Christian Topalov: Maurice Halbwachs, the Photographer of Parisian Slums (1908) In February, 1908, Maurice Halbwachs took a series of photographs of the Cité Jeanne-d'Arc, an area of working-class housing denounced by hygienists as one of the worst «slums» in Paris. He gave them to Albert Thomas for publication in Y Humanité, during the municipal election campaign. The photographs signalled the start of an active phase of Halbwachs participation in the «Ecole Normale socialism» network and were contemporary with the preparation of his doctoral thesis in law. Moreover, they belong to a series of walks in Paris and a literary and reformist tradition of urban exploration. From the Ceremonial to the Picturesque (Ivry, 1909-1939) Although only the visitor's standpoint is directly reproduced, the account of visits to worker gardens in Ivry from their creation in 1909 to the eve of World War II in 1939 allows us to grasp what was specific to worker gardens: they were a domestic, yet visible space, analogous to the home and at the same time unreal and enchanted. These accounts also follow the transformation of relations that took place between visitors and the visited, just as the diversity of benefactors (wealthy philanthropists, local politicians, market gardeners) corresponded to that of the beneficiaries (from indigents to respectable factory workers).
