</text>

The connections between built environment and solar radiation vary throughout history. This paper proposes a historical overview of this evolution through architectural and urban theories, from the middle of the nineteenth century. The panorama thus displayed provides a basis for discussing the solar issue in sustainable city. This question is not only technical or economic, as it is most often discussed face to the energetic emergency, but it is also social and cultural. We develop the idea of a solar disenchantment, which is demonstrated by an increased technicisation, and privatization of our relationship to radiation. </text>

The problematic term madinah fundamentally indicates a phenomenon of building, dwelling, and urban settlement patterns that evolved after the 7th century CE in the Maghrib (North Africa) and al-Andalusia (Spain). Madinah involves multiple contexts that have socio-religious functions and symbolic connotations related to the faith and practice of Islam, and can be viewed in terms of a number of critiques such as everyday lives, boundaries, utopias, and dystopias. The book considers Foucault&rsquo;s power/knowledge matrix as it applies to an erudite cadre of scholars and legal judgments in the realm of architecture and urbanism. It acknowledges the specificity of power/knowledge insofar as it provides a dominant framework to tackle property rights, custom, noise, privacy, and a host of other subjects. Scholars of urban studies, religion, history, and geography will greatly benefit from this vivid analysis of the relevance of the juridico-discursive practice of Maliki Law in a set of productive or formative discourses in the Islamic city.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Akel Isma'il Kahera</b> is professor of architecture and community planning at Prairie View A&amp; M University and Director of the Texas Institute for the Preservation of History and Culture.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

<text>'London Labour and the London Poor' (1861-62) is one of England's most remarkable nineteenth-century urban documents. Henry Mayhew, journalist, playwright and novelist, poured the best of his life's work into 'London Labour', and the earlier 'Morning Chronicle' newspaper articles (1849-51) on which it was largely based. 'London Labour' encapsulates his mature thought and energy, and public attention, and at its most concentrated, it encapsulates a single intellectual pattern, the examination of Victorian London's labouring poor seen through the communication and cultural prism of vernacular languages. And yet 'London Labour' remains strangely unrecognized even though there is a substantial body of scholarship focused on Mayhew's work, which I have examined. The challenge is to establish once again the theoretical power of Mayhew's vision of a Victorian society focused on urban relationships in the city. 'Reading Victorian London: Henry Mayhew' (1812-1887) and 'London Labour and the London Poor' (1861-62) considers how Victorian London was shaped; London's spatial organization within the limitations imposed by these structural determinations; and the patterning of group and class formations within this spatial domain. The communication issues of language--the increasingly secondary roles of the vernacular, the rise of modern reading communities, and the destruction or censorship of certain genres--are also examined. The pivotal issues of folk culture, the labouring poor described as wandering tribes in the midst of Victorian civilization, are also examined as well as the significance of nineteenth-century travel literature for understanding these important issues.

Lastly, the literary issues surrounding 'London Labour' itself are also examined through the Menippean satire, which accounts for Mayhew's perplexing and sometimes violent juxtapositions of topics, genres, and attitudes. For Mayhew combined his philosophical and practical inquiries into the study of the street-folk's life, their entertainment, humour, and vernacular languages, Victorian socio-cultural history, adventure stories and travel literature, are combined in one literary genre, called the Menippean satire. I conclude that there is the need for a more adequate theory of modern cities such as Victorian London, its history and cultures, which could be widened if scholars and journalists seriously included Mayhew's 'London Labour and the London Poor' in their discussions.</text>

<text>This study examines the impact of real estate brokers on the price of residential properties sold in 2005 in twelve French cities. The results indicate that brokers increase the prices of properties they sell even though they appear to have heterogeneous behaviours across cities. The impact of brokers also varies by property size and age of clients. One and two room apartments have higher selling prices when sold through brokers. Buyers in their thirties and forties who seek the assistance of brokers pay more for their homes whereas older sellers obtain higher prices from broker intermediation.</text>

<text>Over more than ten years, France has experienced a twofold increase of residential housing prices. This was largely fuelled by the credit conditions and a general fear of the future. A strong negative correlation between initial price level and its increase leads to a massive trend of spatial homogenization of the prices. Such a tendency is fairly vigorous in the metropolitan area of Marseille, and particularly in its extremely poor and long devaluated centre, where prices have risen by over 200% since the mid-1990s. This real estate market evolution is emblematic of Neil Smith’s rent gap hypothesis. Yet, a detailed survey of spatial differentials of price increase shows that contiguous central neighbourhoods with similar price levels before the recent tremendous upsurge are affected by appreciably different price rises. Therefore, this unequal price evolution cannot be understood without a clearer analysis on the ‘potential land value’ than provided by Smith’s model. In the context of such housing price increase and uncertainty, prices transmit noisy signals to investors. Thus, State involvement, as in one of the most important operations of urban redevelopment nationwide (Euroméditerranée), appears as a guarantee for investors and also accounts for the spatial differentials of price growth rates. </text>

<text>This research refers to an ongoing investigation related to an urban industrial port area which is located on the south bank of the estuary of the Río de la Plata, 10 km from the capital city of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. From Territories, Actors and Governance Team (TAG), a useful academic contribution to institutions and social actors involved in the Territories and places described. We will try to offer, therefore, some contributions in line with the methods outlined in the heart of the Possible Territories Network, Territoring Method, related to investigation and intervention. Taking as starting point a conceptual territorial base though not exclusive, we complement this view with input and tools from social, economic, environmental disciplines, among others. In this research the recent territorial transformations (ordering of uses and functions, land use, investments, etc.) are analized in relation to the port jurisdiction of La Plata. Particularly, we will study the logic displayed by social, political, economic actors and their patterns of occupation and ownership of the space. (Santos, M: 1996, 2000) (Karol, J: 2004).The resulting dispute over the use and appropriation of space between different activities (productive and unproductive) accentuate the complex overlapping of jurisdictions and agencies with potential competition authority. In this port area there are long-standing conflicts due to the complex network of actors with different interests in space...</text>
