Inspired by the cultural histories of Walter Benjamin and Wolfgang Schivelbusch, Expositions explores the spatial and cultural logic of Haussmann's sweeping Paris boulevards, classic novels by Balzac and Zola, the Bon March&eacute; department store, and the poetry of Baudelaire.</div> &nbsp;</div> Inspired by the cultural history of Walter Benjamin, Hamon investigates the phenomenon of the <i>Exposition universelle</i>, with its spectacular public spaces. He relates how the entire urban landscape became a stage while the culture of the image attained ever greater currency in the daily experience of advertising, fashion, photography, and illustration. Masterfully interweaving cultural, architectural, and literary history with semiotic and rhetorical analysis (<i>exposition </i>is also the foundation of novelistic practice), Hamon offers a virtuoso study of a key moment in the genesis of cultural modernity. His <i>Expositions </i>will attract readers in literature, architecture, history, and cultural and urban studies.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Philippe Hamon </b>is Professor Emeritus at the University of the New Sorbonne (Paris III) and a specialist in literary theory.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

<text>Five Geographical Surveys of the Japanese Demography.

Although the Japanese demography has aroused worrying or excessive comments among Western observers, its evolution is largely similar to those usually known in the World, as we can see through five cases. The demographic transition took place quite early, almost achieved during the 1920's, and the post-war baby boom did not challenge it. Although a stabilization was engaged during the 1970's, a rural depopulation started again during the 1980' s towards the Megalopolis and especially the Great Tokyo. Today the ageing of the Japanese population is not a stricto sensu demographic problem but a social and geographical one. Because of a need of workforce in the Megalopolis and of the attraction of the Japan's eldorado myth in Asia, an immigration of Asians is growing in Japan. Despite stereotypes, the suicide rate in Japan is not too high, and it concerns first the deep rural areas.</text>

<text>Local policies and distribution of the Elderly: The case of Angers

In Angers, a medium size city of Western France, the 1975 and 1990 censuses point out a great mobility of old people (over 75 years). Now, they rather aggregate in the city inner area. As a consequence, the central district gets proportionnally more populated with younger people. These changes in the age structure arise from three main processes: in the central district real estate rehabilitation and restoration add to the sortings out of old people; in the less coveted inner area, the greater number of elderly people results from the development of retirement homes and from the local public policy of keeping elderly citizens at home. </text>

In 2007, Urban Age undertook a research programme in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore followed by the Urban Age India Conference in Mumbai, to understand and assess how these cities are responding to the challenges of growth, and to compare these approaches to those adopted in other cities throughout the world.<br /> <br /> India's cities are at the forefront of a global shift to an urban society. Assessing various responses to the challenges of dramatic urban growth, Integrated City Making compares government, planning and transport in four Indian cities to those adopted in London, New York, Berlin and Johannesburg.<br /> <br /> The four Indian cities have a population of 35 million people (78 million including wider metropolitan regions and Delhi's National Capital Region), and an economy valued at $360 billion within their agglomerations.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Contents:</b></div> &nbsp;</div> 1. </text>

<text>Insularity, a paradoxical metaphor for a continental space, seems the most adequate concept to evoke a deep imbalance of French Guyana, whereas the centre-periphery interactions are found at each scale (international, national and regional). The demographic hyper-concentration and focussing of economic activities on three bulk-headed poles – Cayenne, Kourou, Saint-Laurent – is characteristic of a space in crisis. Migratory movements both reinforce and embrace the spatial disequilibria. Given their low drai- résinage capacity, these centralities do not have a very polarizing effect within departmental space. The concept of space crisis is read as much in the hyper-concentration of the settlement within the littoral space overdeveloped as in the weakness of the internal movements of population and the interpolarized exchanges. Analysis of internal mobility based on changes of residence and residence-work commuting, as well as on international migration, enables a better understanding of the dynamics of exchanges. Conversely, their gravitational capacities find an echo outside the departmental surface, on national and international scales. The different types of international migration (political, economic, of competences) reveal the extraversion and the dependency of this overseas French territory. </text>
