Presenting an original take on women’s safety in the cities of twenty-first century India, Why Loiter? maps the exclusions and negotiations that women from different classes and communities encounter in the nation’s urban public spaces.

Basing this book on more than three years of research in Mumbai, Shilpa Phadke, Sameera Khan and Shilpa Ranade argue that though women’s access to urban public space has increased, they still do not have an equal claim to public space in the city. And they raise the question: can women’s access to public space be viewed in isolation from that of other marginal groups?

Going beyond the problem of the real and implied risks associated with women’s presence in public, they draw from feminist theory to argue that only by celebrating loitering—a radical act for most Indian women—can a truly equal, global city be created.

In a rapidly urbanizing world -- over half the world’s population lives in urban areas, including many millions in informal settlement -- the large cities of the developing world in particular are expanding. Yet there is little in the way of planning and preparation for this explosive growth in urban population. Making Room for a Planet of Cities is a comprehensive and original analysis of the quantitative dimensions of past, present, and future global urban land cover, culminating in a proposed new paradigm for preparing for explosive growth in cities the world over. Carefully selected metrics measured in four new data sets with ArcGIS software provide a comprehensive and consistent global and historical perspective on urban expansion. These data sets are:

1. The built-up areas of a global sample of 120 cities with 100,000 people or more, 1990 and 2000, based on satellite images;
2. Historic population density data in digital images for 20 U. S. cities, 1910–2000, based on census tracts;
3. Built-up areas of a representative global sample of 30 cities, 1800–2000, from the set of 120 cities based on historic maps; and
4. Urban land cover areas of the universe of 3,646 cities that had populations of 100,000 or more in 2000, based on satellite images.

The key findings show that on average, densities in developing countries are double those in Europe and Japan, and densities in Europe and Japan are double those of the United States, Canada, and Australia; and that on average, the annual growth rate of urban land cover was twice that of the urban population between 1990 and 2000. Most of the cities studied expanded their built-up area more than 16-fold in the twentieth century. At present rates of density decline, the world’s urban population is expected to double in 43 years, while urban land cover will double in only 19 years. The urban population of the developing countries is expected to double between 2000 and 2030 while the built-up area of their cities can be expected to triple.

The research suggests that preparation for the sustainable growth of cities in rapidly urbanizing countries should be grounded in four key components: the realistic projections of urban land needs; generous metropolitan limits; selective protection of open space; and an arterial grid of roads spaced one kilometer apart that can support transit.

Making Room for a Planet of Cities provides both the conceptual framework and, for the first time, the basic empirical data and quantitative dimensions of past, present, and future urban expansion in cities around the world that are necessary for making minimal preparations for the massive urban growth expected in the coming decades.

In the 21st century, urban development is facing new challenges caused by the parallel occurrence of both growing and shrinking cities. The development patterns and instruments of urban growth are well-known. However, the processes of shrinkage and its broad societal consequences, which affect an increasing number of cities, need intensive investigation.

Using the example of German urban development, Dr. Sigrun Kabisch describes the causes and consequences of urban shrinkage. The discussion of the “Urban restructuring program” as the political answer to urban shrinkage draws attention to the complex linkages in urban development. In particular, housing demolition as one reaction to shrinkage can bring about new urban land use patterns including more green and open spaces on the one hand, but also psychological stress situations for the affected inhabitants on the other.

Based on this finding, Dr. Kabisch argues, we need new thinking about urban development. A comprehensive approach with context sensitivity is necessary to discover and use the opportunities of urban shrinkage. In this vein, accepting shrinkage as an urban pathway can help to develop the affected cities in a more sustainable way.

Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgement Day and the battlefield of today's clash of civilisations. From King David to Barack Obama, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of 3,000 years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism and coexistence.

How did this small, remote town become the Holy City, the 'centre of the world' and now the key to peace in the Middle East? In a gripping narrative, Simon Sebag Montefiore reveals this ever-changing city in its many incarnations, bringing every epoch and character blazingly to life. Jerusalem's biography is told through the wars, love affairs and revelations of the men and women - kings, empresses, prophets, poets, saints, conquerors and whores - who created, destroyed, chronicled and believed in Jerusalem. As well as the many ordinary Jerusalemites who have left their mark on the city, its cast varies from Solomon, Saladin and Suleiman the Magnificent to Cleopatra, Caligula and Churchill; from Abraham to Jesus and Muhammad; from the ancient world of Jezebel, Nebuchadnezzar, Herod and Nero to the modern times of the Kaiser, Disraeli, Mark Twain, Rasputin and Lawrence of Arabia.

Drawing on new archives, current scholarship, his own family papers and a lifetime's study, Montefiore illuminates the essence of sanctity and mysticism, identity and empire in a unique story of the city that many believe will be the setting for the Apocalypse. This is how Jerusalem became Jerusalem: the only city that exists twice - in heaven and on earth.

The epic story of Jerusalem told through the lives of the men and women who created, ruled and inhabited it.

Simon Sebag Montefiore is an historian and award-winning author of books including 'Young Stalin' and 'Stalin : The court of the red Tsar'.

“State, Space and Citizenship” is the title of a year of thematic programming on key issues confronting Indian cities, beginning in January 2009. This is sponsored by the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of Michigan as a part of the Trehan India Initiative.

The United Nations estimates that India’s urban population will nearly double to reach 586 million by 2030. This urbanization is taking place as the country grapples with the dramatic challenges and promises presented by economic liberalization and exposure to global flows of people, ideas, finance, investment, and media.

The first Trehan India Initiative Theme Year at the University of Michigan will address how urbanization is transforming contemporary India socially, economically, politically, culturally, and environmentally. It will focus on three closely related areas of investigation:

1. Transformations in urban politics and the role of the state in urban development
2. Changes in the production of urban space
3. Issues of citizenship and politics in the urban realm.

Solomon Benjamin is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Toronto. He was previously a consultant on urban development issues and an independent scholar based in Bangalore.

Ravi Sundaram is a fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), and a founding member of SARAI, a coalition of researchers that has had a major impact on contemporary scholarship on urban issues in India.

Paromita Vohra is a filmmaker and writer whose work plays with fiction and non-fiction to focus on ideas of gender, urban life and popular culture.

                <text>
