Dans la série City One le regard de Vincent Fillon tourne autour et plonge dans un quartier de Hong Kong : cinquante-deux tours identiques, répétition des masses, des lignes et des ouvertures, nous sommes dans un environnement paradoxalement abstrait et immatériel. L’horizon a été découpé fragmenté, occulté. La puissance graphique des images nous fait oublier qu’il s’agit d’un univers habité. Notre regard ne peut pas accéder dans l’épaisseur creuse des tours où les vies se côtoient derrière ces juxtapositions identiques, standardisation de la distance collective. Et le sol, apparence d’une vie commune et d’un terrain d’entente, est silencieux comme un ciel à l’envers.
Au fur et à mesure que le regard s’élève, à la quête d’une vue panoramique dévoilant le mystère du lieu, juste avant de franchir la verticalité, le documentaire nous transporte, le moment d’une fiction, dans la dimension de l’air, en flottaison, à mi-chemin, nous ne savons pas où est le commencement, où est la fin. Dans une temporalité figée, les ombres ont été aplaties sur un fond désormais inexistant, le soleil semble avoir déserté les heures et les saisons.
Vincent Fillon est un photographe spécialisé en architecture, les commandes et les travaux personnels l'ont amené à explorer les questions du patrimoine, de l'urbain et leurs mutations. De l'état des lieux, aux enjeux de la reconversion, son travail photographique documente, questionne, interprète.
En parallèle de l'exposition éponyme, la galerie See Studio a souhaité éditer une publication qui regroupe les photos de l'exposition et le travail documentaire accompli par Vincent Fillon pour City One.

Les choix d'implantation et d'intégration dans la cité, en particulier d'équipements publics, participent à l'esthétisation de l'espace public. Les pratiques, neutres ni idéologiquement ni politiquement, traduisent des conceptions de l'urbanisme, du fonctionnement urbain, propres aux collectivités et surtout à leurs décideurs. L'utilité sociale et la technicité propre à l'utilisation de l'équipement public s'effacent au profit de son intégration esthétique dans l'espace.
Une transformation souvent profonde des espaces est ainsi provoquée par ces évolutions simultanées des pratiques, des stratégies et des usages. Les préoccupations esthétiques, le respect d'un pseudo-projet artistique et urbain, intégrés dans le discours politique, aboutissent à multiplier les contraintes architecturales qui réduisent la fonctionnalité des équipements, or c'est cette dernière qui justifie l'investissement public. Tous les types d'équipements publics, toutes les collectivités locales en Europe sont concernés par cette contradiction entre l'apparence et l'utilisation.
Globalement, l'esthétisation des espaces publics, ensemble de pratiques, d'intentions et d'aspirations, s'inscrit entre communication et art, entre l'habiter et le vivre, dans un nouveau rapport au temps.
Thierry Corne est maître de conférences habilité en sciences de gestion à l'Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne et spécialiste du management et de la gouvernance des établissements d'enseignement supérieur. Ancien vice-président délégué chargé de la vie associative puis chargé des relations internationales, il est actuellement membre du Conseil national de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche (CNESER), du bureau de la 6' section (sciences de gestion) de la Commission nationale des Universités (CNU) et vice-président de la CP-CNU.
Gilles Rouet, Chaire Jean Monnet ad personam en études interdisciplinaires sur l'Union européenne, est professeur de sciences de l'éducation à Reims et des relations internationales à Banskd Bystrica (Slovaquie). Capitale économique de la Syrie du Nord et seconde ville du pays, Alep a bâti sa prospérité sur un important commerce local, régional et international et sur le dynamisme de ses activités de production. Jusqu’à la fin de l’époque ottomane, elle était le centre d’un arrière-pays commercial qui se déployait bien au-delà des frontières actuelles de la Syrie, se prolongeant vers la Méditerranée et l’Europe, l’Asie centrale, la Péninsule arabique et jusqu’aux côtes occidentales du subcontinent indien. Si au XXe siècle la ville a connu un rétrécissement de cette aire d’influence et une marginalisation politique et économique, elle a retrouvé depuis une vingtaine d’années une certaine prospérité pour deux raisons majeures : d’abord, une collaboration plus ouverte que par le passé avec le pouvoir central et ensuite, son dynamisme et sa capacité à développer des activités commerciales, industrielles et culturelles aussi bien à l’échelle locale que régionale et cela, dans le contexte d’une libéralisation très contrôlée de l’économie syrienne. Jusqu’en 2011, Alep a ainsi donné l’image d’une ville, sinon florissante, du moins dynamique : c’est un peu ce dynamisme et cette volonté de vivre que décrit cet ouvrage, à travers plus d’un siècle de bouleversements subis ou portés par cette métropole du Nord de la Syrie, condamnée à se recréer et se réinventer sans cesse pour être autre chose qu’un simple satellite de Damas. L’ouvrage réunit les contributions d’une vingtaine de chercheurs appartenant à diverses disciplines – géographie, histoire, anthropologie, sociologie, mais aussi architecture ou encore urbanisme. Il a pour ambition de saisir comment se fabrique et fonctionne la ville d’Alep, comment se forment et se transforment ses espaces et ses territoires ainsi que les réseaux que cette ville projette et alimente à l’extérieur. La période concernée par cette approche pluridisciplinaire s’étend de 1868, année de fondation du premier quartier « moderne » à Alep, fortement inspiré des formes urbaines occidentales, à 2011, année du début de la contestation en Syrie, qui ouvre un nouveau chapitre dans l’histoire déjà longue et mouvementée de la ville.
Thierry Boissière est anthropologue, maître de conférences à l’Université Lumière Lyon 2 et chercheur au GREMMO (Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée, Lyon). Il a également été responsable de l’antenne de l’Ifpo à Alep de 2008 à 2010. Travaillant sur la Syrie depuis 1990, ses recherches ont porté sur l’agriculture urbaine dans la vallée de l’Oronte, sur les stratégies sociales liées à la précarité et enfin sur les espaces et les pratiques du commerce à Alep et à Damas.
Jean-Claude David, géographe, chargé de recherches au CNRS à la retraite, a séjourné dix ans à Alep de 1968 à 1972 et de 1977 à 1983. Il y a effectué ensuite, quasi annuellement, des missions outre celles à Damas, à Beyrouth et au Caire. Il s’intéresse en particulier aux espaces publics, à l’architecture domestique et au patrimoine institutionnel ou « populaire » qui ont donné lieu à de nombreuses publications sur ces questions.

Un temple romain dressé au bord d'un précipice, l'ensemble du Registan à Samarcande, un domaine aristocratique dans les environs de Moscou, des statues soviétiques retrouvées dans la glacière d'un ancien château du Val d'Oise, le palais des cérémonies à Tbilissi... autant d'édifices et de monuments sans relation apparente de période ou de style - la liste n'est pas exhaustive - qui se conjuguent pour évoquer la question du patrimoine dans l'espace post-soviétique. Entre identités nationales et héritages de la « civilisation soviétique », l'épistémologie du patrimoine dans les États post-soviétiques est un thème rarement abordé. Le présent volume issu de contributions rassemblées au cours de deux journées d'études organisées en 2011 par l'Observatoire des États post-soviétiques de l'INALCO (équipe CREE) pose des jalons en identifiant quelques objets de patrimoine et les conceptions qui présidèrent successivement ou alternativement à leur destruction, à leur restauration, à leur valorisation et à leur reconstruction.
Qu'on l'aborde sous l'angle de l'histoire, de l'archéologie, de l'anthropologie, des techniques de restauration, de la photographie ou de l'architecture, la mise en patrimoine se pose-t-elle en termes spécifiques dans le vaste territoire qui de la Russie à l'Asie centrale, du Caucase aux pays Baltes, constituait autrefois « l'Empire soviétique » ? Quelles étaient les techniques de restauration et de conservation du patrimoine archéologique en Russie, au Caucase ou en Asie centrale ? Quelles en étaient les finalités politiques, économiques et esthétiques ? Dans quelle mesure ces pratiques demeurent-elles toujours d'actualité ? Ce livre, qui traite des enjeux contemporains du patrimoine archéologique, s'intéresse également au statut patrimonial des monuments et de l'architecture soviétiques.
Vingt ans après la chute de l'URSS (1991) peut-on approcher la période soviétique par le biais de l'archéologie ? De la conception soviétique du patrimoine à la formation d'un patrimoine soviétique, cet ouvrage ouvre ainsi la voie à une lecture des références de l'architecture post-soviétique.
Taline Ter Minassian est professeur à l'Institut National des Langues et des Civilisations Orientales (Paris) et co-directrice de l'Observatoire des États post-soviétiques (équipe CREE).

Un vieil homme dans les rues de Casablanca. Parcourant la ville comme sa propre vie, il nous mène du centre à la périphérie de l’immense agglomération. Il y a d’abord le port, où l’armée française débarque en 1907. Puis les grands immeubles des années ’20, les “bidonvilles” et les gigantesques quartiers d’habitat social des années ‘50. Enfin, Casablanca aujourd’hui. Autour de la nouvelle Mosquée Hassan II, une grande avenue se construit. Des populations sont relogées à la périphérie. Les grands chantiers actuels perpétuent toujours la même question : celle d’une modernité urbaine qui ne cesse de s’inventer.

China’s rapid urbanization has restructured the great socialist cities Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou into mega cities that embrace global capitalism. This book focuses on the urban transformations of these three cities: Beijing is the nation’s political and cultural capital; Shanghai is the economic and financial powerhouse; and Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and the regional center of south China. All are historical cities with rich imperial, colonial, and regional heritages, and all have been drastically transformed in the last six decades.
This book examines the cities’ continuous urban legacies since 1949 in relation to state governance, economic reforms, and cultural production. By adopting local historical perspectives, it offers more nuanced accounts of the current urban change than the modernization/globalization paradigm and conceptualizes the change in the context of the cities’ socialist, colonial, and imperial legacies. Specifically, Samuel Y. Liang offers an overview of the urban planning and territorial expansion of the great cities since 1949; explores the production and consumption of urban housing, its spatial forms, media representations, and socio-political implications; and examines the state-led redevelopment of old urban cores and residential neighborhoods, and the urban conservation movement.
Samuel Y. Liang is Associate Professor of Humanities and the Coordinator of Chinese Studies at Utah Valley University, USA.

Le patrimoine urbain, tel que nous le concevons à présent, est une notion qui fut articulée et définie en Europe au cours du XIXe siècle. Tout au long de son histoire, ce concept s'est élargit progressivement jusqu'à aborder la varieté de situations qu'il comprend aujourd'hui. De nos jours, non seulement un ancien château peut faire partie du patrimoine : un logement particulier, une usine, une rue ou tout un quartier peuvent être aussi considérés au même titre comme une partie de notre héritage, et donc être protégés et conservés.
Pourtant, les villes sont essentiellement définies comme des lieux en permanente crise, où la dynamique est donnée par le changement continu. En effet, les villes existent parce qu'elles évoluent, se transforment. dans ce cadre, comment s'intègre alors le patrimoine urbain aux dynamiques urbaines contemporaines? L'hypothèse centrale de l’ouvrage est que, loin d’une « déprofessionnalisation » ou d’une « mutation d’identité », les architectes font montre d’une grande faculté d’adaptation liée au capital symbolique attaché à leur titre. Cette mobilisation du groupe professionnel pour maintenir et faire valoir sa place est décrite sous le terme de « travail professionnel » entendu comme un regard sur les pratiques renvoyant à deux dimensions : à la fois travail de production du bâti architectural et travail de production d’une identité professionnelle, celle d’architecte.
Olivier Chadoin, sociologue, est enseignant à l’ENSA de Bordeaux et chercheur au Let-Lavue CNRS 7218. Il a notamment publié "La ville des individus" (L’Harmattan, 2004), "Activités d’architectes en Europe : nouvelles pratiques" (avec T. Evette, éd. de La Villette, 2004) et "Du politique à l’œuvre, systèmes et acteurs des grands projets architecturaux et urbains" (avec P. Godier et G. Tapie, Ed. de l’Aube, 2000).

In the twentieth century, new forms of narrative have represented cultural modernity, political idealism and architectural innovation. Writing the Modern City explores the diverse and fascinating relationships between literature, architecture and modernity and considers how they have shaped the world today.<br /> <br /> This collection of thirteen original essays examines the ways in which literature and architecture have shaped a range of recognisably ‘modern’ identities. It focuses on the cultural connections between prose narratives – the novel, short stories, autobiography, crime and science fiction – and a range of urban environments, from the city apartment and river to the colonial house and the utopian city. It explores how the themes of memory, nation and identity have been represented in both literary and architectural works in the aftermath of early twentieth-century conflict; how the cultural movements of modernism and postmodernism have affected notions of canonicity and genre in the creation of books and buildings; and how and why literary and architectural narratives are influenced by each other’s formal properties and styles.<br /> <br /> The book breaks new ground in its exclusive focus on modern narrative and urban space.
