An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div> </div> For over fifty years numerous public intellectuals and social theorists have insisted that community is dead. Some would have us believe that we act solely as individuals choosing our own fates regardless of our surroundings, while other theories place us at the mercy of global forces beyond our control. These two perspectives dominate contemporary views of society, but by rejecting the importance of place they are both deeply flawed. Based on one of the most ambitious studies in the history of social science, Great American City argues that communities still matter because life is decisively shaped by where you live.<br /> <br /> To demonstrate the powerfully enduring impact of place, Robert J. Sampson presents here the fruits of over a decade’s research in Chicago combined with his own unique personal observations about life in the city, from Cabrini Green to Trump Tower and Millennium Park to the Robert Taylor Homes. He discovers that neighborhoods influence a remarkably wide variety of social phenomena, including crime, health, civic engagement, home foreclosures, teen births, altruism, leadership networks, and immigration. Even national crises cannot halt the impact of place, Sampson finds, as he analyzes the consequences of the Great Recession and its aftermath, bringing his magisterial study up to the fall of 2010.<br /> <br /> Following in the influential tradition of the Chicago School of urban studies but updated for the twenty-first century, Great American City is at once a landmark research project, a commanding argument for a new theory of social life, and the story of an iconic city.</div> </div> <b>Robert J. An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div>
</div>
This book provides concrete examples of the ways in which shifting academic debates, policy and political approaches have impacted on a specific place over the past 30 years. It offers a critical analysis of the history, politics and social geography of the high profile London Borough of Haringey, in the decades prior to the 2011 Tottenham riots.<br />
<br />
The Haringey case study acts as a lens through which to explore the evolution of theoretical and policy debates about the relationship between local institutions and the communities they serve. Focusing on the policy areas of planning and regeneration, it considers the local implementation and outcome of central government strategies that have sought to achieve such accountability and responsiveness through community participation strategies. It examines how the local authority responded to central government aspirations for greater community involvement in planning, in the 1970s, and regeneration, from the late 1980s onwards, before looking in detail at the implementation of New Labour neighbourhood renewal and local governance policy in the borough. In doing so, the book provides a longitudinal case study on how various central government community empowerment agendas have played out at a local level. It offers important lessons and indicates how they might work more effectively in future.</div>

<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> <br /> Youngtown, Arizona, opened in 1954 and was the first development community to have a minimum age requirement (then 65) and to ban underage children as permanent residents. Developer Del Webb unveiled Sun City six years later. Adjacent to Youngtown, it offered modest homes abutting a golf course. In the ensuing decades, active adult communities have proliferated, including Harold Schwartz’s "The Villages" in central Florida, today the nation’s single largest retirement community.<br /> <br /> For nearly sixty years, the success of these and similar communities have changed the image of retirees from frail, impoverished old people to energetic, well-off adults enjoying a resort-like lifestyle. While some experts predicted these communities would fail or undermine the obligations between generations, they are now firmly embedded as one possible extension of the American dream.<br /> <br /> Judith Ann Trolander has written the first book-length history of the "active adult" lifestyle. Examining the origins, development, failures, and challenges facing these communities as the baby boomer population continues to age, she offers a truly original defense of a sometimes controversial aspect of American life.<br /> <br /> <b>Judith Ann Trolander</b> is professor of history at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.</div> </div>

<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Sutton, Kemp, and their contributors demonstrate the importance of place as a site of oppression and transformation, offering placemaking strategies that agents of change in a variety of disciplines can use in working with youth and adults. Their essays lay out both a theoretical terrain and an array of case studies that put theory into practice. This exciting new work documents the persistent intersection of race, place, and power; illustrates placemaking strategies that enable grassroots resistance; and explores the novel professional roles that new technologies make possible. <div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
The Power of Ethnic Places discusses the growing visibility of ethnic heritage places in U.S. society. The book examines a spectrum of case studies of Chinese, Latino and African American communities in the U.S., disagreeing with any perceptions that the rise of ethnic enclaves and heritage places are harbingers of separatism or balkanization. Instead, the text argues that by better understanding the power and dynamics of ethnic enclaves and heritage places in our society, we as a society will be better prepared to harness the economic and cultural changes related to globalization rather than be hurt or divided by these same forces of economic and cultural restructuring.</div>

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Constructing Community examines community from the particular perspective of the shaping and control of urban space in contemporary liberal democracies. Following a consideration and critique of influential theories of community that have arisen within European philosophy over the last three decades, Brian Elliott investigates parallel approaches to community within urban theory and practice over the same period. Underlying the comparison of political theory and urban practice is a basic assumption that community and place are intimately connected such that the one cannot be adequately understood without the other. The underlying intention of this book is to advocate a particular understanding of community, one that centers on collective, grassroots oppositional action. While it draws on certain current theories and practices, the model of community put forward is far from the orthodox position. This study is a provocative and original analysis of the question of urban politics in contemporary liberal democracies. It offers a strong case for reconsidering current debates on democratic politics in light of the connection between political power and the control of public space and the built environment.</div> </div> <b>Brian Elliott</b> teaches in the philosophy department at Oregon State University and is author of Walter Benjamin for Architects.</div> </div>

An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
</div>
For decades, neighbourhoods been pivotal sites of social, economic and political exclusion processes, and civil society initiatives, attempting bottom-up strategies of re-development and regeneration. In many cases these efforts resulted in the creation of socially innovative organizations, seeking to satisfy the basic human needs of deprived population groups, to increase their political capabilities and to improve social interaction both internally and between the local communities, the wider urban society and political world.<br />
<br />
SINGOCOM - Social INnovation GOvernance and COMmunity building – is the acronym of the EU-funded project on which this book is based. Sixteen case studies of socially-innovative initiatives at the neighbourhood level were carried out in nine European cities, of which ten are analysed in depth and presented here. The book compares these efforts and their results, and shows how grass-roots initiatives, alternative local movements and self-organizing urban collectives are reshaping the urban scene in dynamic, creative, innovative and empowering ways. It argues that such grass-roots initiatives are vital for generating a socially cohesive urban condition that exists alongside the official state-organized forms of urban governance.<br />
<br />
The book is thus a major contribution to socio-political literature, as it seeks to overcome the duality between community-development studies and strategies, and the solidarity-based making of a diverse society based upon the recognising and maintaining of citizenship rights. It will be of particular interest to both students and researchers in the fields of urban studies, social geography and political science.</div>

Description
An account of the resource
Extract from the Preface :
An understanding of modern man's increasingly typical habitat - the city and the urban region - is a practical necessity for almost everyone... In this work, I have tried to present an organized review and interpretation of the sociologist's work on the nature of contemporary urban regions as clusters of areas that seem to form a new kind of community. Specifically, considerable attention has been given to : (1) the unique features of urban communities; (2) the historical background of modern urbanism; (3) the continuous changes and adjustments in values and organization that accompany urban development; and (4) the rise of urban planning as an attempt to preserve the essence of urban life under conditions of rapid social and cultural change. Where possible, examples have been drawn from urban regions in various parts of the world; however, the primary focus is on the United States and modern European settings.
Contents :
Part I - Orientation to human communities :
1. The sociological approach to the community and region
2. The city as an emergent type of community
3. The problem of classifying urban regions

An account of the resource
Extract from the Preface :
This book aims to fulfil but one purpose, namely, to meet the needs of students engaged in the study of the sociology of urban communities... The four queries with which this book concerns itself are: (a) What are the structural characteristics of the modern urban community? How does it appear as a social form? (b) What functions are performed by its inhabitants? In what sense are these activities sociologically significant? (c) In terms of social end-products, what sorts of personalities and groups characterize urban life? In what sense are these social ends departures from the rural cultural pattern? (d) What forms of social control are evoked by the impact of the urban environment?

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Extract from the Preface:</b></div> </div> Several purposes informed the collaborative work behind this volume. First, it provides a sustained examination, from a variety of viewpoints, of one urban place. Banaras was chosen primarily because it had attracted a sufficient "critical mass" of new scholarship to be especially suggestive... But even though the contributors sketch the outlines of north Indian urban history over the preceeding two centuries, they do not claim that their essays provide a definitive picture.</div> </div> Rather, the essays explore new vistas, either methodologically or topically. Our second purpose, then, was to suggest by these juxtaposed examinations new ways to approach the history of South Asia. The topical implications of such new approaches are discussed in greater detail below; here it will suffice to note that the authors have shared as a focal point the participation of nonelite groups in the developments, events, and political narrative that previously have constituted "history". As a collective effort to expand the methodologies and topics that constitute history, these studies are intended not only for South Asianist scholars, but also for scholars of other cultural regions interested in comparative discussions of what has been called "popular culture", as well as under-graduate students just learning about South Asia...</div> </div> The third purpose in putting together this collection of essays is suggested by the topics included. The authors have shared an interest in looking at everyday activities to see what these could tell us about shared values and motivations, processes of identity formation, and the self-conscious constructions of community that have marked the last century and a half in South Asia. Most of us shared as well a conviction that these elements of everyday life have significance on two levels: taken on their own terms, they identify the important building blocks of South Asian urban culture; and, related to the larger geographical, ecological, and political worlds in which they operate, they provide rational explanations for the actions of the ordinary person in these larger contexts.</div> </div> <b>Sandria B. Freitag </b>teaches visual culture and modern South Asian history in the History Department of North Carolina State University.</div> </div>

An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div> </div> In 1971, a group of young people broke into a closed down military area in Copenhagen. It was located not more than a mile from the Royal Danish Palace and the Danish parliament. Soon, the media published images and reports from the proclamation of the Freetown Christiania, and people travelled from all over Europe to be part of the foundation of a new community. A 'Christiania Act' passed by a broad parliamentary majority in 1989 legalised the squat and made it possible to grant Christiania the rigth to collective use of the area. However, this was reversed under the Liberal-Conservative government in 2004 when the parliament decided on changes in the 1989 Christiania law. The Freetown has refused to give up its claims on the property so it remains highly contested. Around 900 people live in Christiania today. It is governed through a decentralised democratic structure, whose autonomy is strongly contingent on the Freetown's external relations with the Danish government, the Copenhagen Municipality, the Copenhagen Police and to the organised crime in connection with the cannabis trade. This book brings together ten researchers from various disciplines; Sociology, Anthropology, History, Geography, Art, Urban planning, Landscape architecture and Political science to bring thier own reflections on the unique community that is Christiania. In the introductory chapter, the editors provide an overview of the research that has been done on the settlement from the early 1970s to the 2000s.</div> </div> <b>Contents:</b></div> </div> Håkan Thörn, Cathrin Wasshede and Tomas Nilson - Introduction: From 'social experiment' to 'urban alternative' - 40 years of research on the Freetown</div> René Karpantschof - Bargaining and barricades - the political struggle over the Freetown Christiania 1971-2011</div> Håkan Thörn - Governing freedom - debating Christiania in the Danish Parliament</div> Signe Sophie Bøggild - Happy ever after? <div><b>Extract from the introduction by George F. McLean and Robert Magliola : </b></div> </div> Ten years ago an international seminar of The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy took up this question of "urbanization and values". The study printed under the same title was divided into three parts : I. The history and theory of the development of cities; II. The impact of cities upon values; and III. Humanization : the impact of values upon the urban environment.</div> </div> The present study of urbanization has been carried out most recently by a team of The Institute of Philosophy of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. It continues the investigation of these issues, yet is distinct in a number of significant ways... It focuses on the specific case of Shanghai which as the major Chinese commercial city has long had a uniquely urban and cosmopolitan physical and cultural character.</div> </div> <b>Contents : </b></div> </div> INTRODUCTION - George F. An account of the resource
<div><b>From the preface : </b></div> </div> Many recent urban sociology textbooks have come close to abandoning the traditional concern of urban sociology, which is the community in urban society. Emphasis has shifted to individual adaptations to urban society or to characteristics of urban society. This book returns to an emphasis on the concept of community and integrates contemporary knowledge about local communities with an analysis of the nature and problems of urban society. The focus is sociologically sound, and, at least as important, it allows students to relate their own experiences to the analysis.</div> </div> The theories and data needed to understand cities, communities, and urban problems are presented so that students with only a minimal background in sociology should be able to use this book. Complex theoretical issues are developed logically and clearly and are related to concrete examples. The materials and issues presented should be especially helpful to students working toward associate and baccalaureate degrees in such fields as urban studies, urban planning, and urban sociology.</div> </div> <b>Contents : </b></div> </div> Part 1 : Theoretical and historical perspectives</div> 1. An account of the resource
<b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div>
</div>
This volume traces the major decisions, events, programs, and personalities that transformed the city of Pittsburgh during its urban renewal project, which began in 1977. Roy Lubove demonstrates how the city showed united determination to attract high technology companies in an attempt to reverse the economic fallout from the decline of the local steel industry. Lubove also separates the successes from the failures, the good intentions from the actual results.</div>

Description
An account of the resource
<b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div> </div> Larry Bennett's <i>Fragments of Cities: The New American Downtowns and Neighborhoods</i> examines the social consequences of both the new approaches to downtown design and the physical upgrading of residential neighborhoods.</div> </div> Bennett draws upon lively case studies - ranging from Detroit's Renaissance Center to New York City's SoHo to Chicago's Wrigley Field - to relate physical redevelopment and urban social life. He demonstrates that a small, well-located delicatessen can bring people together while clusters of multi-million-dollar office centers in renovated downtowns can drive them apart.</div> </div> Bennett's evaluation of contemporary urban rebuilding, which is unique in giving equal attention to the political, economic, and social impact of urban design and rebuilding, is frequently pessimistic. He finds that the gentrification of many big-city neighborhoods and the design strategies chracterizing new downtowns do little to promote street life, unplanned social encounters, or public life in general. Bennett also contends some advocates and practitioners of the much-praised neighborhood movement have chosen isolation and local security as their primary goals, thus echoing in their concerns the physical plans developed by urban designers. In contrast, Bennett argues, both groups should embrace a vision that encompasses the entire city, or they will risk losing some of the best things cities encourage - surprise, tolerance, innovation, and democratic participation.</div> </div> Bennett does find cause for optimism in the designs of some particularly innovative architects and planners, and he praises the broadening initiatives taken by many residents acting independently to give life to their cities. American cities face a crossroads, he says, and must choose between becoming genuine communities or a series of isolated zones.</div> </div> <b>Contents:</b></div> 1. The new American city</div> 2. The downtown renaissance</div> 3. Neighborhood or enclave?</div> 4. Three visions of the prospective American city</div> 5. The environmental politics of neighborhood</div> 6. The future of the new American city</div> </div> <b>Larry Bennett </b>is Associate Professor of Political Science at DePaul University.</div> </div>
