</text>

<text>The spatial assimilation of ethnic minority groups based on ancestry data is an important issue in a major immigrant receiving, multicultural society like Australia. Using a new approach focusing on degree of ethnic ancestry group and host society mixing, we find levels of spatial assimilation in five metropolitan and three major industrial cities consistent with the concept of segmented assimilation based on time of arrival in Australia, refugee or skilled entry status, and opportunities for entry into the workforce dependent on national and local economic, not social circumstances. Evidence of the spatial assimilation of ethnic minorities who arrived in different periods suggests that the presence of enclaves is a temporary phenomenon, more so for skilled immigrants, less so for refugees. </text>

Cities, with their rising populations and complex configurations, have become key symbols of a fast-changing modernity. This timely collection gathers together various urban writings from a range of relevant disciplines, including architecture, geography, sociology, visual art, ethnography and psychoanalysis. Its focus, however, is performance. Underscoring the importance of the field, it shows how performance functions as a dynamic, interdisciplinary mechanism which is central not only to understanding the multiplicity of urban living but also to the way the identities of cities are shaped.

Gathering together key writings on the city and performance by authors ranging from Walter Benjamin to Tim Etchells to Carl Lavery, the reader can be navigated in any number of ways. Supported by extensive introductory material, it will be essential and evocative reading for anyone interested in making connections between performance and urban life.

The Cities Seminar meets monthly during the academic year, and features a combination of guest speakers and focused group readings and discussions on a rich variety of urban topics.

The seminar has two main aims: to identify and think through the implications of new (or newly recognized) urban forms in the era of globalization, and to address new concepts and paradigms in urban theory.

- How are cities - and city life - changing in response to developments such as globalization, transnational migration, new media culture, and environmental engineering?

- How does cultural production - ranging from literature and the visual arts to architecture and design - inform or contribute to those changes? What value do critical concepts such as the cosmopolitan, the global, the exurban, and the postmetropolitan have in current debates about cities?

- What new concepts and categories do we need to address emergent urban scenes and new formations of urban identity?

Engaging with such questions, the Cities Seminar aims to stimulate open discussion, exchange, and debate on key urban topics within the humanities and beyond.

Hugh Campbell is Professor of Architecture at University College Dublin.
