Cette conférence a été enregistrée dans le cadre du programme pluridisciplinaire de la MRSH Le temps de l'Empire ibérique, dont le thème pour l'année 2012-13 est consacré aux Villes, espaces de pouvoir.<br />
<br />
<b>Jean-Paul Duviols</b>, agrégé d'espagnol et docteur d'Etat, est professeur émérite de l'université de Paris IV-Sorbonne, où il occupait la chaire de littérature et civilisation latino-américaine. Il est spécialisé dans l'étude de la période précolombienne, des voyages de découverte, de la colonisation ainsi que dans l'analyse iconographique. Il a dirigé de nombreux ouvrages pour les Presses Universitaires de Paris Sorbonne. Il anime depuis vingt ans, le premier jeudi de chaque mois, les Tribunes des livres de la Maison de l'Amérique latine.<br />

Résumé de la conférence :<br />

Cette conférence traite des représentations iconographiques de différentes villes du Nouveau Monde à l'époque coloniale, représentations qui généralement sont loin d'être réalistes et peuvent plutôt être qualifiées d'interprétations.<br />
<br />
Les premières gravures montrant les villes édifiées par les conquérants espagnols, anonymes et probablement réalisées par des dessinateurs qui n'avaient jamais vu ces villes, se composent d'éléments convenus, de stéréotypes urbains n'ayant aucun rapport avec la réalité américaine : ainsi, le château est un élément fondamental de ces représentations. Il en sera ainsi pendant longtemps : gravures, dessins et plans ont pour but de représenter, plutôt que la réalité, une vision idéale qui suit de près des canons européens, eux-mêmes élaborés dans la continuité de l'Antiquité : on verra fréquemment un plan en damier avec une place centrale, disposition permettant une parfaite organisation de l'espace urbain. Même les images ou les plans des villes existantes qui ne furent pas détruites par les conquérants (Cuzco par exemple) montrent des villes fortifiées et des bâtiments de style européen. On constate également l'importance des éléments religieux et notamment des références à Jérusalem dans la représentation des villes.<br />
<br />
Cette vaste entreprise iconographique, qui consiste plutôt en une reconstitution qu'en une peinture fidèle, a exercé une emprise durable puisqu'elle s'est étendue jusqu'au XIXe siècle.</div>

City Sites is an inter- and multi-disciplinary study of the iconography, spatial forms and visual and literary cultures of New York and Chicago in the period 1870s to 1930s. City Sites is the result of collaborative research by scholars from Europe and the U.S.A and presents a pioneering approach to American urbanism utilising analytical possibilities offered by new multimedia technologies.<br />
<br />
City Sites is part of the 3Cities research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Board and is based at the University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham in the UK.</div>
