The New York skyline is arguably one of the most distinctive on Earth. At night, however, the city’s numerous landmarks are transformed from the familiar into the new. Following the success of Merrell’s London at Night, award-winning aerial photographer Jason Hawkes offers a dramatic, night-time perspective on one of the world’s most iconic locations. From the vantage point of a helicopter, Hawkes captures the magical, almost abstract quality of such familiar sights as the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Empire State Building as seen after dark, as well as revealing some of New York’s less well-known vistas. Featuring an informative introduction and extended captions by the New York Times journalist Christopher Gray, New York at Night is a unique and often breathtaking record of the city that truly never sleeps.

Jason Hawkes has produced over 35 aerial photographic books since 1991.

Christopher Gray is a journalist for the New York Times who writes about the architectural history of New York.

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher:

Many of the key debates in urban research over the last thirty years have occurred in and through New York City. A range of key figures in the analysis of capitalist urbanization have published their research on New York City in the pages of this journal including Robert Beauregard, Susan Fainstein, John Friedmann, Loretta Lees, Ann Markusen, Margit Mayer, Peter Marcuse, Harvey Molotch, Neil Smith, Sharon Zukin and many others.

We can differentiate between two main bodies of work in relation to New York City: firstly, the role of the city as an intellectual arena through which key theoretical ideas have been explored and elaborated; and secondly, those works that focus on the city itself for the analysis of specific manifestations of urban transformation. If we consider the ‘thinking space’ of the city it is clear that the role of New York as an inspiration for thought and also a focus for analysis are often interrelated so we cannot easily disentangle the theoretical and empirical dimensions to urban scholarship. Although, we cannot refer to a ‘New York School’ in quite the same way as the LA School of the 1990s — exemplified by the work of Ed Soja, Allen J. Scott and others — or even the Venice School of the 1970s — with the distinctive neo-Marxian architectonic discourse of Massimo Cacciari and Manfredo Tafuri — there is nonetheless a powerful skein of individual and institutional connections that places the city at the centre of a series of critical debates. There has been, through the work of Peter Marcuse, Neil Smith and others, a deep dedication to exploring aspects of social injustice in New York City as a means to build a powerful body of empirically grounded theoretical work. A set of conceptual tools and vantage points have emerged from the city which remain pivotal to socially engaged urban research.

Critical areas of scholarship on New York City addressed in IJURR include migration, labour markets and the incidence of urban poverty; the effects of fiscal crisis on patterns of urban government and public service provision; housing and ghetto formation; gentrification and class displacement; the garment industry and processes of industrial change; the rise of art districts and the power of cultural capital; and more recently, the city as a focal point for critical security discourses and geopolitical agendas.

In selecting ten articles for this IJURR virtual issue (from more than 40 possibilities) I have sought a balance between past and present, placing some ‘classic’ articles alongside a few less known contributions. There comes a certain point where the journal itself becomes part of the discourse in question: essays may link in unexpected ways or novel insights may subsequently become central elements in urban debate. I hope that this initial selection will provoke further reading and reflection and perhaps even the writing of new articles that carry these debates forward.

<text>Through the ekphrastic descriptions occurring in Underworld, Don DeLillo meditates on the place and nature of art in postmodern American society and, at the same time, represents his own art of fiction. In the postmodern metropolis public space has become saturated with the signs and systems of commercial activity. The novel's artist figures have to win back an audience and to impose their own forms of communication. They have to reappropriate available surfaces and superscript them with their own images and colors. In exploring the aesthetics of these fictional artists, and of the graffiti writer Ismael Muñoz in particular, DeLillo produces his own aesthetic manifesto. His novel suggests that the role of the late twentieth century American artist is to respond to the visual and intellectual assault that the media have mounted against the public, first by placing dominant productions at an ironic distance, and then by transforming discredited modes of expression into new cultural forms. The novel embraces and even adopts the urban graffiti impulse while adding other dimensions not available to the visual arts. It brings together the fragmented and disjunctive images of city life into a narrative, adding a temporal as well as spatial dimension. From the detritus of contemporary capitalism Underworld creates new myths that restore humanity to a culture dehumanized by its own technology.</text>

New York's influence has stretched far beyond its city limits and into every corner of finance, art, and popular culture around the world. Now it finally has a biography big enough to match. Created in collaboration with the Museum of the City of New York, this hands-on history concisely and entertainingly traces the city's evolution from pristine wilderness to great metropolis. Organized both thematically and chronologically, the book brings the city's incredible story to life through approximately 20 facsimile documents--diary extracts, immigration papers, maps, newspaper clippings, playbills, letters, and posters highlighting the vibrant life of the city that never sleeps.

Urban environments worldwide are in the midst of multiple shifts, driven by interconnected flows in capital, people, and resources at local, regional and global scales. It impacts not only cities but also the network of social and ecological systems well beyond their borders. In contrast to the complexity of today’s urbanization, the concept of the “Eco-City”, arguably dating back to the ideal of the 19th Century Garden City, seems like an overly simplistic and utopian vision. Yet, the imagery and language of an idealized “Eco-City” continue to shape the planning and design of contemporary cities while disregarding the vital complexity of contemporary urban conditions and issues.

Urban environments worldwide are in the midst of multiple shifts, driven by interconnected flows in capital, people, and resources at local, regional and global scales. It impacts not only cities but also the network of social and ecological systems well beyond their borders. In contrast to the complexity of today's urbanization, the concept of the "Eco-City", arguably dating back to the ideal of the 19th Century Garden City, seems like an overly simplistic and utopian vision. Yet, the imagery and language of an idealized "Eco-City" continue to shape the planning and design of contemporary cities while disregarding the vital complexity of contemporary urban conditions and issues. This symposium will examine today's multifaceted urban environment in order to explore emerging theories and practices that will enable us to address these critical issues. Specifically, it investigates three areas of knowledge and practices: emergent ecologies, emergent cities, and emergent tactics.

Keynote address - Kongjian Yu

Emerging Ecologies

Jane Wolff, Kristina Hill and Ken Yocom (moderator)
While early attempts to conceptualize urban ecological conditions primarily focused on traditional ecological methods and subjects, a new paradigm is emerging that embraces the complexity and uncertainty associated with coupled human/natural systems. This session explores the relationships between environment, equity, economy, and design in our rapidly urbanizing world.

Emerging Cities

Chelina Odbert and Jennifer Toy, Viren Brahmbahatt, Alfredo Brillembourg and Ben Spencer (moderator)
This session examines the dynamics and implications of rapid urban growth in the emerging mega-cities of the global south. Critically engaging issues of environmental resilience and social equity as they relate to urban form at multiples scales, it explores the present and potential evolution of design, technology, policy and practice in these contexts.

Emerging Tactics

John Bela, Nicholas de Monchaux, Denise Hoffman Brandt and Jeff Hou (moderator)
This session focuses on new approaches to remaking the urban environment that are distinct from the paradigm of master planning and conventional practice of design. It examines how seeing the urban landscape as a set of systemic and interactive matrices with interconnected and spontaneous possibilities can inspire new approaches and methods in design and implementation.

<text>This study explores and reiterates the significance carried by the notions of place, multiplicity and experience in the approaches to the study of architecture, in the shaping of cultures, and in the construction of urban (hi)stories and topographies. The research aims to reveal the existence of a transcultural space constituting the cosmos of Nicosia, capital city of the late medieval and renaissance Kingdom of Cyprus. It is argued that the natural and built environment of the city simultaneously witnessed as well as constructed this highly obscure space, whose elusive nature has not been sufficiently or comprehensively researched thus far. The purpose of this study is to unearth numerous attempts at reconciliation by medieval civilizations, and to comprehend their repeated efforts at bringing in parallel existence and understanding adjacent, but seemingly oppositional or even confrontational, cultures and spaces.

The method used engages a re-interpretation of Nicosia's urban space by means of a scholarly narrative, defined as a comprehensively annotated telling of citizens' experiences through the city. While maintaining that it is this telling which better exposes the city's character, past findings on the architecture, topography, and urban experience of Nicosia are concurrently examined, some of them accepted and others re-proposed. Different architectural and ethical realities for the city, as well as varied urban and social identities, emerge as possibilities for pondering only after the superimposition of scientific findings on an interweaving web of experiences, on the remarkably phenomenal world of medieval urban space. </text>
