The currently weak interest among professionals in the architectural and urban planning sector for sound as a bearer of information and meaning, point at an existing challenge of finding new ways of communicating this invisible and transient information to others outside the research sphere. One way of approaching this problem is through the transmittance of qualities of urban space in terms of sound. In my ongoing PhD-work Urban Sound Design - Methods for Qualitative Sound Analysis, I have recently focused on the creation of a digital and interactive model, which enables the cross-reading of visual and sonic material. Its content is regulated through a server that plays texts, animations, videos or slide shows for a targeted audience. Based on a fieldwork study on four streets in Paris, a typology of contents was established. It shows seven types of functionalities: information, advertising, promotion, product presentation, illustration, entertainment and animation. This article deals with how each of these functionalities is part of the atmosphere in public places on one hand, and how they create emotional effects, on the other hand. By transferring works of art in actual public places, artists in general, and sound artists in particular, have undermined and reshaped our understanding of what an aesthetic experience is and have redefined it's relation to different ethical and political forms of being together. From Max Neuhaus to Atau Tanaka, soundwalks have made it possible for those who walk and listen to infiltrate the complexity of our urban environments. This research is an investigation into how these singular aesthetic events affect our experience of public spaces in such a way as to generate a shift from objective public space to a space that becomes public through interaction. These are not merely encounters with the built form, but are environments that are metabolized and personalized by the individual into an "ethos" or "ambiance" of perception: a colourful composition of time, space and the character of place. In many instances these ambiances of perception are not altogether pleasant, leading to negative or unhealthy experiences. This paper aims to explore the modern ambiances that we interact with on a daily basis to promote the cultivation of healthier experiential cities. Particular attention will be given to how we personalize our harsh and unhealthy environments and by what methods we use to cope with them. Cet article traite du rôle sensible de l'eau comme élément d'ambiance dans les jardins et les parcs publics. La mise en scène de l'eau a été transformée depuis le changement des jardins historiques par leur ouverture au public. La mise en accès de dispositifs urbains en envisageant certains comportements sociaux nécessite de concevoir l'eau non seulement comme un composant spatial, mais aussi comme un " formant " d'une ambiance qui tendrait à lier les usages et les sens. De plus, vu l'importance de l'eau dans tous les enjeux actuels, la maîtriser dans les jardins implique de relever les défis environnementaux qui s'imposent à l'échelle planétaire. On fait l'hypothèse qu'au fil du temps, la configuration de l'eau et le style de l'art du jardin, selon les enjeux des époques, ont un rapport réciproque. Étudier plusieurs types de jardins et de parcs nous permet de porter un regard sur les différents paysages et de traiter du rôle qu'ils donnent à l'eau, en révélant les dispositifs et les façons variées de l'animer dans les différentes conditions historiques, géographiques et culturelles, en mettant l'accent sur la question de la rareté et de l'abondance. Cet article est basé sur la synthèse de la recherche documentaire et bibliographique à propos de la forme matérielle, des effets produits et de l'usage de l'eau à travers les dispositifs repérés. L'objectif est de montrer la dimension qualitative - visuelle, sonore, thermique et intersensorielle - de l'eau dans certains exemples étudiés, depuis les jardins historiques jusqu'aux parcs contemporains.
