<text>Throughout its history, Population Geography has always favoured the spatial aspect both when studying population distribution ans spatial pattern differentiations. The spatial approach, however, has changed. But in the 90s, Population Geography is still divided between followers of spatial demography and those practitioners that broaden our subject-matter to pay more attention to the social and academic context. So, it seems as if the discussion on the meaning and role played by place and daily life in globalization is arriving at Population Geography, because nowadays global dimension of geodemographic facts is a fact, but the local dimension is a fact as well.</text>

<text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div> &nbsp;</div> Since the 1967 riots that ripped apart the city, Detroit has traditionally been viewed either as a place in ruins or a metropolis on the verge of rejuvenation. In Digital Detroit: Rhetoric and Space in the Age of the Network, author Jeff Rice goes beyond the notion of Detroit as simply a city of two ideas. Instead he explores the city as a web of multiple meanings which, in the digital age, come together in the city&rsquo;s spaces to form a network that shapes the writing, the activity, and the very thinking of those around it.<br /> <br /> Rice focuses his study on four of Detroit&rsquo;s most iconic places&mdash;Woodward Avenue, the Maccabees Building, Michigan Central Station, and 8 Mile&mdash;covering each in a separate chapter. Each of these chapters explains one of the four features of network rhetoric: folksono(me), the affective interface, response, and decision making. As these rhetorical features connect, they form the overall network called Digital Detroit. Rice demonstrates how new media, such as podcasts, wikis, blogs, interactive maps, and the Internet in general, knit together Detroit into a digital network whose identity is fluid and ever-changing. In telling Detroit&rsquo;s spatial story, Rice deftly illustrates how this new media, as a rhetorical practice, ultimately shapes understandings of space in ways that computer applications and city planning often cannot. The result is a model for a new way of thinking and interacting with space and the imagination, and for a better understanding of the challenges network rhetorics pose for writing.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Jeff Rice </b>is the Martha P. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Media at the University of Kentucky.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

&nbsp;</div>
Today there is a widespread fear of crime on a global scale. This can be seen as a response to social inequalities, social polarisation and the fragmentation of cities, which has to a large extent been caused by neo-liberalism. Worldwide, an increasing number of middle and high-income groups have looked to security measures, such as cameras, fences, walls and gates, to separate themselves from other people in the city. These physical measures, in combination with hired guards, replace the &lsquo;older&rsquo; social control mechanisms, which are based on social cohesion within the community concerned. One may question whether those living in gated &lsquo;communities&rsquo; indeed feel responsible for other urbanites. In other words, will such a hard closure (physically-marked segregation) lead to soft closure, reflected in social-cultural and political segregation? What is the impact of the lifestyle(s) of those living in gated communities on the dynamics of the city, urban identity and urban governance?</div>
&nbsp;</div>
<b>Peer Smets</b> is assistant professor at the department of sociology, VU University Amsterdam and has recently co-edited the special issue &lsquo;Countering Urban Segregation&rsquo; of Urban Studies. Nowadays, he publishes on neighbourhood dynamics in Amsterdam and interethnic contacts at the neighbourhood level.</div>
