- P. Ballester, Quartier d'artistes versus cluster numérique.

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

- Questions the centrality of globalization in explaining change in Asian cities and examines developing Asian cities in their own terms rather than as variants of Western urbanization.
- Explores middle cities ‘off the radar’ as well as well-known metropolises.
- Uses both quantitative and ethnographic research.

Asian Cities challenges Western paradigms of urban growth with a fresh and stimulating look at cities in developing Asia. It questions the status accorded globalization in explaining contemporary Asian cities, arguing instead that they are being transformed by three major forces – urbanization and nation-building as well as globalization. The latter two are not dependent variables of globalization, although all, in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, are shaped by capitalism.

The book reaches beyond the usual focus on metropolitan centres to examine urban life in a sample of middle-sized cities representative of hundreds of such urban centres throughout the Asian continent.

An introductory chapter outlines the arguments and introduces the sample cities. Chapters two and three explore two principal facets of urbanization: the material transformation that comes in its train and the impact that it has on the lives of the newly-urbanized. Chapters four to seven explore the way that the national framework shapes cities – including business enterprises, migrantion, travel and commercial popular culture. In a final chapter the book surveys likely trends in Asian cities over the next quarter century and considers the implications of the study for our understanding of globalization generally.

This is a nuanced study grounded in quantitatively-based findings but enriched by qualitative research that both provides additional evidence and brings the findings alive.

Malcolm McKinnon is an independent New Zealand historian who, besides researching urban development in Asia, has written extensively on New Zealand’s relations with Asia.

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

This volume explores how migration is playing a central role in the renewing and reworking of urban spaces in the fast growing and rapidly changing cities of Asia. Migration trends in Asia entered a new phase in the 1990s following the end of the Cold War which marked the advent of a renewed phase of globalization. Cities have become centrally implicated in globalization processes and, therefore, have become objects and sites of intense study.

The contributors to this book reflect on the impact and significance of migration with a particular focus on the contested spaces that are emerging in urban contexts and the economic, social, religious and cultural domains with which they intersect. They also examines the roles and effects of different forms of migration in the cauldron of urban change, from low-skilled domestic migrants who maintain a close engagement with their rural homes, to highly skilled/professional transnational migrants, to legal and illegal international migrants who arrive with the hope of transforming their livelihoods.

Providing a mosaic of insights into the links between migration, marginalization and contestation in Asia’s urban contexts, Asian Cities, Migrant Labor and Contested Spaces will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, migration studies, urban studies and human geography.

                <text>The associations between urbanization and economic development are first reviewed for the developing world. Special attributes of Middle East urbanization are then considered and levels of urbanization compared in most Middle Eastern nations. Next, special factors relating to Kuwait's urbanization are discussed. Part One concludes with a study of Kuwait's post-War economic expansion.

Part Two deals with the consequences of Kuwait's rapid economic growth. First, population increase by immigration is analysed, followed by a study of natural increase. One important result of this demographic growth was the physical expansion of all Kuwait's urban areas, particularly the capital.

Further analysis of the size and spacing of urban centres in Kuwait reveals that a primate distribution prevails. Established theories are tested againt these observations and found partially deficient. A Q-Mode Factor Analysis routine is employed to describe the dimensions of social and economic variation within all Kuwait's urban centres. Broadly, a duality between Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis, described earlier, is confirmed statistically. In addition, non-Kuwaitis are further subdivided into those of higher and lower socio-economic status.

Results of the field survey of all retail and service trade facilities in the State are presented. Their distribution, it is shown, closely corresponds to Western-derived predictive models. The use of these facilities, however, differs widely from the better-known examples in Europe and North America. Significant differences are discerned between the shopping behaviour of various national groups in Kuwait.

The study concludes by pointing out contrasts between Western and non-Western cities in genesis, structure, and functional differentation.</text>

                <text>This study of aspects of the urban geography of Makkah and Al-Madinah is the first effort to trace growth and development of the two cities. The recent rapid growth has been made possible by the great wealth generated from oil in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, although the driving force behind urban growth is the religious significance to all Muslims of the two cities. The recent rapid increases in the numbers of overseas pilgrims, together with the resident population, have encouraged the expansion of the two cities' built up areas and have necessitated the provision of further services. By highlighting the problems and difficulties, those variables which have helped to shape the present situation and establish current trends can be identified.

The thesis is divided into nine chapters, taking into consideration those factors which tend to support or inhibit their existing and future development. In the Introduction, a general background survey is given of the changing roles of the two settlements in pre-Islamic and Islamic times, this followed by a more detailed study of historical change in Chapter One. The question asked at the commencement - to what extent have the religious functions of the two cities affected their urbanism - leads to the study in Chapter Two of the holy pilgrimage itself, the provision of associated services and facilities and the effect of these on the internal characteristics and external relationships of the two cities. The regional resource base for normal and special urban activities is then considered in Chapter Three.

Population and demographic characteristics are examined in relation to process and morphology and urban land use in Chapters four to six, the fundamental importance of the holy status of the city appearing very clearly. Even in the examination, in Chapters seven and eight, of industrial, administrative and social services etc., the internal and external spatial and hierarchical characteristics of Makkah and Al-Madinah are seen to be only understandable in terms of the Hajj and religious status.

Finally, the question of how to maintain viable urban systems and meet all the requirements imposed by the unique status of the two cities is examined, and in the conclusion an overview is made of processes and trends leading up to the situation today. </text>
