This article presents material collected through urban sociological research carried out by a Franco-hellenic collaboration between 1986 and 1992 (CNRS, Greek EKKE and université de Paris X-Nanterre). The empirical survey was spread over four district in Piraeus, which are three quarters working class and one quarter petty bourgeois, using a representative sample of 800 individuals (50% women) between the ages of 20 and 59. This investigation, done by questionnaire, aimed to collect data concerning the family, socio-professional mobility and employment. The analysis presented here focuses on two aspects: on the one hand, the types of relations between generations inside the family and, on the other hand, the types of sociabilities which develop in the community. It reveals a distinct gap between the practices and attitudes of original inhabitants of Piraeus and those of immigrants from the “interior” who, after years of settling in the town, maintain greater connections with their village of origin than with their district of adoption. Using an analytical framework of governmentality, supplemented by insights from postcolonial studies and political ecology, the thesis explains the highly unequal patterns of water access in Jakarta as the product of (post)colonial governmentalities, whose relations of power are expressed not only through discursive categories and socio-economic relations, but also through material infrastructures and urban spaces. The thesis presents material from the colonial archives, Jakarta’s municipal archives, and the publications of international development agencies and engineering consultancy firms. This is combined with primary data derived from interviews, questionnaires, and participant observation of the implementation of current pro-poor water supply projects in Jakarta. This data is used to document how water supply is implicated in the discursive and material production of the city and its citizens, and to challenge conventional developmentalist and academic analyses of water supply access. Specifically, a conceptual triad of water, space, and populations – produced through, but also productive of government rationalities – is used to explain two apparent paradoxes: (1) the fragmentation of access in Jakarta despite a century of concerted attempts to develop a centralized system; and (2) the preferences of lower-income households for non-networked water supply, despite its higher cost per unit volume. This analysis hinges on an elucidation of the relationships between urban governance and urban infrastructure, which documents the interrelated process of differentiation of types of water supply, water use practices, populations, and urban spaces from the colonial period to the present. This, in turn, is used to explain the barriers being encountered in current pro-poor water supply development projects in Jakarta. The thesis thus makes a contribution to current academic debates over the "colonial present". The contribution is both theoretical – in the emphasis placed upon the materiality of governmentality – and empirical. Finally, the thesis also makes a contribution to the urban and development studies literatures through its reinterpretation of the urban "water crisis". The creation of diasporas has been one result of such movements of people. Increasingly in recent years emigrants have been returning to their homelands for holidays and other visits, and this form of tourism has grown significantly. The paper discusses the nature of such tourism, its links to VFR tourism, and the specific characteristics that differentiate it from the latter. Case studies of two elements of the Lebanese emigrant population are discussed to throw additional light on the motivations and behaviour of emigrants returning to their homeland in the context of tourism. Fragmentation or co-ordination? ‘Relevance of Metropolitan Government’ explores this dilemma through a detailed study of two cities in Latin America: Caracas in Venezuela, and Monterrey in Mexico. The book also introduces a method to evaluate co-ordination arrangements and gives recommendations to deal with the double question of democracy and performance faced by cities in an integrated world. In the first chapters the book sets up a theoretical framework to discuss issues of metropolitan government in the case studies Caracas and Monterrey. Chapter 2 deals with the insertion of the study within the contemporary debates about metropolitan government and metropolitan governance. In this chapter the choice for the analysis methods and the case studies is made clear. Chapter 3 deals with the specific profiles of Caracas and Monterrey, which are presented as representative cases of capital cities and export cities in Latin America. Chapter 4 through 7 review the co-ordination levels of a pair of metropolitan functions (physical planning and urban public transport) in these cities. This part of the study is based on empirical data, ranging form interviews and document analysis made in place in these Latin American cities. Chapter 4 and 5 are dedicated to Caracas and chapters 6 and 7 to Monterrey. On chapter 8 conclusions of the study are drawn in regard to the basic statements and research made of the first part of the book. The main findings are, the existence and resilience of good co-ordination efforts in both of the case studies, the need for more political support for metropolitan government implementation and the existence of sensible bottlenecks—mainly political—in the establishment or progress of government reform. This article deals with the territorial constructions emerging from the religious revival within the Jewish diaspora, and the resulting evolution of identity. In particular, we study the development of orthodox movements in the north-east districts of Paris. The regrouping of orthodox Jews observed is not a resurgence of traditional ghettos, nor does it resemble the Hassidic districts in the United States. These religious districts, however, appear similar at the level of interactions and relations, which contribute to the redefinition of urban identities, as well as diasporic identities. Based on more than two years of ethnographic fieldwork among five thousand working-class families in the neighborhood of al-Zawyia al-Hamra, this study explores how these displaced residents have dealt with the stigma of public housing, the loss of their established community networks, and the diversity of the population in the new location. Until now, few anthropologists have delivered detailed case studies on this recent phenomenon. Ghannam fills this gap in scholarship with an illuminating analysis of urban engineering of populations in Cairo. Drawing on theories of practice, the study traces the various tactics and strategies employed by members of the relocated group to appropriate and transform the state's understanding of &quot;modernity&quot; and hegemonic construction of space. Informed by recent theories of globalization, Ghannam also shows how the growing importance of religious identity is but one of many contradictory ways that global trajectories mold the identities of the relocated residents.
