</div>
Samia Mehrez, a professor of Arab and Islamic Civilizations, describes Cairo as the protagonist of a story seen and told by its residents and authors.<br />
<br />
During the second of the Provost Lecture Series “Mapping Cairo: Modern Literary Representations of the City,” Mehrez discussed a map of Cairo she created using literary constructions found in century-old texts.<br />
<br />
Mehrez introduced the Islamic genre of Khitat literature, a social history of the nations under Muslim rule in the Middle Ages, which she focused on in her recently published book, The Literary Atlas of Cairo, an AUC Press publication.<br />
<br />
She used it to offer a historiographical – also known as a narrative presentation of history – map that evokes a spatial sense of Cairo.</div>

<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Part ode, part academic treatise, this book traces the transformation of Cairo’s historic downtown from its spectacular beginning as a French inspired Belle Époque marvel to a site of contest and, more recently, to its role as a neo-bohemian public sphere. Using the work of several Egyptian novelists, this study explores the significance of this space to ideas of modernity, class consciousness, and the anti-colonial struggle. Drawing on urban studies scholarship, Arabic literary criticism, and cultural theory, this wide-ranging work argues that a re-examination of the historic city center in the face of globalization and the ongoing fragmentation of urban space is essential to understanding what it means to be Egyptian today.</div> </div> <b>Mara Naaman </b>is Assistant Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature at Williams College.</div> </div>

<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
For members of Cairo’s upper classes, cosmopolitanism is a form of social capital, deployed whenever they acquire or consume transnational commodities, or goods that are linked in the popular imagination to other, more “modern” places. In a series of thickly described and carefully contextualized case studies—of Arabic children’s magazines, Pokémon, private schools and popular films, coffee shops and fast-food restaurants—Mark Allen Peterson describes the social practices that create class identities. He traces these processes from childhood into adulthood, examining how taste and style intersect with a changing educational system and economic liberalization. Peterson reveals how uneasy many cosmopolitan Cairenes are with their new global identities, and describes their efforts to root themselves in the local through religious, nationalist, or linguistic practices.</div>

<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
From its earliest days as a royal settlement fronting the pyramids of Giza to its current manifestation as the largest metropolis in Africa, Cairo has forever captured the urban pulse of the Middle East. In Cairo: Histories of a City, Nezar AlSayyad narrates the many Cairos that have existed throughout time, offering a panoramic view of the city’s history unmatched in temporal and geographic scope, through an in-depth examination of its architecture and urban form.<br />
<br />
In twelve vignettes, accompanied by drawings, photographs, and maps, AlSayyad details the shifts in Cairo’s built environment through stories of important figures who marked the cityscape with their personal ambitions and their political ideologies. The city is visually reconstructed and brought to life not only as a physical fabric but also as a social and political order—a city built within, upon, and over, resulting in a present-day richly layered urban environment. Each chapter attempts to capture a defining moment in the life trajectory of a city loved for all of its evocations and contradictions. Throughout, AlSayyad illuminates not only the spaces that make up Cairo but also the figures that shaped them, including its chroniclers, from Herodotus to Mahfouz, who recorded the deeds of great and ordinary Cairenes alike. He pays particular attention to how the imperatives of Egypt's various rulers and regimes—from the pharaohs to Sadat and beyond—have inscribed themselves in the city that residents navigate today.</div>

Trying to make sense of the urban giant that is Cairo.</div>
This book moves beyond superficial generalizations about Cairo as a chaotic metropolis in the developing world into an analysis of the ways the city’s eighteen million inhabitants have, in the face of a largely neglectful government, built and shaped their own city. Using a wealth of recent studies on Greater Cairo and a deep reading of informal urban processes, the city and its recent history are portrayed and mapped: the huge, spontaneous neighborhoods; housing; traffic and transport; city government; and its people and their enterprises. The book argues that understanding a city such as Cairo is not a daunting task as long as pre-conceived notions are discarded and care is taken to apprehend available information and to assess it with a critical eye. In the case of Cairo, this approach leads to a conclusion that the city can be considered a kind of success story, in spite of everything.</div>

An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> An archaeological investigation into the ancient nucleus of medieval and modern Cairo<br /> <br /> This book presents a history of Old Cairo based on new archaeological evidence gathered between 2000 and 2006 during a major project to lower the groundwater level affecting the churches and monuments of this area of Cairo known by the Romans as Babylon. Examination of the material and structural remains revealed a sequence of continuous occupation extending from the sixth century BC to the present day. These include the massive stone walls of the canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea, and the harbor constructed by Trajan at its entrance around 110 AD. The Emperor Diocletian built the fortress of Babylon around the harbor and the canal in 300 AD, and much new information has come to light concerning the construction and internal layout of the fortress, which continues to enclose and define the enclave of Old Cairo. Important evidence for the early medieval transformation of the area into the nucleus of the Arab city of al-Fustat and its later medieval development is also presented.</div> </div> <b>Peter Sheehan </b>directed the Old Cairo Archaeological Monitoring Project from 2000 to 2006 and has published a number of articles on the archaeology of the area.</div> </div>

Readings from literary works that re-construct and re-map the city of Cairo.<br />
<br />
Bringing together writings by Egyptians, Arabs, men and women, Muslims, Copts, and Jews, this rich selection maps out many of the changes in Cairo’s geopolitics and its urban fabric, while tracing spatial and social forms of polarization and new patterns of inclusion and exclusion within the expanding megacity. Through its thematic organization, The Literary Atlas of Cairo traces the developments that have taken place over a century in modes of literary production, and presents a unique historical cross-section of the actors within the Cairene literary field, to provide an unprecedented, original, and indispensable educational and research tool for scholars and students as well as a much wider readership interested in Egypt and Cairo in particular as one of the globe’s largest historic, multi-cultural urban centers.</div>

</div>
In an effort to restyle Cairo into a global capital that would meet the demands of tourists and investors and to achieve President Anwar Sadat's goal to modernize the housing conditions of the urban poor, the Egyptian government relocated residents from what was deemed valuable real estate in downtown Cairo to public housing on the outskirts of the city. Based on more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork among five thousand working-class families in the neighborhood of al-Zawyia al-Hamra, this study explores how these displaced residents have dealt with the stigma of public housing, the loss of their established community networks, and the diversity of the population in the new location. Until now, few anthropologists have delivered detailed case studies on this recent phenomenon. Ghannam fills this gap in scholarship with an illuminating analysis of urban engineering of populations in Cairo. Drawing on theories of practice, the study traces the various tactics and strategies employed by members of the relocated group to appropriate and transform the state's understanding of "modernity" and hegemonic construction of space. Informed by recent theories of globalization, Ghannam also shows how the growing importance of religious identity is but one of many contradictory ways that global trajectories mold the identities of the relocated residents. Remaking the Modern is a revealing ethnography of a working class community's struggle to appropriate modern facilities and confront the alienation and the dislocation brought on by national policies and the quest to globalize Cairo.</div>

An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> "The challenges of an increasingly poor urban population, as well as the mushrooming of illegal or semi-legal settlements and slums, have been acknowledged by both local authorities and international development agencies. The insecurity of tenure, the poor housing conditions, the insufficient supply of basic public services such as water, sewage, streets, electricity, schools, and health centers, as well as the need for political and social inclusion, have been the focus of discussions at international conferences. The response to these challenges has been articulated by an international consensus of comprehensive approaches for improving the living conditions in informal areas, raising the quality of life in poor and deteriorated districts, creating circumstances for long-term poverty alleviation, and guaranteeing legal and secure tenure. A commitment to the Millennium Development Goals by the member countries of the United Nations is assured by their having put these strategies on their national agendas. In Egypt, GTZ supports governmental authorities of various levels in performing their tasks by adopting a variety of conceptual approaches, such as participatory strategies for upgrading informal areas and capacity development. GTZ also strengthens private sector and civil society organizations in recognizing and exercising their responsibility within the urban community and their roles in resolving existing problems. This book features a comprehensive view of sustainable urban development, and of all stakeholders involved in that process. We hope it will be of interest to a wide range of experts concerned with urban development."</div> </div> <b>Regina Kipper</b> studied geography, journalism, and cultural anthropology at the University of Mainz, Germany. With contributions from prominent urban planning scholars and experts in Africa, The Urban Challenge in Africa: Growth and Management of Its Large Cities, edited by Professor Carole Rakodi of the University of Wales, Cardiff, represents the latest in a series of books from the United Nations University Programme on Mega-cities and Urban Development.<br />
<br />
Africa, long thought of as one of the least urbanized continents, will likely have over one half of its population in urban areas by 2020. The Urban Challenge in Africa introduces and highlights many important development issues in Africa. In addition to chapters on individual cities including Cairo, Johannesburg, Kinshasa, and Lagos, the book also explores important sectoral issues such as property markets, urban governance, and urban-rural linkages.</div>
