</div>
Marilena Liguori's dissertation focuses on multiculturalism and ethnocultural diversity in Toronto and seeks to explore the everyday lived experiences of recent immigrants. This work examines the role of urban imaginaries in entrepreneurial city marketing strategies in relation to the consolidation of the competitive city, which involve representations of 'diversity without difference' or the commodification of ethnocultural diversity.</div>

</div>
Today I'll be mentioning a number of different kinds of diversity... and asking the general question, what are our limits in allowing them their expression in the city? I'll be drawing on some of my own recent work, and on the work of lots of colleagues, to make the argument that though we in Australia are well-schooled in the discourses of things like multi-culturalism that value and acknowledge diversity, there is some evidence in our cities that we, some of us, are not very good, in fact, at accommodating or encouraging, and sometimes even tolerating, some differences. And that sometimes visible difference has become tied up with fear, notions of risk, and disorder.</div>

<div><b>Présentation par l'éditeur :</b><br /> <br /> L'aménagement et la régulation des territoires urbains du vivre ensemble constituent depuis longtemps un objectif des politiques publiques en France comme aux Etats-Unis. Si jusqu'aux années 2000, le problème restait circonscrit aux quartiers de relégation, désormais la diversification de la diversité (ethnique, sociale et culturelle) a gagné l'ensemble des espaces urbains et des villes et pose de nouveaux enjeux.</div> </div> Ceux-ci questionnent la nature et les formes de la ségrégation et de la fragmentation urbaine tout comme les rapports qu'entretiennent les individus issus de la diversité avec le pouvoir en ville. De nouveaux défis apparaissent en termes éducatifs, résidentiels, culturels et politiques dans des villes marquées par l'éclatement des espaces et la généralisation d'injonctions à faire mixité, proximité ou encore citoyenneté.<br /> <br /> <b>David Giband</b> est géographe, professeur des universités en urbanisme et aménagement du territoire à l'Université Perpignan Via Domitia, il est directeur adjoint de l'UMR ART-DEV (Acteurs, Réseaux, Territoires dans le développement).</div> </div>
