People of traditional mobility, and main ethnic group of Ivory Coast, the Baoule play an increasing part in the urbanization of their country. Whereas rural emigration has been standing, departure to towns, mainly among men, have become repeated. Circumstancial and structural causes mingle to account for this trend and its limits.

Despite the explicit aim of clarifying the notion of exclusion, this «current state of knowledge» ends up by increasing theoretical uncertainty. It also raises a problem from the: standpoint of sociological method: what should be done about common sense words? Should their meaning be explained, and if so. should, they be defined scientifically? The author looks to the many contributions to this encyclopedic volume to find a way out of the deadlocked editorial project whose causes and effects he partially analyses.</text>

.</text>

<text>Stéphane Beaud, Michel Pialoux: Notes on the Relations between French and Immigrants at Work and the Neighbourhood. Can one infer the existence of worker "racism" from the rise of the working-class vote in favour of the National Front? This article is based on a long survey in : the field carried out among workers- in a long-standing industrial region of France. It seeks to analyse the various types of relationships between French and immigrant workers in the factory and in the neighbourhood. Based on interviews and observations, the authors try to show that racist attitudes within working-class populations - it is - their specific -feature - are profoundly rooted, in the material living conditions, both at the factory (exacerbated competitive struggles within workshops employing unskilled workers in a content of « mass vulnerability») and in council ; housing neighbourhoods. Their analysis leads to the conclusion . that the question of worker racism cannot be dealt with as an autonomous phenomenon. On the contrary, it must be constantly viewed within- the larger framework of the current transformations of the worker, group, particularly the jammed : system of professional promotion and growing disappointment with the school system.</text>

<text>Some Prospects for Tunisian Cities in 2009.

Interregional disparities in Tunisia have worsened because of the present demographic growth. The future of the Tunisian urban system, regional sub-systems, is already influenced by the growth or the regression potentialities specific to each urban unit. In order to elaborate urban demographic perspectives, it is necessary to take into account the regional aspects in the dynamics of population. After analysing methodological problems and evolution factors, a panorama of the urban space in the year 2009 is presented. The reinforcement of the Tunis and coastal regions would not strongly affect the spatial distribution of the Tunisian population. In the inner part of the country, a stronger natural movement could counterbalance, it would seem, the negative effects of the emigration to more attractive regions. But, as regards structure by age, the contrasts would be reinforced.</text>

Traditional solidarity networks (pertaining to family, or village community) are very important amongst Portuguese migrants in France. A more specific feature of this group is the exceptionally dense network of institutionalized associations (an inventory led in 1982 to the official figure of 769 associations). The authors report the historical process which led to this pattern of organizations of the Portuguese community. The study of the Portuguese immigration in France presents an efficient pattern for the knowledge of international migrations: about 800 000 people were involved in this movement, acting only some years, out of the States' control.

Ageing of Belgium's population will be on increase in the early XXIth century, as in all countries of Western Europa, especially by the growth of people aged 75 and more years. But, on account of internal migrations, ageing appears very diversfied in Walloonia. In some regions persists a phenomenon of superageing, caused by the secular young working depopulation as well as the recent rush of young pensioners. These epiphenomena of ageing have to be integrated in the local management.</text>

The process of urbanization - suburbanization has been followed in the Brussels area during the seventies by a very intensive counter-urbanization. The migration flow is positive in the rural districts for the 25-40 years old households with their children under 10 years. Around 20 years, on the contrary, migration to town is more important, as it is for unmarried people. Since 1979 a slackening of the urban to rural shift is observed, and seems to be linked with the economic crisis.</text>

Migration is obviously the hardiest demographic phenomenon to approach. It's because this event isn't registred as an act at the registry office. Only registers of population allow statistical countings of this phenomenon. In lack of them several sources allow roundabout estimations of internal mobility. But, in Europe, because of the different registration systems, comparisons between statistical data are difficult. All the comparative analysis therefore internal mobility in Europe will have to be done very cautiously.</text>

<text>About the Variability of Demographic Parameters for Small Populations.

Several obstacles such as the lack of data, an excessive variability of the parameters or problems of confidentiality usually stop any attempt to develop a demographic analysis for local populations. This paper mainly concerns the problem of variability in the demographic parameters when dealing with small numbers of events. This is usually the case with local populations even if several years of observations are grouped. The discussion concludes by giving formulas for estimating a confidence interval for different demographic parameters while some examples are proposed on the base of a set of Belgian communes with different population size.</text>

<text>Xavier Michel, The urban landscape as a premise for renewal in French geography, 1960-1980 A renewal of the notion of urban landscape is to observe during the 1960s and 1970s. This notion is detectable and (re)constructed in the writings of French urban geographers. These writings define urban landscape in comparison with the notion of rural landscape and other landscapes. Its contemporary originality depends on new architectures, standardization, rapidity of its creation and its unfinished appearance. Besides the urban materiality, the urban landscape is characterized by an atmosphere linked to the city traffics and their consequences. It is based on a representation articulating spaces of daily life, spaces of tourism, and spaces of “visits”. Geographers identify recurrent elements of urban landscapes, and they think of the differentiation or not between time-spaces. These writings represent urban landscapes through description, highlighting the existing relationships between the whole and the parts, as well as the different types to be distinguished according to urban organizations, such as centre and periphery relationships, partition of urban space, mobility and temporality of cities. </text>

<text>The «Geographic Mobility and Social Integration» Survey: a Challenge to Customary Practice in the French Data Production.

In France, the study of migrations has been hampered by considerable inadequacies in the system of statistical production. This paper analyses the structural factors underlying this weakness, that is inadequate freedom for publicly-funded research, overhelming presence of ideology and lack of interest in truly empirical methods. Such factors have meant that relatively little priority has been given to migration study and have delayed the emergence of methodological reflections. Thus it was natural that the INED (National Institute for Demographic Studies), who had worked in this way, should undertake the first large-scale random survey on immigrants or foreign origin populations in France.</text>

<text>The aim of this work is to question the notion of space that underlies the claimed ‘spatial turn’ in geographical and social theory. Section 1 examines this theoretical literature, drawing heavily on Soja as the self declared taxonomist of the genre, and also seeks parallels with more populist texts on cities and space, to suggest, following Williams, that there is a new ‘structure of feeling’ towards space. Section 1 introduces two foundational concepts. The first, derived from Soja’s misunderstanding of Borges’ story The Aleph, argues for an ‘alephic vision’, an imposition of a de-materialized and revelatory understanding of space. This is related to the second, an ‘ecstatic vision’, which describes the tendency, illustrated through the work of Koolhaas and recent exhibitions on the experience of cities, to treat spatial and material experience in hyperbolic and hallucinatory terms. Section 2 offers a series of theoretical reconstructions which seek to draw out parallels between the work of key theorists of what I term the ‘respatialization’ literature (Harvey, Giddens, Foucault and Lefebvre) and the work of Hillier et al in the Space Syntax school. A series of empirical studies demonstrate that the approach to the material realm offered by Space Syntax is not only theoretically compatible but can also help to explain ‘real world’ phenomena. However, the elision with wider theoretical positions points to the need for a reworking of elements of Space Syntax, and steps towards this goal are offered in section 3. In the final ‘speculative epilogue’ I reopen the philosophical debates about the nature of space, deliberately suppressed from the beginning, and suggest that perhaps the apparent theoretical and empirical versatility of Space Syntax, based upon a configurational approach to space as a complex relational system, may offer an alternative approach to these enduring metaphysical debates.

The increasing percentages of foreigners among the French population (foreigners' rates) is due to a faster increase of the foreign population than that of the French population, as analysed from census to census for the last twenty years. These facts do not account for local differences: the paper examines, for each of the 57 agglomerations of more than 100000 inhabitants in 1982, the evolutions not only of foreigners rates but also of the variations of French and foreign populations. Types of evolution are described focusing on the part played by foreign migrations in urban growth. </text>

<text>The households of foreigners in France: evolution and spatial disparities.

The foreign households living in France between 1975 and 1982 have increased both in proportion and in size. This twofold trend is indicative of the importance of family reassembly while the immigration of workers strongly slowed down. The foreigners, and more particularly those coming from all over Africa, are used to share more frequently their dwellings with members of their families than with other workers and they very seldom live on their own.
As a result, the average size of the foreign households has been growing while that of the French households has been decreasing. More precisely, the average sizes of households are shown to be closely related to the distribution of nationalities. A typology is set up, taking into account the numbers of French and foreign households according to their sizes within the agglomerations of more than 100000 inhabitants, in order to bring out the diversities of combinations within French space.</text>

Immigrant community structures have been mainly associated with the early phase of immigrant settlement. According to this model, such structures disappear in the course of the «acculturation» process. In this article, we argue that these structures exist during a different phase in immigrant settlement and that they are a response to needs that extend beyond the phase of pure «adaptation» to the host society. We attempt to support this argument through the analysis of residential stability of foreign immigrants, used as an indicator of a settling process. </text>
