An account of the resource

Abstract from the distributor :

Melvyn Bragg presents the first of a two-part discussion about the history of the city. With Peter Hall, Julia Merritt and Greg Woolf.

The story of cities is widely held to begin in the 8th millennium BC in Mesopotamia. By 4000 BC, there were cities in the Indus Valley, by 3000 BC in Egypt, and by 2000 BC in China. What happened in the west was the furthest ripple of that phenomenon.

In 1000 BC Athens still only had a population of one thousand. At its height, Athens' position as a powerful Mediterranean trading city allowed it to become the birthplace of much that would later characterise western cities, from politics through architecture to culture.

Then, early in the first millenium AD, the world saw its first million-strong city: Rome. Maintaining a population of this size required stupendous feats of organisation and ingenuity. But in following centuries, as Rome declined and fell, the city itself, in the west at least, declined too; power emanated from kings and their mobile courts, rather than particular settlements.

In China, urban trading posts continued to flourish, but their innovative energy dwindled before the end of the first millennium.

Between 1150 and the onset of the Black Death in 1350, the city underwent a resurgence in Europe. City-states developed in Italy and in Germany.

At this stage, there was no omnipotent power-centre to match Ancient Rome. But with the growth of sea and then ocean trade, and the centralisation of power in capitals ruling nation-states, cities like London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam and St Petersburg became increasingly wealthy, dynamic and ostentatious. By 1801, one of these - London - finally matched Ancient Rome's peak population of a million.

Along the way, the city had become an ideal to be revered and a spectre to be feared.

Melvyn Bragg is an author, broadcaster and media personality.

Peter Hall is Professor of Planning and Regeneration at The Bartlett School of Planning, University College London.

Julia Merritt is Associate Professor of History at the University of Nottingham.

Greg Woolfis is Professor of Ancient History at the University of St Andrews.

An account of the resource

An account of the resource

An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher :

Urban theory and archaeology merge to create a readable discussion of how ancient cities came to be. Although many consider our modern social ills to be the consequence of Capitalism, many urban problems are traceable to pre-Capitalist times and thus are more related to Urbanization. Ancient cities shared many characteristics with modern cities. For instance, the ancient cities of Rome and Carthage at the time of Christ had population densities approaching that of Manhattan Island today. The Canaanites, fifteen hundred years before, lived in cities oriented toward trade and dependent upon mass production of such items as wine, olive oil, and the pottery to contain such goods. Over three thousand years before the Common Era, the city of Uruk was part of a larger "global system" that resembled in its own way the globalization that we know today. Cities first arose in Mesopotamia about 5,500 years ago, but for 5,500 years before the rise of cities the small agricultural village was the most complex form of human social organization—clearly there was nothing inevitable about the city. The Evolution of the Ancient City explores what we can learn of modern cities by tracing the development of ancient cities.

Alexander R.
Abstract from the publisher :

The Roman province of Africa was one of richest in the Empire and as a result has some of the most spectacular remains. "The Cities of Roman Africa" examines the development of urban space and cultural life in this province from the beginnings of Roman rule in the second century BC to the fall of the province of Africa to the Vandals in AD 439.

In this engaging and strikingly illustrated new book, Gareth Sears considers the incorporation of Roman culture into Africa, and its use by African populations and, in particular, their elites. The author also explores the persistence of pre-Roman cultures, and how these factors affected the evolution of the cities, intellectual life and even entertainment under the Republic and Empire.

Gareth Sears is a lecturer in Roman History at the University of Birmingham. Description
An account of the resource
Abstract from the 1968 edition : Long regarded as the definitive study of the early history of the English medieval borough, this book presents a thorough review of the 'thorny question of origins' and the theories of scholars such as Carl Stephenson and Maitland. Professor Tait begins by considering the rise of towns in the Anglo-Saxon period before the Danish wars, and follows the process of fortification in response to the Danish threat, assessing its significance in the origin of boroughs. The second part of the study deals with the post-Conquest period and examines the growth of merchant and class guilds, the evolution of the concept of 'free borough' and the early development of the fee farm system. The latter is studied in great detail and in the light of the published Pipe Rolls. The book concludes with Tait's British Academy lecture on the study of early municipal history in England. First published in 1936, this was the second major work of James Tait (1863 - 1944), a seminal figure in the development of the school of history in Manchester and in Manchester University Press, and a scholar described by V. H. Galbraith as 'one of the most revered figures in English medieval studies'. Alternative link to the book.

An account of the resource

Abstract from the publisher :

The city is widely regarded as the most characteristic expression of the social, cultural and economic formations of the Roman Empire. This was especially true in the Latin-speaking West, where urbanism was much less deeply ingrained than in the Greek-speaking East but where networks of cities grew up during the centuries following conquest and occupation. This up-to-date and well-illustrated synthesis provides students and specialists with an overview of the development of the city in Italy, Gaul, Britain, Germany, Spain and North Africa, whether their interests lie in ancient history, Roman archaeology or the wider history of urbanism. It accounts not only for the city's geographical and temporal spread and its associated monuments (such as amphitheatres and baths), but also for its importance to the rulers of the Empire as well as the provincials and locals.

Ray Laurence is Head of the Classical and Archaeological Studies Section of the School of European Culture and Languages, the University of Kent.
Simon Esmonde Cleary is a Reader in Roman Archaeology, Head of Archaeology and Deputy Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity at the University of Birmingham.
Gareth Sears is a Lecturer in Ancient History in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Birmingham.
