                <text>My dissertation examines the city making process of Wuhan out of three different towns. The three towns, Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, located at the confluence of the Yangzi River and its largest tributary, the Han River, were divided by water and the imperial administration. In less than fifty years, the three towns disappeared, and in their place emerged Wuhan, the largest Chinese city in terms of its urban area. The urban integration was so successful that their separate pasts have been left out of current public memory. The goal of my study is to understand why and how Wuhan was made, and what the obsession with the city's big size can tell us about Chinese imagination and experience of modernity in the twentieth century. In answering these questions, the project is designed to cover three periods from late Qing, the republic, to the early PRC, and to trace modernizing efforts made by successive regimes to create "Great Wuhan." It focuses on five key historical periods--the late Qing reform, the urban self recovery after the 1911 revolution, the modernist planning from 1927-1936, Wuhan as a wartime capital in the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945), and the socialist urban reconstruction from 1949 to 1957. The study shows the 1911 revolution as a turning moment when a modern city was designed to depart from its imperial antecedent. It was Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of Republican China, who first proposed the idea of "Great Wuhan." Such a gigantic urban project shows that Sun was thinking "big." I argued that his way of thinking prevailed with the emergence of a strong scientific faith, which primarily placed upon young technologically trained officials and engineers later. Like Sun Yat-sen, they envisioned a total transformation of modern China through re-engineering urban society and infrastructure construction. This "big" vision of modernity--gigantic and centralized--was promoted by both Chinese Nationalists and Communists and ran across time and ideology in shaping contemporary urban landscape. I also argue that the creation of Wuhan had been closely tied to the nation-state building in the early twentieth century. Sun's idea of "Great Wuhan" didn't gain currency until the late 1920s when the Nationalist party that inherited Sun's mantle came to power. From then on, efforts to make "Great Wuhan" always intensified at moments of national crisis and political change, through which the state consolidated its power and gained control over local society. The rise of nationalism along the time also contributed the obsession with bigness that fueled the ambitious project of "Great Wuhan." It is under the CCP regime that the city of Wuhan was finally made. The socialist system and its strong nationalist movements established in the early years of PRC proved to be more effective in carrying out the mega city project.</text>

The study of the Portuguese immigration in France presents an efficient pattern for the knowledge of international migrations: about 800 000 people were involved in this movement, acting only some years, out of the States' control. <text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher:</b></div> &nbsp;</div> Phoenix, Arizona is one of America's fastest growing metropolitan regions. It is also its least sustainable one, sprawling over a thousand square miles, with a population of four and a half million, minimal rainfall, scorching heat, and an insatiable appetite for unrestrained growth and unrestricted property rights.<br /> <br /> In Bird on Fire, eminent social and cultural analyst Andrew Ross focuses on the prospects for sustainability in Phoenix--a city in the bull's eye of global warming--and also the obstacles that stand in the way. Most authors writing on sustainable cities look at places like Portland, Seattle, and New York that have excellent public transit systems and relatively high density. But Ross contends that if we can't change the game in fast-growing, low-density cities like Phoenix, the whole movement has a major problem. Drawing on interviews with 200 influential residents--from state legislators, urban planners, developers, and green business advocates to civil rights champions, energy lobbyists, solar entrepreneurs, and community activists--Ross argues that if Phoenix is ever to become sustainable, it will occur more through political and social change than through technological fixes. Ross explains how Arizona's increasingly xenophobic immigration laws, science-denying legislature, and growth-at-all-costs business ethic have perpetuated social injustice and environmental degradation. But he also highlights the positive changes happening in Phoenix, in particular the Gila River Indian Community's successful struggle to win back its water rights, potentially shifting resources away from new housing developments to producing healthy local food for the people of the Phoenix Basin. Ross argues that this victory may serve as a new model for how green democracy can work, redressing the claims of those who have been aggrieved in a way that creates long-term benefits for all.<br /> <br /> Bird on Fire offers a compelling take on one of the pressing issues of our time--finding pathways to sustainability at a time when governments are dismally failing their responsibility to address climate change.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Andrew Ross </b>is Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

I used to live in Washington DC, not far from a place I learned to call the &ldquo;U Street Corridor.&rdquo; I really had no idea why it was a &ldquo;corridor&rdquo; (most places in DC are just &ldquo;streets&rdquo;) or why a lot of folks seemed to make a big deal out if it. Don&rsquo;t get me wrong. It was nice. There are coffee shops, jazz clubs, and the place is full of beautiful late Victorian architecture. But I confess I really didn&rsquo;t understand what the &ldquo;U Street Corridor&rdquo; was.<br />
<br />
Having read Blair Ruble&lsquo;s terrific <a target="_blank" href="http://jhupbooks.press.jhu.edu/ecom/MasterServlet/GetItemDetailsHandler?iN=9780801898006&amp;qty=1&amp;source=2&amp;viewMode=3&amp;loggedIN=false&amp;JavaScript=y">Washington&rsquo;s U Street: A Biography</a> (Johns Hopkins UP/Woodrow Wilson Center Press, 2010), I can confidently say that now I get it. U Street was arguably the first urban area in the post-bellum United States in which African Americans formed a vital, sophisticated, wealthy, and identifiably modern &ldquo;negro&rdquo; (as they would have said) culture. Today we take it for granted that African Americans make a vital contribution to the cultural life (though not only that) of the United States. At the end of the Civil War, that wasn&rsquo;t so. The vast majority of Blacks were southern, rural, and poor. If they appeared on the stage of national culture (and they almost never did), it was through the devices of minstrels in black-face. As Ruble points out, all that changed on U Street in the early 20th century, the birthplace of modern African American culture. Now I know, and I&rsquo;m glad I do. Read the book, and you&rsquo;ll know too.</div>

In Bloomberg&rsquo;s New York, Julian Brash applies methods from anthropology, geography, and other social science disciplines to examine what that means. He describes the mayor&rsquo;s attitude toward governance as the Bloomberg Way&mdash;a philosophy that holds up the mayor as CEO, government as a private corporation, desirable residents and businesses as customers and clients, and the city itself as a product to be branded and marketed as a luxury good.<br /> <br /> Commonly represented as pragmatic and nonideological, the Bloomberg Way, Brash argues, is in fact an ambitious reformulation of neoliberal governance that advances specific class interests. He considers the implications of this in a blow-by-blow account of the debate over the Hudson Yards plan, which aimed to transform Manhattan&rsquo;s far west side into the city&rsquo;s next great high-end district. Bringing this plan to fruition proved surprisingly difficult as activists and entrenched interests pushed back against the Bloomberg administration, suggesting that despite Bloomberg&rsquo;s success in redrawing the rules of urban governance, older political arrangements&mdash;and opportunities for social justice&mdash;remain.<br /> <br /> <b>Julian Brash</b> is assistant professor of anthropology at Montclair State University.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

                <text>This thesis seeks to overcome the myopia of previous studies of urban renewal in Toronto through a historical approach to the interaction between state housing policy and community activism in the politics of urban renewal. First, it examines the continuities and discontinuities in the history of planning and social housing activity and activism in Toronto. In particular, the thesis examines the long history of community activism in Toronto, and how local residents resisted--sometimes successfully, most times not--the Haussmannization of inner-city Toronto. Vigorous community opposition to urban renewal, though only successful in the late 1960s was by no means a recent development in Toronto. Second, the thesis places the local politics of slum clearance and urban renewal schemes within the context of Toronto's chronic low-income housing shortage which conditioned how these programs played out and how Torontonians reacted to them in the ways they did. Third, and finally, it is a central contention of this thesis that the destruction of inner city neighbourhoods under the guise of renewal was due, in large part, to the way in which these neighbourhoods were portrayed in popular discourse. Thus, the thesis examines the idea of community as "contested terrain" in two different ways--physical and ideological. The battle for control over the renewal of Toronto's inner-city neighbourhoods concerned real spatial sites, the conditions of many of which were harmful to the physical and material interests of their residents. As a result, planners, politicians, and residents of inner-city Toronto neighbourhoods struggled daily to prevent further decay of individual and collective residential environments. Nonetheless, the primary battle waged over the control of inner-city neighbourhoods was ideological. Planners, politicians, social housing activists, the popular media, community activists, and inner-city residents aft struggled over the definition of inner-city neighbourhoods as "slums." All too often Toronto's working class neighbourhoods were viewed through the lens of the "Victorian slum" and universally portrayed as landscapes of disease, despair, and degeneracy--both physically and morally. The inability of Torontonians to move beyond a kind of "Victorian environmentalism" to comprehend the diverse realities of inner-city neighbourhoods led to the physical and social destruction of much of working-class Toronto. Ironically, wiping these "cancerous blots" from the face of the city through massive urban renewal and public housing projects was the most costly solution of all and undermined the nation's entire urban housing program. Indeed, the fundamental contradictions between the discourse and the reality of poor housing districts were vital to the struggle of politicalhegemonies that eventually brought slum clearance and urban renewal schemes to a halt by 1970.</text>
