                <text>

                <text>

<text>
Leading intellectuals reimagine the city as a site of ceaseless change and motion.

The metropolis is a site of endless making and unmaking. Restless Cities celebrates the ceaselessly inventive character of the metropolitan city from the nineteenth century to the present, in an original and idiosyncratic attempt to recapture its rhythms. In its explorations of phenomena like commuting, convalescing, dreaming, lodging, recycling and sickening in the city, this rich, wide-ranging book traces the patterns that have defined the individual in everyday urban life.
Abstract from the publisher :

While climate change, sustainable architecture, and green technologies have become increasingly topical, issues surrounding the sustainability of the city are much less developed. The premise of the book is that an ecological approach is urgently needed both as a remedial device for the contemporary city and an organizing principle for new cities. “Ecological Urbanism” approaches the city without any one set of instruments and with a worldview that is fluid in scale and disciplinary approach. Design provides the synthetic key to connect ecology with an urbanism that is not in contradiction with its environment. The book brings together design practitioners and theorists, economists, engineers, artists, policy makers, environmental scientists, and public health specialists, with the goal of reaching a more robust understanding of ecological urbanism and what it might be in the future.

With contributions by Homi Bhabha, Stefano Boeri, Chuck Hoberman, Rem Koolhaas, Sanford Kwinter, Bruno Latour, Nina-Marie Lister, Mohsen Mostafavi, Matthias Schuler, Sissel Tolaas, Charles Waldheim, among others.

This edited volume interrogates the "global cities" literature, which views the city as a shimmering, financial "global network." Through a historical-ethnographic exploration of inter-ethnic relations in the "other global" cities of Cairo, Beirut, Istanbul, Bukhara, Lhasa, Delhi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo, the well-known contributors highlight cartographies of the Other Global City. The volume contends that thinking about the city in the longue duree and as part of a topography of interconnected regions contests both imperial and nationalist ways of reading cities that have occasioned the many and particularly violent territorial partitions in Asia and the world.

Contents :

Shail Mayaram - Introduction: Re-Reading Global Cities: Topographies of an Alternative Cosmopolitanism in Asia
Engin F.                 <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

Departing from a survey on the post-modern landscapes of tourism, this book explores the transformations the city has undergone and the way it has become a simulacrum offered to tourists, spectacularised with the aim of increasing its capacity for attraction. The experiences dealt with in the papers of authors belonging to different disciplinary fields, emphasise the city’s tendencies to create "stage-set contexts" of the private type, be it historic quarters, theme parks or hypermarkets. Issues like aestheticisation, thematisation and genericity are dealt with, conceptual categories that highlight the weak resistance cities put up against the rules of the leisure industry and, more generally speaking, the consumer economy.

The book inquires into the capacity of the urban and territorial project to construct a perspective for a public dimension of space. This is linked with ethical action of the project involving an active relationship with places and a capacity to understand the dynamics of different urban populations. In this sense capacity for innovation and creativity can contribute to transforming "islands" of leisure into places of the city and consumers into citizens.

Contents :

Giovanni Maciocco - Places for Leisure. <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

Globalisation and a neo-liberal world order are impacting the global urban system, resulting in massive transformation of cities across the world. This transformation, which is currently the centre of focus among sociologists, will continue as more and more city spaces are occupied in the wake of globalization.

This book is a collection of essays written by some of the most famous theoreticians and academics in the area of urban studies on this transformation process of cities and its socio-economic ramifications.

These essays analyse the signs of intense spatial crisis in metropolises, revealing the contradictory processes of integration and segmentation that characterise the critical nature of global city space. Crisis of urban space in such cities, the book argues, is essentially related to their placement in the world city system and the limitations in their globalocal networks. Restructuring spaces also leads to differentiated and contradictory processes, the book reveals, since not all segments of the population are affected equally.The process benefits only parts of society and, therefore, only parts of the city space. This book shows how Centre and Periphery, reflect the differentiation between global society and segmented localities, how these stand spatially anchored, creating a background of intense urban conflicts.

This volume explores and exposes a divided framework in which globalisation operates towards fragmentation and polarization; debunking the myth of homogenisation. The essays reveal that cities and regions across the world get incorporated into this system, exhibiting characteristics that are more diverse and complex than ever before especially due to the increasingly contradictory relationship with their local resource and cultural base.

Contents :

Introduction: Transformative Cities in the New Global Order - Swapna Banerjee-Guha
The Right to the City: From Capital Surplus to Accumulation by Dispossession - David Harvey
The Global City: Strategic Site, New Frontier - Saskia Sassen
Manufacturing Neoliberalism: Lifestyling Indian Urbanity - Solomon Benjamin
Global Capital, Neo-Liberal Politics and Terrains of Resistance in Vienna - Heinz Nissel
Globalisation and Transformation of Dhaka City - Nazrul Islam and Salma A Shafi
'Hi-Tech' Hyderabad and the Urban Poor: Reformed out of the System - Umesh Varma
Reconfiguring Power Relationships: Policies towards Urban Services in Mumbai - Marie-Helene Zerah
Urban Transport Projects in a Globalised Scenario - Darryl D'Monte
Urban Public Space and the Urban Poor - Sharit Bhowmik
Revisiting Accumulation by Dispossession: Neoliberalising Mumbai - Swapna Banerjee-Guha

Swapna Banerjee-Guha is Professor of Development Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher :

For decades, a succession of military regimes and democratic governments in Brazil sought to shape the future of their society through the manipulation of urban spaces. Planned cities were built that reflected the ideals of high modernism, and urban designers and planners created clean-cut minimalist spaces that reflected the hope for an idyllic future in a still-developing nation. But these cities were criticized as "utopian dreams" in a country plagued with the urban realities of rampant sprawl and the infamous slums known as favelas.

In this international collection of essays, architects, urban planners, and scholars assess the legacy of Brazilian urbanism to date. They evaluate the country's experiments with modernism and examine how Brazilian cities are regenerating themselves within a democratic political framework that meets market and social demands, and respects place, culture, and history.

Vicente del Rio is professor in the city and regional planning department at California Polytechnic State University.
William Siembieda is head of the city and regional planning department at California Polytechnic State University.

</text>
