<br />

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
This book argues that modernity first arrived in late nineteenth-century Shanghai via a new spatial configuration. This city’s colonial capitalist development ruptured the traditional configuration of self-contained households, towns, and natural landscapes in a continuous spread, producing a new set of fragmented as well as fluid spaces. In this process, Chinese sojourners actively appropriated new concepts and technology rather than passively responding to Western influences. Liang maps the spatial and material existence of these transient people and reconstructs a cultural geography that spreads from the interior to the neighbourhood and public spaces.<br />
<br />
In this book the author:<br />
<br />
* discusses the courtesan house as a surrogate home and analyzes its business, gender, and material configurations;<br />
* examines a new type of residential neighbourhood and shows how its innovative spatial arrangements transformed the traditional social order and hierarchy;<br />
* surveys a range of public spaces and highlights the mythic perceptions of industrial marvels, the adaptations of colonial spatial types, the emergence of an urban public, and the spatial fluidity between elites and masses.<br />
<br />
Through reading contemporaneous literary and visual sources, the book charts a hybrid modern development that stands in contrast to the positivist conception of modern progress. As such it will be a provocative read for scholars of Chinese cultural and architectural history.</div>

Métropoles aux Suds. Le défi des périphéries ?
Subject

Description
An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Présentation par l'éditeur :</b></div>
</div>
Ingouvernables ?
<br />
<br />
<br />

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Extract from the Introduction:</b></div>
</div>
This study explores social practices and rituals related to xxiangyi , also called xiangqing and ziyi , Chinese expressions for the sentiment that binds people from the same native place. This sentiment, and the social institutions which expressed it, profoundly shaped the nature and development of modern Chinese urban society. The two quotations which begin this chapter suggest twin aspects of urban social organization and behavior that correspond to native-place sentiment. The account in the 1907 Shanghai gazetteer describes organization by native place as a necessary, natural, specifically Chinese and indeed "morally excellent" response to the dangers posed by urban admixture and anomie. Daotai Intendment Wu XU's description of the city under his jurisdiction indicates a possible drawback to the "moral excellence" of native-place sentiment, suggesting that, when individuals from different native-place groups mixed together on a city street, they felt no common identity as Chinese. The chapters which follow address these themes—the prominence of native-place sentiment and organization in Chinese cities and the influence of such ideas and social formations on city life, social order and urban and national identity.<br />
<br />
The study is based on Shanghai and covers nearly a century, from the opening of the city to foreign trade in 1843 to the establishment of Guomindang dominance in the Nanjing decade (1927-37). Throughout this period immigrant groups from other areas of China dominated Shanghai's rapidly expanding urban population, which more than quadrupled in the nineteenth century. Shanghai's population in 1800 was between one-quarter and one-third million. By 1910 it was 1.3 million. It doubled again by 1927, to 2.6 million. Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, immigrants comprised at least 75 percent of the total figure. Some of these immigrants came to Shanghai to explore economic opportunities; others came in waves to flee war and famine in their native place.<br />
<br />
Combining forces to meet the imperatives of their new urban surroundings, these immigrants formed native-place associations, huiguan and tongxianghui. Such associations and the sentiments which engendered them were formative elements of Shanghai's urban environment throughout the late Qing and early Republican periods. Social, economic and political organization along lines of regional identity shaped the development of the city.</div>

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> In Asian Cities: Risks and Resilience, Stephen Hamnett and Dean Forbes have brought together some of the region’s most distinguished urbanists to explore the planning history and recent development of Pacific Asia’s major cities.<br /> <br /> They show how globalization, and the competition to achieve global city status, has had a profound effect on all these cities. Tokyo is an archetypal world city. Singapore, Hong Kong and Seoul have acquired world city characteristics. Taipei and Kuala Lumpur have been at the centre of expanding economies in which nationalism and global aspirations have been intertwined and expressed in the built environment. Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai have played key, sometimes competing, roles in China’s rapid economic growth. Bangkok’s amenity economy is currently threatened by political instability, while Jakarta and Manila are the core city-regions of less developed countries with sluggish economies and significant unrealized potential.<br /> <br /> But how resilient are these cities to the risks that they face? How can they manage continuing pressures for development and growth while reducing their vulnerability to a range of potential crises? How well prepared are they for climate change? How can they build social capital, so important to a city’s recovery from shocks and disasters? What forms of governance and planning are appropriate for the vast mega-regions that are emerging? And, given the tradition of top-down, centralized, state-directed planning which drove the economic growth of many of these cities in the last century, what prospects are there of them becoming more inclusive and sensitive to the diverse needs of their populations and to the importance of culture, heritage and local places in creating liveable cities?</div> </div> <b>Contents : </b></div> </div> Stephen Hamnett and Dean Forbes - Risks, resilience and planning in Asian cities</div> André Sorensen - Uneven geographies of vulnerability : Tokyo in the twenty-first century</div> Susan Walcott - The dragon's head : Spatial development of Shanghai</div> Gu Chaolin and Ian G. China’s rapid urbanization has restructured the great socialist cities Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou into mega cities that embrace global capitalism. This book focuses on the urban transformations of these three cities: Beijing is the nation’s political and cultural capital; Shanghai is the economic and financial powerhouse; and Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and the regional center of south China. All are historical cities with rich imperial, colonial, and regional heritages, and all have been drastically transformed in the last six decades.
This book examines the cities’ continuous urban legacies since 1949 in relation to state governance, economic reforms, and cultural production. By adopting local historical perspectives, it offers more nuanced accounts of the current urban change than the modernization/globalization paradigm and conceptualizes the change in the context of the cities’ socialist, colonial, and imperial legacies. Specifically, Samuel Y. Liang offers an overview of the urban planning and territorial expansion of the great cities since 1949; explores the production and consumption of urban housing, its spatial forms, media representations, and socio-political implications; and examines the state-led redevelopment of old urban cores and residential neighborhoods, and the urban conservation movement.
Samuel Y. Liang is Associate Professor of Humanities and the Coordinator of Chinese Studies at Utah Valley University, USA.

Description
An account of the resource

<div><b>Extract from the introduction by George F. McLean and Robert Magliola : </b></div> </div> Ten years ago an international seminar of The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy took up this question of "urbanization and values". The study printed under the same title was divided into three parts : I. The history and theory of the development of cities; II. The impact of cities upon values; and III. Humanization : the impact of values upon the urban environment.</div> </div> The present study of urbanization has been carried out most recently by a team of The Institute of Philosophy of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. It continues the investigation of these issues, yet is distinct in a number of significant ways... It focuses on the specific case of Shanghai which as the major Chinese commercial city has long had a uniquely urban and cosmopolitan physical and cultural character.</div> </div> <b>Contents : </b></div> </div> INTRODUCTION - George F. Présentation par le diffuseur :

An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Each year, more than 15 million Chinese leave the rural areas of China and move to the cities. This figure exceeds 300,000 in the case of Shanghai. Before 2015, the majority of China’s population will be living in urban areas. Shanghai New Towns documents and analyses the meteoric rate of urbanization of the countryside round Shanghai, most particularly the part played there by New Towns and New Villages. This decentralized planning model takes its cue from classic examples from Russia and Western Europe. A few pilot new towns have been developed on paper with help from Western designers and then adapted to suit Chinese standards. This book shows how the plans have been put into practice. Photos, essays by Chinese and Western critics and descriptions of projects illustrate what daily life looks like and how these new cities function within the Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan Area as a whole. It dwells at length on the international exchange of knowledge and the differences in method.</div> </div> <b>Harry den Hartog </b>is an urban designer, critic, researcher and writer on urban themes.</div> </div>

Description
An account of the resource
<b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
The theme of this book is the interplay of geography, size, and industrial structure in determining the industrial vigor of cities. At any point in time, a city's economic prospects are determined by location, historical traditions, and momentum derived from past development and the available production base, which is composed of infrastructure, physical facilities, human capital, and administrative capabilities. These givens define an initial menu of possibilities, but no city is bound by them. The set of options can be enlarged, comparative advantage can be reshaped, and development paths can be redirected by suitable action, which takes history as a point of departure, but then uses policy to augment the resource base, exploit locational benefits, solve systemic ills, and improve the functioning of the city as a dynamic organism. This book explores the experience of three Chinese cities -Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangzhou- and abundantly illustrates that turning each of these factors or givens to the city's benefit requires sound policymaking. Unless initiatives are taken to exploit inherited capabilities and to approach comparative advantage in a dynamic framework, a strong production base can start to decay, pulling the city into a vicious, downward spiral. <br />
<br />
This book is divided into 7 chapters. Chapter 2 provides the historical backdrop to economic geography in the three cities extending from early in this century to the eve of reform. It also describes the course of urban and industrial development in China and situates the three cities within the national context. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 explore the salient features of development in Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangzhou, respectively, relating the efforts of each city to enhance its industrial strength through the effective deployment of reforms. Chapter 6 compares the experiences of the three cities and their strategies, relates these to restructuring efforts in other metropolitan areas of the world, and looks at the forces driving urban change in China. Finally, Chapter 7 reviews the main messages emerging from the juxtaposition of theory and experience in the context of the three cities, and examines their future strategic choices regarding reform and the directions of sectoral development.</div>

<strong>Présentation par l'éditeur :</strong><br />
<br />
At the turn of the twenty-first century, the world is faced with an unprecedented challenge. It must address a fundamental shift in the world's population towards the cities, and away from mankind's rural roots. Today, for the first time in history, more than half of the global population resides in urban areas - a number likely to reach a staggering 75 per cent by 2050.<br />
<br />
The Endless City: The Urban Age Project by the London School of Economics and Deutsche Bank's Alfred Herrhausen Society is an unparalleled investigation into the world's urban future. Taking six major world cities as its focal point, the book examines the key social, structural and economic factors that are critical to creating a thriving modern city.<br />
<br />
Authoritatively edited by Ricky Burdett and Deyan Sudjic, with essays by internationally renowned contributors from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, The Endless City presents a pioneering initiative on the future of cities.<br />

<b>Organisers' description :</b><br />
<br />
The principal aim of Urban Age is to shape the thinking and practice of urban leaders and sustainable urban development. This six-year conference series – travelling from New York City, Shanghai, London, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Berlin, Mumbai to São Paulo and Istanbul – serves as an ongoing forum about how the city is studied, planned and managed in the 21st century.<br />
<br />
The Urban Age operates as a mobile laboratory, testing and sampling the social and physical characteristics of global cities through expert presentations and testimonials, research, site visits, GIS mapping and informal information exchange. Findings from each of the cities are analysed according to regional patterns in an effort to uncover global similarities and differences. The results help policymakers, academics and urban practitioners understand the future development of cities and the processes that sustain them.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<div>Full title : Which way China? Will the world's most populous country embrace sustainable development? Is Dongtan City - Shanghai's new eco-city - the model for saving our cities and sustainable urban development?</div>
</div>
<b>Organisers' description : </b></div>
</div>
Dongtan Eco-City has been widely publicised and is regarded as a flagship model for sustainable urban development. But as China continues to urbanise with amazing rapidity, will such projects become mainstream? Can China avoid ever more national and global environmental damage in the all-out rush to grow its cities and its economy?</div>

</div>
