The ideal-type figures of the evolution of affective relationships with places allow us to bringing to light tendencies of affective appropriation. These tendencies highlight that individual temporalities are predominant in the establishment and evolution of the relation. However, places are not neutral as we underline the affordances of places. Six types of affordances were exposed in their abilities to convey a sensitive experience which can embody one certain ambiance. The ethnography is based on the study of ritual sound worlds (and public callings for praying), sonic tactics of merchants, techniques of distortion, sonic communication, and other manners to attribute to these sites a cultural identity as well as for users to share a community. Ambient sounds occupy several dimensions of daily life as well as political relationships. This paper is an introductory approach to the study of ambient sounds in their socio-cultural context of production and reception. The study of metropolitan inner suburbs seems to show that social representations contribute significantly to its latest attractiveness. The diversity of inner suburbs urban atmosphere appears to offer possibilities to make dense housing, to apply principles of sustainable planning, and to shape a new urban and residential compromise for people. Social representation of urban density, in its values and ambiances, seems to lead both urban project and its acceptability, which would allow a new understanding of urban mutations. We call these expectations "expected space". Our main key to access it is the collection of perceptions and evaluations of the lived space during commented walks. The hypothesis we work on is that people judge the space they live in by comparing what they perceive with what they expect. By asking people about their perception and judgment of their everyday environment, we are able to understand the reference and representations they use to judge, in other words the "expected space". We represent two sites in Montreal. The first is the old Craig pumping station. This project proposes a series of paintings integrate photo, drawing and oil pastels. These explorations hope to articulate, in concrete form, evocative figures of the true nature of the chosen sites. For the second site we explore the area of Mill street, integrating diverse sensorial experiences through an installation. The project brings out different aspects of the site, its specific ambiances. The work confronts us with a typical industrial site within a new reality; situated between space, historicity and sonority. The objective here is to unveil the sense of place and its potential through a multisensory approach. In the cities are developed new forms of atmosphere sharings. Migrant populations seem to play an important role in that process and suggest other modalities of sensorial perceiving of the urban space. The ethnic neighbourhoods became indeed the key for an "atmospherized diversity" which transforms the urban landscape. In this PHD research on Tamil population in Île-de-France, I question the role of sensorial cultures of the individuals within their lifes in the city, as well as the intimate dimension of immigration, atmospheres allowing to deal with the comings and goings between what is possible or desirable to share and what is not.
