From an anthropological point of view, what we call an atmosphere is to be understood in the sense of the experienced dimension of the urban space. That means not something just "given" but, on the contrary, "made" through the people's practices and uses, which, in turn, are not necessarily always spontaneous, but also induced, domesticated, forbidden, etc ; in sum, they are a cultural construction that must be analysed sectioning all the social forces that compose it. The Raval's case in Barcelona, a slum reconverted in a symbol of the ethnic mix and the cultural fizz, is emblematic of how an atmosphere can be planned and constructed. Cependant, les villes fluviales chinoise ont les particularités dans la trace de l'évolution : il n'existait pas au début d'orientation vers le commerce à l'époque dite "du commerce", ni de révolution industrielle à l'époque de l'industrie ; il ne s'agit que d'un emprunt formel au modèle occidental de développement des fonctions tertiaires à l'époque dite "de la tertiarisation".Notre recherche est élaborée autour deux hypothèses principales : premièrement, le rapport ville/fleuve chinois sont passées par les trois états qui caractérisent l'évolution historique des villes occidentales, mais la dynamique de leur urbanisation est née et s'est adaptée au cadre particulier chinois ; deuxièmement, avec l'introduction des modèles étrangers, les villes fluviales chinoises opèrent une interprétation originale pour l'adapter à leurs propres contextes économiques et sociaux. L'emprunt des méthodes externes est mis au service des logiques internes. Nous voulons analyser en plus les enjeux des acteurs dans ces trois moments en Chine. Il existe deux caractéristiques communes dites le pragmatisme et le dirigisme : d'une part la dictature du pragmatisme, (le fleuve est toujours considéré comme un " outil pratique ") ; d'autre part l'effet déterminant des acteurs, dont les plus importants sont l'Etat et la direction des communes, qui ont déterminé en très grande partie le sillon de l'évolution des fonctions et des formes du fleuve. Notre thèse a trois parties principales en répondant aux trois phases de l'évolution du rapport ville/fleuve : l'époque de concession, entre 1840 et 1949, l'époque de reconstruction de la Chine, entre 1949 et 1978, et l'époque de l'"Ouverture", de 1978 à aujourd'hui. Quatre villes sont choisies comme terrain de recherche après une étude initiale: Shanghaï, Canton, Wuhan et Tianjin. A la lumière de ces études, la diversité des enjeux liés à la thématique de l'usage du fleuve au cours de l'urbanisation est mise en évidence. The research question is : "How to redesign one sonic atmosphere into a variation of sub-atmospheres in large indoor spaces ?" This question is especially valid for spaces such as semi-public commercial spaces (e.g. shopping malls), libraries, airports and communication spaces. The sonic atmosphere in these collective spaces is often loud, blurred and confusing, with little correspondence between visual and aural perception, and with weak articulations of spatial dimension, distance, borders and orientation. Together the different sound sources within these spaces generate a sonic hubbub. Even though such spaces comprise of several types of activities, the sonic atmosphere is the same all over the place. Hence, this research project focuses on design of sonic variations of the atmosphere; i.e., site specific sounds that deal with qualities such as communication, comfort, orientation, identity and privacy. The objective is to develop and test an interdisciplinary design methodology, which comprises a number of co-related methods ; e.g. acoustic measurements, architectural site analysis, as well as virtual modeling and representation (visual and acoustic) of the space. The main part of the project is the virtual modeling and representation. It connects software that handles architectural 3D-modelling (SketchUp) with the Catt-Acoustic software, used for prediction and auralization. The research project also includes a case-study, which comprises proposals for redesign of a congress centre (Scandic Infra City), situated north of Stockholm. The proposals - consisting of architectural elements, sound installations (additions of sounds) as well as acoustical measures - will be demonstrated in a virtual model. The presumed effect is a differentiation in terms of a variety of sonic sub-atmospheres within the congress centre. The methodology developed in the project is intended to function as a tool for design measures of large indoor spaces. It is an interdisciplinary tool in that it supports acousticians as well as architects. The case-study may serve as a pilot model for future applications of redesign of the sonic atmosphere in large indoor spaces. This paper is a result of a research project, executed by the acoustic consultancy company ÅF-Ingemansson and the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack), Stockholm. Atmosphere is defined as the affective evaluation of the environment. An atmosphere can change people's affective state. However, since a person's affective state is also influenced by many non-environmental factors, methods to measure mood and emotions are less useful to determine the effect of the environment on people's experience. A questionnaire was developed consisting of 38 atmosphere terms that have to be rated on a 7-point scale. Experiments demonstrate that atmosphere can be described by four underlying dimensions, called Coziness, Liveliness, Tenseness and Detachment. The method is shown to be robust, sensitive and sensible.
