<div><b>Abstract from the distributor : </b></div>
</div>
The colloquium will be focused on one particular city – London – and will bring together the themes of food growing, ‘public’ space and the city to explore thought-provoking questions around food equity, access to public and semi-private space, and the ability of different socio-economic groups to establish their own interests in city planning and construction processes that have consequences for private and community-based food production and distribution (e.g. the provision and retention of community food growing spaces, the creation of productive and educative school grounds, the provision of housing with growing and food preparation spaces). The issue of food, food production and public spaces in cities is currently high on the political agenda. While urban agriculture has a long history, contemporary concerns over the environmental impacts of ‘food miles’ and our industrialised countryside, food security issues, together with growing recognition of the health, social and community benefits of gardening, are driving the issue of local urban food production up the political agenda. With waiting lists for allotments in Camden, for example, currently stretching to an estimated 40 years, and with the nation’s front gardens disappearing under tarmac car parking, attention is turning to the food growing potential of a multitude of overlooked and undervalued city sites.</div>

An account of the resource
<div><b>Organisers' description : </b></div>
</div>
The paper considers how contemporary cities are constructed, framed and understood through vertical axes and dimensions. It charts upward trajectories in not only iconic high-rises, but in vertical gardens, townships, slums and urban farms, and in modes and methods of urban transport. The paper argues that these vertical manifestations and domains of urban life are not simply a response to space constraints and land values but mark and make visible new forms of social and political power, which disrupt notions of centre-periphery in traditional, flatter models of the city. Although recognising the validity and relevance of highlighting and analysing spatial dichotomies between vertical and horizontal urban worlds, the paper seeks to complicate such binaries. Drawing on recent research from Mumbai, the paper explores and identifies overlapping (or vertizontal) connections, practices and assemblages in three-dimensional city-making.</div>

<div><b>Présentation par l'éditeur :</b></div>
</div>
<br />

</div>
<br />

</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />

<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> </div> Remembering, Forgetting and City Builders critically explores how urban spaces are designed, planned and experienced in relation to the politics of collective and personal memory construction. Bringing together case studies from North America, South Asia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the book analyzes how contested national, ethnic and cultural sentiments clash in planning and experiencing urban spaces. Going beyond the claim that such situations exist in many parts of the world because communities construct their 'past memories' within their current daily life and future aspirations, the book explores how the very acts of planning and urban design are rooted in the existing structures of hegemonic power.<br /> <br /> With contributors from the fields of architecture, geography, planning, anthropology and sociology, urban studies and cultural studies, the book provides a rich, interdisciplinary view into the conflicts over memory and belonging which are spatially expressed and mediated through the official planning apparatus.</div> </div> <b>Contents : </b></div> </div> Introduction, Haim Yacobi and Tovi Fenster<br /> Remembering forgotten landscapes: community gardens in New York City and the reconstruction of cultural diversity, Efrat Eizenberg<br /> Memory, recognition and the architecture of a diasporic place: the case of Netivot, Israel, Haim Yacobi <br /> Neighbourhood and belonging: Turkish immigrant women constructing the everyday public space, Eda Ünlü-Yücesoy <br /> Memory, belonging, and resistance: the struggle over place among the Bedouin-Arabs of the Negev, Safa Abu-Rabia<br /> One place – different memories: the case of Yaad and Miaar, Tovi Fenster<br /> The reconstructed city as rhetorical space: the case of Volgograd, Elena Trubina<br /> Seoul: city, identity, and the construction of the past, Guy Podoler<br /> 'We shouldn't sell our country!': the reconfiguration of Jewish urban property and ethno-national political discourses and projects in (post) Socialist Romania, Damiana Gabriela Otoiu<br /> Forgetting and remembering: Frankfurt's Altstadt after the Second World War, Marianne Rodenstein<br /> From 'patrimoine partagé' to 'whose heritage'? An account of the resource
<div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div>
<br />
In cities around the world, individuals and groups are reclaiming and creating urban sites, temporary spaces and informal gathering places. These ‘insurgent public spaces’ challenge conventional views of how urban areas are defined and used, and how they can transform the city environment. No longer confined to traditional public areas like neighbourhood parks and public plazas, these guerrilla spaces express the alternative social and spatial relationships in our changing cities.<br />
<br />
With nearly 20 illustrated case studies, this volume shows how instances of insurgent public space occur across the world. Examples range from community gardening in Seattle and Los Angeles, street dancing in Beijing, to the transformation of parking spaces into temporary parks in San Francisco.<br />
<br />
Drawing on the experiences and knowledge of individuals extensively engaged in the actual implementation of these spaces, Insurgent Public Space is a unique cross-disciplinary approach to the study of public space use, and how it is utilised in the contemporary, urban world. Appealing to professionals and students in both urban studies and more social courses, Hou has brought together valuable commentaries on an area of urbanism which has, up until now, been largely ignored.</div>

</div>

<br />
Ces espaces de passage sont également nécessaires à la défense, à la vie administrative dans le cadre d’une banlieue, à l’économie dans un <i>hinterland</i>, l’équivalent du <i>contado</i> des villes italiennes.</div>
</div>
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />

Description
An account of the resource
Abstract from the publisher :
Among the many 'utopian' proposals of the 19th century, this particular short text stands out. Howard was a 19th century British reformer and city planner. He was influenced by Bellamy's Looking Backwards. He saw new, planned towns as a necessary counterbalance to the squalid, Dickensian 19th century London. These towns would balance urban and rural occupations, and include a whole range of amenities which we have come to take for granted: libraries, museums, schools, wide avenues, and a mix of commercial and residential zones. Howard strove to keep a balance between the community and individual needs, and to operate within the framework of Capitalism, rather than rejecting or attempting to replace it.
This book was originally published in 1898 as To-morrow, and reissued in 1902 as Garden Cities of To-morrow. The first Garden City, built under the aegis of Howard, Letchworth, was founded in 1903 (Howard was one of the first residents). Later he founded a second Garden City, Welwyn, 1919. Both, now London suburbs, are still very much in existence and proved successful over time, with its residents, in particular, in better health than the general population. Howard's proposal had a great influence on urban planning in the 20th century, particularly post-WWII. The American urban planning critic, Lewis Mumford, was one of Howard's proponents. In the history of planned societies, Ebenezer Howard stands out as one of the successes, even though he is little-known other than to architects and urban planners.
Ebenezer Howard (1850 - 1928) was a prominent British urban planner.

Description
An account of the resource
<div><b>Présentation par l'éditeur :</b></div>
</div>
<br />
</div>
</div>
</div>
</div>

<br />
</div>
<br />
