In the United States, an ambitious attempt has been made over the last quarter of a century to achieve historic preservation on a scale far greater than would have been possible through the saving of structures one by one. Preservation is now sought and managed to a large extent through the designation of "historic districts"... As the number of historic districts has increased and they have assumed a conspicuous place in the urban landscape, they have received the attention of preservationists and planners. But there has not as yet been an analysis of their significance from an urban historian's point of view - even though most historic disticts are parts of towns or cities and their existence is touted in publicity releases as an oppotunity to "step back in time', to see what towns or neighborhoods were "really" like in the past. Historic districts are, and should be studies as, examples of applied urban history... One of the aims of this book is to draw the attention of urban historians to some of the implications of the development of historic districts. But it is intended too to have a broader appeal and to provide a historical context for those many Americans who in one way or another have become involved in the phenomenon - whether as residents of historic districts, members of preservation commissions, or tourists who visit the districts.</div>

The distinguished geographer and social theorist, David Harvey, will be the 22nd Annual Urban Studies Public Lecturer. The lecture is entitled ‘Neoliberalism and the City’, and will take place Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 5:00 PM. <br />
<br />
In his talk, Harvey will draw on his recent book, A Brief History of Neoliberalism (2005), in which he traces the rise of neoliberal principles based on the theory of free markets and unfettered international capital flows from an obscure economic theory to dominance on the world stage. Harvey shows how proponents of a neoliberal economic philosophy, such as the influential leaders Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, gained the consensus of key figures and economic and political institutions, driven by an aspiration to re-establish class power. He dissects the logic of neoliberalism, revealing its built-in contradictions and the tremendous variation in how it looks from place to place and at different scales. He will talk about how cities have both complied and resisted neoliberalism’s discipline.<br />
<br />
David Harvey’s career has had several phases, from work on the methodology and philosophy of geography and historical geography to an exploration of Marxist approaches, particularly related to urbanization and the crises of poverty and racism in US cities. His later work delves into such issues as environmental justice, alternative modes of urbanization, progressive approaches to addressing problems of the environment and inequality. His most recent works looks at questions of globalization and uneven geographical development within a globalizing world.<br />
<br />
<b>David Harvey</b> is a Distinguished Professor in the Ph.D. Program in Anthropology at the City University of New York Graduate Center.</div>

Depuis des dizaines d’années, les villes posent un problème central dans l’organisation de nos sociétés. Regroupant un pourcentage important de la population, elles sont devenues le mode principal d’occupation de l’espace apportant avec elles leurs paradoxes et leurs faiblesses.</div>

La banlieue est l’une d’elles. Cet espace particulier s’est peu à peu transformé en un problème crucial pour les responsables politiques et sociaux. Un problème qui a justifié la mise en place de différents plans d’action, de politiques locales ou de grande envergure, sans que cette impression de "ville à deux vitesses" ne soit effacée.</div>
</div>
C’est pourquoi aujourd’hui David Leyval a décidé de consacrer une étude à cette forme urbaine, à la fois sociale et spatiale. Son organisation, son utilité, les attentes auxquelles elle répond bien sûr, mais aussi l’avenir que lui prêtent tous ceux qui s’engagent à repenser l’espace urbain. Architectes, philosophes, sociologues débattent, aujourd’hui, de l’orientation qu’il faut donner à la banlieue pour qu’enfin elle ne soit plus un "non-lieu" synonyme de chaos social. Car l’enjeu est peut-être aujourd’hui de penser la ville différemment, avant d’agir, pour que ce mal des banlieues, qui explose de façon chronique, soit la base d’une nouvelle réflexion sur le développement urbain.</div>

This paper describes the dramatic changes in the size of the world’s urban population and of its largest cities over the last 100 years. This includes the almost tenfold increase in the average size of the world’s 100 largest cities between 1900 and 2000. It also describes the changing distribution of cities between regions. In 1900, Europe had more than half the world’s 100 largest cities, now it has only 10. In 1900, Asia had 22 of the world’s 100 largest cities; now it has nearly half of them. But the paper also explains how and why the world is actually less urbanized and less dominated by large cities than expected and questions whether rapid urbanization will continue in Africa. The long-term trends in urban change in each region are discussed, as are the changes in the economic, social and political drivers – for instance the political changes associated with the ending of colonial empires and the achievement of independence and the economic changes associated with globalization. Today, the main driver of urban change is the geography of where profit-seeking enterprises choose to concentrate (or to avoid). This can be seen in the how the world’s largest economies have a high concentration of the world’s urban population and its largest cities. Also in how increases in levels of urbanization for most low- and middle-income nations over the last 50 years track increases in the proportion of GDP generated by industry and services and the proportion of the labour force working in these sectors.</div>

This book moves beyond superficial generalizations about Cairo as a chaotic metropolis in the developing world into an analysis of the ways the city’s eighteen million inhabitants have, in the face of a largely neglectful government, built and shaped their own city. Using a wealth of recent studies on Greater Cairo and a deep reading of informal urban processes, the city and its recent history are portrayed and mapped: the huge, spontaneous neighborhoods; housing; traffic and transport; city government; and its people and their enterprises. The book argues that understanding a city such as Cairo is not a daunting task as long as pre-conceived notions are discarded and care is taken to apprehend available information and to assess it with a critical eye. In the case of Cairo, this approach leads to a conclusion that the city can be considered a kind of success story, in spite of everything.</div>

En 2010, la Communauté urbaine de Bordeaux (CUB) lançait un appel à projets pour une construction – rapide – de 50 000 logements le long des axes de transports collectifs, et notamment le tramway. Le défi est de taille et la question du logement urgente. Face à une croissance démographique et un étalement urbain importants, les habitants de la CUB se sont installés toujours plus loin d'un centre aux loyers en augmentation, avec des trajets domicile-travail rallongés et un tissu urbain en déséquilibre.<br />

Cinq équipes d'urbanistes sélectionnées ont déterminé quinze lieux "pilotes" sur l'ensemble de l'agglomération et proposé des exemples de densification, d'habitat différent, moins cher, constructible rapidement et modulable autour de la ville existante.<br />

Les éditions Archibooks ouvrent leurs pages à ce chantier de grande ampleur. Delphine Désveaux, journaliste spécialisée en architecture et auteur de nombreux ouvrages chez Archibooks, a réalisé une enquête sur l'opération et a interviewé les personnalités associées au projet : équipes d'urbanistes, élus... This article reviews uses of the term ‘metropolis’ to denote cities of a distinctive character, principally from the first to the late twentieth century A.D. ‘Metropolis’ is a ‘significant word’ with special resonance and power. Urban historians will profit from giving its uses careful attention. Those uses reveal, in particular contexts, ideas and ambitions concerning the status, authority and identity of both cities and peoples. They are often vague, rhetorical or boosterish, but just as often their precision adds to our understanding of contemporary thought. Often the term relates to a concern with the past or the future, or to senses of transience or regret. Equally significant are those cases where important cities were not described as metropolises, although occasionally modern historians have come to believe mistakenly that they were. Phases in the use of the term can be identified, especially in the nineteenth and early twentieth century when London became an influential model. In recent decades social scientists and bureaucrats have abused the term, but in some contexts ‘metropolis’ still has cultural and political power.</div>

Pendant les Trente Glorieuses, elles ont à la fois capté l’exode rural et participé au développement industriel ainsi qu’à la modernisation économique et sociale de notre pays. Elles occupent aujourd’hui une place charnière dans les nouvelles stratégies migratoires et résidentielles et sont particulièrement confrontées au phénomène de la périurbanisation.<br />

Ces évolutions ont été analysées par un groupe de travail mis en place fin 2004 et animé par la Délégation interministérielle à l’aménagement et à la compétitivité des territoires en collaboration avec la Fédération nationale des villes moyennes et avec la participation de l’Assemblée des communautés de France.</div>

Le rapport issu de ces travaux marque l’aboutissement de cette phase de réflexion commune et le commencement d’une nouvelle étape d’action. Intitulé "Les villes moyennes françaises, enjeux et perspectives" il est publié par la DIACT dans sa collection "Travaux" éditée par la Documentation française. Il dresse un diagnostic et établit une hiérarchisation des enjeux puis définit les axes prioritaires pour l’action publique en faveur des villes moyennes</div>
