Description
An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Quatrième de couverture :</b></div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

<b>Organisers' description : </b></div>
</div>
The year 2007 marks a shift to an urban era, an era in which more than half of the world’s population lives in cities. This fact is making many headlines. But what are its implications? How will this impact the futures of cities? Over a century ago, the Danish journalist and photographer Jacob A. Riis gave us How the Other Half Lives, shedding light on the plight oftenement dwellers — people who had moved to the city in search of a better life. Today, we again need to address how this urban half lives. <br />
<br />
How are we to plan, build, budget, negotiate, develop, promote, govern, service, use, embrace and secure a myriad of different sustainable urban futures? We now call upon policy-makers, practitioners and researchers from the public, private and academic sectors to share their predictions and proposals for the futures of cities! <br />
<br />
As our urban numbers increase, so do the questions: What are the impacts? On the cityscape, on the countryside, on the built environment,on where we work, where you live, and where Peter plays? <br />
<br />
What are the indicators? Recent findings, current trends! Hard facts, future figures! What is the measure of urban quality, of adequate housing? What are current construction rates? What are theforecasts for 2030?<br />
<br />
What implementations are being made? What is being done to tackle rising urbanization? What policies, plans, and programs are being enacted? Who is doing it, and how are things getting done?</div>

<b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
Small towns have often been considered as unimportant and have been largely ignored by policy-makers and researchers. Instead, attention was focussed on the large city or on rural development and agricultural change without consideration of the positive contribution that small towns can make to rural transformation. But for the rural majority of Africa's population it is the small town with which they have the most intense contacts. Case studies are presented from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.</div>

<div><b>Abstract from the conference and issue coordinators :</b></div>
</div>
The Planned World: Urban, Rural, Wild Conference took place over two beautiful summer days in early August, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. As with The City: Culture, Society, Technology Conference, held in November, 2009, the conference days proved to be invigorating, stimulating, and full of exciting exchange from participants in varied disciplines who were all interested in the same notion of how the world we live in exists as planned space. <br />
<br />
The Planned World Conference was a small and intimate event with about twenty papers presented by speakers from a variety of countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the United States, South Africa, Canada, and Egypt. One thing we learned was that though we live in very different places with different social and cultural worlds, we share many of the same concerns about how the world is a planned place. The conference featured a special lecture by Patrick Y. Foong Chan from Architecture for Humanity Vancouver, as well as a roundtable discussion lead by Architecture for Humanity Vancouver members Linus Lam, Neal LaMontagne, Theresa Fresco, and Patrick Y. Foong Chan. Rounding out our program was a special screening of Yung Chang’s multiple award winning National Film Board of Canada documentary feature film Up the Yangtze.</div>

In Volume 1 of this two-volume publication, the authors review the international literature on urbanisation. They locate urbanisation in broader social transformations, study the role of households in the process of migration and discuss theories of migration. They also provide a survey of the history of urbanisation and planning in Latin America.</div>
</div>
In Volume 2 of this two-volume publication, the authors identify the appropriate planning approaches to urbanisation and their main social implications. Based on an extensive literature study, the issue of planning for urbanisation was investigated and a comprehensive review of the debate on urban land and housing is provided.</div>

Post, ex, sub and dis - these are but a few of the prefixes that have been used to compose neologisms for describing the contemporary cityscape. Terms such as posturban space, postsuburbia, exurbia and disurbia are part of a dizzying collection of often hotly contested labels. This plethora demonstrates how difficult it has become to name, map and analyse the cityscape. Urban environments have come to evince a radically chaotic and fragmented structure. This book explores how fragmentation has acquired new meanings and how the urban landscape is constantly being deconstructed and reconstructed. Richly illustrated with works by artists and photographers, the volume contains a series of essays on spatial, social and cultural issues written by distinguished scholars from an unusual variety of disciplines.</div>

<b>The Ghent Urban Studies Team</b> responsible for the writing and editing of this volume is directed by Kristiaan Versluys and Dirk De Meyer at the University of Ghent, Belgium. <div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
In an effort to restyle Cairo into a global capital that would meet the demands of tourists and investors and to achieve President Anwar Sadat's goal to modernize the housing conditions of the urban poor, the Egyptian government relocated residents from what was deemed valuable real estate in downtown Cairo to public housing on the outskirts of the city. Based on more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork among five thousand working-class families in the neighborhood of al-Zawyia al-Hamra, this study explores how these displaced residents have dealt with the stigma of public housing, the loss of their established community networks, and the diversity of the population in the new location. Until now, few anthropologists have delivered detailed case studies on this recent phenomenon. Ghannam fills this gap in scholarship with an illuminating analysis of urban engineering of populations in Cairo. Drawing on theories of practice, the study traces the various tactics and strategies employed by members of the relocated group to appropriate and transform the state's understanding of "modernity" and hegemonic construction of space. Informed by recent theories of globalization, Ghannam also shows how the growing importance of religious identity is but one of many contradictory ways that global trajectories mold the identities of the relocated residents. Remaking the Modern is a revealing ethnography of a working class community's struggle to appropriate modern facilities and confront the alienation and the dislocation brought on by national policies and the quest to globalize Cairo.</div>

</div>
<br />
<br />

</div>
<br />

Description
An account of the resource
<div>Once the cosmopolitan center of the Middle East, Beirut was devastated by the civil war that ran from 1975 to 1991, which dislocated many residents, disrupted normal municipal functions, and destroyed the vibrant downtown district. The aftermath of the war was an unstable situation Sawalha considers "a postwar state of emergency," even as the state strove to restore normalcy. This ethnography centers on various groups' responses to Beirut's large, privatized urban-renewal project that unfolded during this turbulent moment.<br />
<br />
At the core of the study is the theme of remembering space. The official process of rebuilding the city as a node in the global economy collided with local day-to-day concerns, and all arguments invariably inspired narratives of what happened before and during the war. Sawalha explains how Beirutis invoked their past experiences of specific sites to vie for the power to shape those sites in the future. Rather than focus on a single site, the ethnography crosses multiple urban sites and social groups, to survey varied groups with interests in particular spaces. The book contextualizes these spatial conflicts within the discourses of the city's historical accounts and the much-debated concept of heritage, voiced in academic writing, politics, and journalism. In the afterword, Sawalha links these conflicts to the social and political crises of early twenty-first-century Beirut.</div>
