This paper studies for 1981 the retirement migrations from the metropolitan area of Milan. We have used both census data (household sample) and register data (all migrations in 1981). The findings show that retirement migrations do exist in the metropolitan area of Milan, although they are rather rare. Men migrate a little more often than do women, couples more than families living with (adult) children. The probability of migrating also varies according to residence (more in the town centre than in the suburbs), and this is mainly due to extra-metropolitan migration. </text>

</text>

<text>The purpose of this article is to share theoretical ideas underway in the social geography and more broadly to examine the role of geography in the social sciences. Two major tendencies can be distinguished, related to the major theoretical tasks in social geography, both relevant across the discipline. First, it has been deemed necessary to include geography in a mode of critical knowledge able to integrate the values of empowerment and justice in the development of the knowledge produced. In a second step we highlight the contribution of geography to the social inclusion of the discipline in the social sciences. Confirming this, we claim simultaneously the importance and pervasiveness of space and engage in a dimensional approach to space beyond the contradiction of a science that would be social while taking up space intended, in order to assert its autonomy. This requires a deconstruction of spatial categories in force within the discipline and the adoption of concepts that refer to the spatial dimension of social relations. </text>

</text>

The study examines the phenomenon of urban upgrading in tenant-dominated non-planned inner-city settlements of the city. It focuses on tenants’ responses and spatial transformations. The phenomenon is investigated through the analysis of case studies located in three localities. The data are primarily collected through qualitative techniques supplemented by a quantitative technique. The investigation is carried out from the perspective in which upgrading is viewed as a process embedded in a dynamic context, rather than a decontextualised static project. Based on the case studies analytical generalizations are made. </text>

<text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> &nbsp;</div> Architect Alexander D'Hooghe believes urban design has lost its way. Once among the most articulate and avant-garde of disciplines, the field now lacks, he suggests, the confidence necessary to address its most critical challenge : sprawl. In his provocative manifesto The Liberal Monument, D'Hooghe argues that architecture and urbanism must boldly intervene in city planning and growth management. This strategic use of architecture represents, for him, the last hope to revitalize the quasi-endless gray carpetspreading between the world's urban centers. D'Hooghe's starting point requires a reassessment of discarded, sometimes disgraced, late-modern theories of placemaking. D'Hooghe points out that the very idea of top-down urban planning and monumentalized space was jettisoned due to its commonly held associations with the monumental neoclassicism and symbolism employed by Nazi architect and urban planner Albert Speer. D'Hooghe respectfully posits that we should not allow this perversion of thought to preclude our own thinking at the scale of urban planning.<br /> <br /> D'Hooghe travels the world in search of experiments in urbanism and findsin the ruins of these failed utopias a way forward. He discovers in the work of 'second-generation modernists' Sigfried Giedion and Louis I. Kahn an effort to connect architecture, planning, and liberal politics. This becomes the seed for what he calls the liberal monument.<br /> <br /> The Liberal Monument is a provocative, accessible work of theory that challenges all of the accepted truths of urban design. Its goal is to restore the confidence architecture will need, whether it is building cities from the ground up in China and Dubai or managing the growth of the sprawling suburbs of Phoenix and Raleigh/Durham.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Alexander D'Hooghe </b>is an associate professor of architectural urbanism at MIT and director of the MIT Platform for a Permanent Modernity, a research group for design and theoretical investigations into ideal forms of contemporary urbanism.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

Although many consider our modern social ills to be the consequence of Capitalism, many urban problems are traceable to pre-Capitalist times and thus are more related to Urbanization. Ancient cities shared many characteristics with modern cities. For instance, the ancient cities of Rome and Carthage at the time of Christ had population densities approaching that of Manhattan Island today. The Canaanites, fifteen hundred years before, lived in cities oriented toward trade and dependent upon mass production of such items as wine, olive oil, and the pottery to contain such goods. Over three thousand years before the Common Era, the city of Uruk was part of a larger &quot;global system&quot; that resembled in its own way the globalization that we know today. Cities first arose in Mesopotamia about 5,500 years ago, but for 5,500 years before the rise of cities the small agricultural village was the most complex form of human social organization&mdash;clearly there was nothing inevitable about the city. The Evolution of the Ancient City explores what we can learn of modern cities by tracing the development of ancient cities.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Alexander R. Thomas</b> is associate professor of sociology at SUNY College at Oneonta.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

Working out the French 1975 census, we were abble to produce a geographical pattern of retirement by the seaside. We established that the flows and the characteristics of retired migrants are different whether they are directed to seaside resorts, non touristic littoral communes, inland localities. We compared the retired in-migrants to those whose lived already in the resort, and retired migrants to the active ones. Finally we tried to show how these phenomena - retirement - migration - seaside resort - are interrelated.</text>

Retirement migration is in France a very important phenomenon; one parisian household out of four, one provincial household out of eight, leaves his city for good at the time of retirement. Flows have constantly increased after world war two, but for the first time the rates of departure have lowered between 1982 and 1990 censuses. In this article we compare the propensity to move of the Parisians and «Provincials», according to social class and location in the city. Why such a difference between Parisians and Provincials retirees? What are the trends now? Is seasonal mobility becoming a surrogate for retirement migration? </text>
