<text>This thesis describes, conceptualizes and explains the segregated spatiality of everyday life of young affluent heads of households in post-war Beirut, Lebanon. It tracks how young affluent heads of households have come to produce the living spaces of their everyday life in a spatially segregated way that rejects the local and is stretched out over the totality of the city.

Its main objectives are to contribute to the literature on spatial segregation by (1) conceptualizing segregation in its residential and non-residential manifestations as actively and passively practiced by a certain profile of affluent individuals and (2) explaining the logic behind this type of segregation from the point of view of affluent individuals that are actively pursuing segregation.

This research has utilized an ethnographic research approach that started from observing and understanding the motivations of individuals who are actively pursuing segregation. Based mainly on a qualitative research methodology, this research has utilized ethnographic field notes, qualitative interviews and participant observation with young affluent heads of households. The findings of this qualitative research have been supported by questionnaires that were distributed in five elite childcare nurseries in Beirut in which young affluent heads of households were outcropped. A total of 118 questionnaires were collected.

The four core chapters of this thesis discuss the relationship of affluence to the local place around the home, to places of play, to non--places and to places of passage in post war Beirut. They conceptualize the spatiality of affluence in Beirut and propose the concept of the layer as one that captures the pattern of this spatiality and unlocks its logic. This thesis concludes by raising questions related to the changing role of neighbourhoods in Beirut and the changing nature of its urban condition. Indeed, to affluent individuals in Beirut the neighbourhood has become a space with which they avoid getting in contact, while, paradoxically, the city is perceived as a small neighbourly space where everyone knows everyone else.</text>

<text>Spatial frictions between population and employment.

With census data, we examine whether the distribution of jobs and that of people over the French territory display a greater degree of « harmony » in 1990 than they did in 1982. Counter-urbanization around the cities is still going on. But since the excess of births over deaths is larger in towns than it is in the rural parts of the country, there has been virtually no change in the degree of concentration of people over the territory. The increase of employment, however, benefited more to cities (especially the larger ones) than it did to the country. This widening gap between the distribution of people and that of jobs has resulted in an increase of commuting. </text>

As the result of reproduction rate falling for the last twenty years~small children aren't proportionaly more numerous than in 1945. To the opposition between young populated areas and elderly populated ones can be added the opposition between towns and the country. In these circumstancies, what can be done to allow small children coming from rural sparcely populated areas, to get into infant schools? The varied choosen methods must suit the local realities and prospects and demand a real vitality from the villages. Such a kind of schooling can only take a place thanks to considerable subsidies.

<text>Labour Market Incorporation of Young Migrants and Young People from a Foreign Origin.

One of the multiple aims of the MGIS survey was to enable the study of how young immigrants and young people born in France from foreign parents enter the labour force market.
At the time of the survey, most young people were in active employment. A difference was observed between immigrants or «foreign origin» young people with Spanish or Portuguese origins and those of Algerian origin, the latter groups being less often actively employed than the former. This was the case for both men and women. Educational qualifications only explained part of these differences. Generally, the family is called upon for help in job-seeking. This is particularly so for Portuguese immigrants and the young people from Spanish or Portuguese origin without qualification. Young Algerian immigrants or young people born in France from at least one Algerian parent occupy a disadvantaged position, whether one is looking at the first employment status after completion of education, the succession of various statuses throughout their occupational histories or the length of the period separating the completion of studies and begining of the first employment or present employment. These results may be considered as ample proof of the genuine difficulties encountered by these young people on entering the labour market. The results also suggest that the aspirations of this group are higher.</text>

The "popular" quarters, at once endogenous and backward, raised the problem of the causes of the inherited disorder, which was actually an identifying factor, along with the stakes involved in transposing imported models. The problem was first given a name by Muhammad Abd al-Karîm, a civil servant who visited these sections of the city on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs.</text>

<text>Profile of the Users of the Different Modern Health Care Services in the Central Benin.

According to which criteria do the Benineses choose among the rather diversified modern health care services now available ? This hypothesis was checked by studying over a two-years-period the structure, by sex, age, type of disease and place of origin, of the users of all the modern health care services (public, private and church supported) from the Ouessè district (Central Benin). It was found out that, the weaker the perceived therapeutical efficiency, the more numerous are the children and adult male users, the smaller the attraction area and the narrower the range of treated diseases with in parallel a strong increase in paludism cases.</text>

<text><div><b>From the preface : </b></div> &nbsp;</div> Many recent urban sociology textbooks have come close to abandoning the traditional concern of urban sociology, which is the community in urban society. Emphasis has shifted to individual adaptations to urban society or to characteristics of urban society. This book returns to an emphasis on the concept of community and integrates contemporary knowledge about local communities with an analysis of the nature and problems of urban society. The focus is sociologically sound, and, at least as important, it allows students to relate their own experiences to the analysis.</div> &nbsp;</div> The theories and data needed to understand cities, communities, and urban problems are presented so that students with only a minimal background in sociology should be able to use this book. Complex theoretical issues are developed logically and clearly and are related to concrete examples. The materials and issues presented should be especially helpful to students working toward associate and baccalaureate degrees in such fields as urban studies, urban planning, and urban sociology.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Contents : </b></div> &nbsp;</div> Part 1 : Theoretical and historical perspectives</div> 1. <text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div> &nbsp;</div> A &lsquo;science of cities and regions&rsquo; is critical for meeting future challenges. The world is urbanising: huge cities are being created and are continuing to grow rapidly. There are many planning and development issues arising in different manifestations in countries across the globe. These developments can, in principle, be simulated through mathematical computer models which provide tools for forecasting and testing future scenarios and plans. These models can represent the functioning of cities and regions, predicting the spatial demography and the economy, the main flows such as journey to work or to services, and the mechanisms of future evolution. In this book, the main principles involved in the design of this range of models are articulated, providing an account of the current state of the art as well as future research challenges.<br /> <br /> Alan Wilson has over forty years working with urban and regional models and has contributed important discoveries. He has distilled this experience into what serves as both an introduction and a review of the research frontier. Topics covered include the Lowry model, the retail model, principles of account-based models and the methods rooted in Boltzmann-style statistical modelling and the Lotka-Volterra approach to system evolution. Applications range from urban and regional planning to wars and epidemics.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Alan Wilson </b>is Professor of Urban and Regional Systems in the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London and Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>
