By introducing endogenous agricultural amenities into the classical monocentric model, we provide an intuitive explanation of leapfrog development. We show how urban development patterns highly depend on the intensity of surrounding farms and their ability to produce amenities. We also show that, even in absence of a particular landscape feature or any exogenous source of amenities, fragmented urban sprawl is a natural development pattern for a city surrounded by a spatially varying agricultural environment. Finally, we show how land tax policies could curb urban sprawl under certain conditions on households' preferences and farming. Through the collection of chronicles, it seeks to understand the ways of giving meaning and value to this physical world that is unwrapped in the fabric of everyday urban life.This article presents a case study in Brazil which indicates that: [1] urban atmospheres have the force of collective memory since they are able to spread the movement of the significance of urban life, [2] certain places have a higher "power memory" due to its "traumatic experience" which have the ability to motivate a "work symbolization", [3] the metaphors employed in urban narratives suggest the complex working of a "functional" memory, composed at the same time by memories and forgetfulness. Besides the discussion of the results, this paper is also concerned to demonstrate the methodological approach used in the case study as well as the concepts that support the research that underlies this work. In conclusion, this article suggests that memory is a key element in the symbolic construction of urban atmospheres. Finally, by focusing on the joint construction of narratives, the research on urban memories contributes to the understanding of the cultural atmosphere while a continued building and living, making use of human understanding rather in its materiality but also in its temporality. The beach is a space typically used in leisure activities, but during the rituals, a large part of sand is occupied by the faithful, receiving, however, the legitimacy and respect from other people on site. This article presents an ethnographic description of the ambiance from the first moments of the ceremony, when altars dedicated to Yemanja (goddess of the sea) are installed in tents. The research which bases this article aims to show how the transformation of the ambiance (as a cultural and social history of a society) can generate a re-signification of public space by assigning a religious sense. Le cas sud-africain offre ainsi au géographe un premier sujet de réflexion, par sa singularité. Il pose ainsi plusieurs questions fondamentales pour notre discipline, et notamment celle de la ségrégation. Ce phénomène pose le problème des relations entre espace et société : distance sociale et distance spatiale ont des rapports éminemment complexes et sont corrélés de façon très variable dans la réalité urbaine3 . Incontestablement, la spécificité du cas sud-africain se dilue et s'efface depuis la fin de l'apartheid et les premières élections démocratiques d'avril 1994. Les dynamiques socio-spatiales rejoignent des cadres plus connus de l'évolution urbaine, dans un contexte de mondialisation et de métropolisation. Mais les formes de la ségrégation évoluent, les pratiques de la ville aussi, et posent conjointement la question de l'urbanité et de la citadinité. C'est ce dernier aspect que j'explorerai ici, pour tenter d'analyser en quoi les villes sud-africaines actuelles et leur évolution post-apartheid éclairent le problème de la ségrégation. However, upon democracy in 1994 this institution began to assert its authority in matters of governance and service delivery. The volatility of this institution manifested itself prominently in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal and more particularly in the Metropolitan Area of Durban in the context of the two demarcation processes held in 1995 and 1998. Although the demarcation processes subtly served as catalysts to raise the ire of traditional leaders, more importantly their need to be significant actors in matters of service delivery at a local level attracted much attention from the national government. Despite this, the role of traditional leaders in service delivery is far from being resolved. In the absence of any policy on their role in service delivery, traditional leaders adopt new interlocutory strategies with elected councillors in the Metropolitan Area of Durban in order to exercise their hegemony and avoid the risk of being totally marginalised.
