En premier lieu, il s'agit de celle, construite et officielle, de l'université républicaine : par delà l'Université impériale, il s'agit de renouer avec l'histoire prestigieuse de l'université médiévale, avec les fastes du collège de Robert de Sorbon : cette mise en scène mémorielle se manifeste dans le décor, mais aussi dans les textes et dans les vestiges archéologiques.&lt;br /&gt;Au XXe siècle, la Sorbonne est le lieu d'une autre mémoire : étudiante, universitaire, souvent ancrée à gauche, elle connait son heure de gloire en mai 1968. Depuis lors, récits et livres d'histoire racontent cette nouvelle geste sorbonienne.</text>

                <text>Cet article présente les premiers résultats d'une enquête ethnosociologique qui, à partir de l'examen de processus de réaffectation non industrielle d'anciens sites industriels de Lorraine et de Franche-Comté, s'intéresse à l'évolution, durant ces trente dernières années, du traitement culturel des résidus de la seconde industrialisation et participe à la réflexion actuelle sur les nouvelles formes de l'action culturelle et artistique qui se sont développés dans les espaces vacants (friches industrielles ou marchandes, hôpitaux, casernes, etc.), autrement dit les friches, fabriques, squats et autres « lieux intermédiaires », selon la dénomination en cours du Ministère de la culture. Il apparaît que celles-ci mettent en cause, ou du moins « travaillent » la distinction instituée entre le patrimoine et l'action culturelle, en s'inscrivant dans la perspective plus large du développement local. Dans quelle mesure la réaffectation induite de manière singulière, projet par projet, ne constitue-t-elle pas une alternative à l'option « lieu de mémoire », n'est-elle pas une manière d'assurer, par la continuité et le renouvellement du lieu, la permanence d'un principe d'indexation des personnes, d'ajustement d'un collectif et d'un territoire ? Si on confronte ce questionnement aux évolutions conjointes des politiques patrimoniales et de l'aménagement du territoire de la fin du XXe siècle, on peut être frappé par la proximité de certaines expériences du type « friche » avec la perspective écomuséale inaugurée, il y a maintenant trente ans, par l'expérience du Creusot ; proximité lisible en particulier dans la revendication d'un travail non pas en direction d'un public mais avec des habitants ou une population. De là l'hypothèse qu'avec ces nouveaux « espaces », on est peut-être en présence d'une forme de recomposition de l'utopie écomuséale. Là se rejouerait la lutte contre l'idéologie de la démocratisation culturelle.</text>

                <text>Depuis plus d'une vingtaine d'années, l'art officiel du XIXe siècle a fait l'objet d'une spectaculaire réhabilitation. Parmi les productions artistiques les plus délaissées puis les plus convoitées par les chercheurs, la décoration des édifices publics occupe une bonne place. Elle a suscité une grande abondance de travaux, tant en histoire qu'en histoire de l'art. Des expositions ont présenté les fonds les plus importants, des monographies ont consacré la valeur d'artistes injustement oubliés, tandis que les thèmes développés dans ces peintures sont devenus un point de passage obligé des analyses historiographiques ou iconographiques. Les discours centrés sur les œuvres et les discours développés à partir des œuvres, sans s'opposer, se construisent souvent dans l'ignorance mutuelle. Pour replacer une peinture dans le cheminement personnel de son créateur, on néglige parfois de la rapprocher d'autres toiles ou de textes ressortissant au même thème. Inversement, l'œuvre peut être utilisée comme simple illustration du récit historique, au mépris de sa genèse particulière et au risque de contresens. C'est entre ces deux approches qu'il faut essayer de placer l'analyse des peintures commandées pour les établissements d'enseignement supérieur. Le processus de commande publique offre l'avantage de susciter un grand nombre de documents écrits qui aident à comprendre la naissance de chaque œuvre. Une grande diversité apparaît, qui peut aider à orienter l'étude de l'œuvre dans la direction la plus pertinente. Tantôt c'est la liberté de choix de l'artiste qui semble prédominante, et l'œuvre trouve alors naturellement sa place dans la carrière de l'homme. Tantôt c'est l'influence des destinataires qui est prépondérante, et la peinture peut être insérée dans une analyse orientée vers l'histoire de l'institution ou l'ethnologie du groupe. Enfin, certains cas complexes permettent de combiner ces différentes approches et d'enrichir la connaissance du processus de commande lui-même : histoire de l'art et histoire administrative sont alors intimement mêlées.&lt;br /&gt;Les cas plus particulièrement étudiés ici sont la décoration de la salle des actes de la Faculté de Droit par Ménard, la commande à Dupain de L'Apothéose de l'Ecole Polytechnique et les travaux de décoration du vestibule de l'Ecole de Pharmacie par Besnard et Hirsch.</text>

Mais les sciences de la ville qui se sont constituées au XXe siècle ont cherché à intégrer le propos descriptif à des formulations théoriques tentant de rendre compte des agglomérations comme modèle, ou comme système, correspondant à un certain type d'espace. &lt;br /&gt;Tout d'abord définie par opposition au rural par l'ensemble des auteurs, cette distinction s'est peu à peu révélée obsolète au fur et à mesure que les frontières réelles et virtuelles entre les espaces urbains et ruraux s'effaçaient. Cette mutation fondamentale a fait l'objet de nombreuses conceptualisations, lesquelles permettent de mieux appréhender les dynamiques spatiales aujourd'hui.</text>

                <text>Engagé dans une exploration de l'« espace de la mémoire de la "Lorraine sidérurgique"», je m'intéresse ici aux formes « sensibles » de l'activité patrimoniale en situation de perte consistant en particulier dans une pratique photographique « amateur » remarquablement constante tout au long du processus de d'effacement de la sidérurgie. À partir de l'examen du parcours de ces amateurs attachés à fixer la perte, ainsi que d'un corpus d'ouvrages de témoignage photographique, soulignant la particularité de cette pratique au regard de la situation, je propose une réflexion sur l'acte photographique comme geste patrimonial élémentaire. « Image-acte », la photographie apparaît au croisement de la perte et de la dette et se déploie sous les signes conjoints de la trace et de la reconnaissance. Dans le cadre limité de cet article, il m'importe plus précisément de saisir sa signification politique dans l'espace de la mémoire de la « Lorraine sidérurgique », de manière à éprouver l'hypothèse que je formule de sa présence massive : celle d'un travail par défaut sur la trace de ce qui a été, sur l'empreinte de ce qui a marqué et qui « tient lieu d'absence ». La photographie vient suppléer, ou plutôt résister à l'inéluctable de la perte en produisant des traces sensibles du monde perdu : ainsi un geste esthétique lui redonne une visibilité, autrement dit vient lui restituer une « évidence », de sorte qu'il « (re)tombe sous le sens ».</text>
