le construisent. Tout au long de la thèse, les analyses ont deux niveaux : une analyse de contenu permettant de repérer d'une part l'ensemble des lieux sur lesquels la relation se construit, d'autre part l'ensemble des qualifications à l'oeuvre dans la signification du rapport. Une analyse sémiotique ensuite qui étudie la manière dont le sens de ces relations au patrimoine se construit. Based on a European business database, this paper analyses the modal portfolio and employment distribution of about 8,000 transport firms, intermodal operators, and freight forwarders among 80 European ports. It reviews a number of concepts and theories, regarding with transport chain integration and urban centrality in the case of ports. While many studies on intermodalism face a lack of quantifiable data, this research proposes an original methodology based on employment. The data is collected for 76 port cities, 9,000 companies and more than one million employees in all transport modes. By bringing together employment figures and basic urban and port indicators, results of the factor analysis show the different functional and spatial trends. There is a recurrent opposition between freight and passenger-oriented specializations among port cities, which are also influenced by the European core-periphery spatial pattern.
