<text>In urban China, urban resident annual earnings are 1.3 times larger than long term rural migrant earnings as observed in a nationally representative sample in 2002. Using microsimulation, we decompose this difference into four sources, with particular attention to path dependence and statistical distribution of the estimated effects: (1) different allocation to sectors that pay different wages (sectoral effect); (2) hourly wage disparities across the two populations within sectors (wage effect); (3) different working times within sectors (hours effect); (4) different population structures (population effect). Although sector allocation is extremely contrasted, with very few migrants in the public sector and very few urban residents working as self-employed, the sectoral effect is not robust to the path followed for the decomposition. We show that the migrant population has a comparative advantage in the private sector: increasing its participation into the public sector does not necessarily improve its average earnings. The opposite holds for the urban residents. The second main finding is that population effect is significantly more important than wage or hours effects. This implies that the main source of disparity is pre-market (education opportunities) rather than on-market.</text>

<text>This paper assesses whether cities enhance technical efficiency of nearby rural counties, by allowing for heterogeneous urban effects both by regions and by city type. An empirical application is demonstrated using the Chinese county-level agricultural data from 2005 to 2009. Cities are found to produce very significant spread effects on counties in Coastal provinces. Yet, spread effects are less significant in Central regions and not significant at all in the less developed regions of Western China. In addition, urban effects also vary across the urban hierarchy as we found that provincial-level cities have a deteriorating impact on technical efficiency, while lower-level cities enhance technical efficiency in most regions. Implications of these findings in terms of urban and regional planning are discussed.</text>

<text>Valued for its 'planet friendly' character, these systems have become the hallmark for cities that want to become part of the so-called 'green culture'. The Vélib' program is the largest system of its kind in the world, with 1800 stations and 20600 bikes. This paper intends to analyze the Vélib' system by considering an often ignored, but essential dimension on the subject: the invisible work, which about 400 agents realize on a daily basis to maintain the functioning of this sustainable mobility program. This presentation will analyse the plurality of operations through which the Vélib' system is updated 24 hours a day. It does so by drawing on interviews and ethnographic observations made in a repair workshop, as well as observations made through accompanying technicians in the field. Through the description of the knowledge and the know-how mobilized by agents, I will show how these actors, through their daily contact with the city and users, become real "sociologists" of mobility and of the users. The urban ecology appears to the maintenance agents as a real field of exploration and experiment, a space inhabited by uncertainty, which the agents have to repair and maintain by a diversity of instruments and practices</text>

<text>Authorized authors generally consider that the urban form of social housing schemes is rot a decisive, or even influential factor in the exten¬sion of current problems. Here, spatial determi¬nism has the counterpart of a reducing socio-economic determinism. In fact, these parts of the city cannot be overlooked, as if they cons-tituted only a backdrop to the " Misère du monde ". This article, offering a synthesis of ear¬lier work, endeavours to reflect on the articula¬tion between urban form and social life. To encompass this relationship, he undertakes an ethno-architectural interpretation of the space of these priority development zones (Zup), consi¬dering that two cultures of space are brought to¬gether in these social housing districts, that of the building authorities and engineers, front which the form of the housing project is derived, and that of the inhabitants. The latter are literal¬ly confronted with the techno-aesthetic culture of the former, materialized in space, and univer¬sal while special anthropological values reside there somehow or other.</text>

<text>The need to cross disciplinary boundaries appreared in scientific research at least twenty years ago. Since its foundation, at the beginning of the 20th Century, urban planning has been claiming the assets of multidisciplinarity. It is particularly concerned withtransgressing disciplinary boundaries. However, multidisciplinarity may weaken urban planning as a discipline because it is a recent knowledge domain, that has borrowed without vigilance from the knowledge established in both the social and engineering sciences. Urban planning may forget to formulate an inventory and to build its own theoretical and practical assets. This article argues thatit is only when has acquired its own identity discipline that it can implement a fecund transdisciplinarity contribution.</text>

<text>Situated at the limits of familial and societal space, the habitat is a determining place in the cultural adaptation process which an immigrant must go through in his host country. Observation of families from Morocco living in the Bellevue ZUP (area designated for development) in Nantes has shown that domestic and urban habits are dependent on reclaiming objects, people, and places which are links between one's former ethnic community and the prescrit, national community. The idea of a patriarchal household is only relevant to parents, as their children are concerned with mastering their hybrid fate.</text>

<text>This paper provides a method to single out customer-based discrimination in the housing market. We build a matching model with ethnic externalities where landlords differ in the number of housing units they own within the same building. Multiple-dwelling landlords discriminate more often than single-dwelling landlords only if some tenants are prejudiced against the minority group. By testing the null hypothesis whereby minority tenants are equally likely to have a multiple-dwelling landlord, we can test whether there is customer discrimination or not. We run the test on French data and show evidence of customer discrimination in the rental market.</text>
