<text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> <br /> For most of the latter half of the twentieth century, Roppongi was an enormously popular nightclub district that stood out from the other pleasure quarters of Tokyo for its mix of international entertainment and people. It was where Japanese and foreigners went to meet and play. With the crash of Japan&rsquo;s bubble economy in the 1990s, however, the neighborhood declined, and it now has a reputation as perhaps Tokyo&rsquo;s most dangerous district&mdash;a hotbed of illegal narcotics, prostitution, and other crimes. Its concentration of &ldquo;bad foreigners,&rdquo; many from China, Russia and Eastern Europe, West Africa, and Southeast Asia is thought to be the source of the trouble.<br /> <br /> Roman Adrian Cybriwsky examines how Roppongi&rsquo;s nighttime economy is now under siege by both heavy-handed police action and the conservative Japanese &ldquo;construction state,&rdquo; an alliance of large private builders and political interests with broad discretion to redevelop Tokyo. The construction state sees an opportunity to turn prime real estate into high-end residential and retail projects that will &ldquo;clean up&rdquo; the area and make Tokyo more competitive with Shanghai and other rising business centers in Asia.<br /> <br /> Roppongi Crossing is a revealing ethnography of what is arguably the most dynamic district in one of the world&rsquo;s most dynamic cities. Based on extensive fieldwork, it looks at the interplay between the neighborhood&rsquo;s nighttime rhythms; its emerging daytime economy of office towers and shopping malls; Japan&rsquo;s ongoing internationalization and changing ethnic mix; and Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown, the massive new construction projects now looming over the old playground.</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Roman Adrian Cybriwsky </b>is Professor of Geography and Urban Studies and Director of Asian Studies at Temple University.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

&nbsp;</div>

                <text>Si l'automobilisme n'avait été porteur que d'une culture élitaire, son acceptation profonde par les sociétés métropolitaines occidentales n'aurait pas été aussi complète. Confronté à ce phénomène fondamentalement inclusif, l'historien du social est amené à prendre en considération la réelle demande d'automobile qui s'est fait jour à Paris au cours des années 1950-1960. Dans la France des « Trente Glorieuses », la signification de la motorisation de masse témoigne du processus de démocratisation connu par un bien de consommation toujours connoté socialement mais précisément en passe de perdre son caractère de marqueur social. L'évolution du statut de l'objet automobile mérite donc de retenir l'attention, ainsi que les métamorphoses de l'accessibilité à la ville centre et de son appropriation, profondément transformées par le mode de déplacement individuel motorisé. </text>

                <text>If automobilism had been the bearer only of an elite culture, it would not have experienced such complete acceptance in western metropolitan societies. Faced with this fundamentally inclusive phenomenon, the social historian must consider the strong demand for cars seen in Paris over the years from 1950 to 1960. In the France of the “Trente Glorieuses” (1945-1975), the phenomenon of mass motorisation provides evidence of the process of democratisation experienced by a consumer good retaining social significance yet in the process of losing its role as marker of social class. The evolution of the status of the automobile thus merits attention, as do the metamorphoses of the accessibility of the city centre and of its appropriation, which were profoundly altered by the motorised means of personal transportation. </text>

              <elementText elementTextId="195252">
                <text>This is a study of an event: an abortive royalist insurrection in the city of Nîmes in June 1790 and its aftermath - a series of royalist revolts centred upon the commune of Berrias in the department of the Ardèche in 1790, 1791 and 1792. The thesis is divided into four parts, each designed to contribute to an explanation of what made these events possible. Part I is a discussion of the composition and ideological assumptions of royalism in the South-East of France. Part II consists of an examination of the social and economic structure of Nimes in the eighteenth century. Part III is a study of the relationship between Nimes and its hinterland as it was organised through the production of silk. Part IV deals with the manner in which the form of this town-country relationship intersected with tensions and conflicts within the city itself in the later eighteenth century. It is argued from this analysis that it is impossible to explain royalism in unilateral terms. Royalism was the product of a developing social process; it cannot therefore be deduced from the divisions which it contributed to produce after 1790. Royalists became royalists because of the particular form of their relationship to those who became "patriots" in the decades preceeding 1790. Secondly, royalism cannot be explained exclusively in terms of local and regional tensions. Royalists occupied a particular place within the hierarchy of functions which articulated the relationship between Nimes and its hinterland. Rather, therefore, than deducing royalism from tensions at one particular level - whether of the village, small town, region or city - this study has sought to explain royalism in terms of the relationship between these different levels, and of the manner in which contemporaries sought to understand this relationship. The argument pursued throughout this study is that royalism in the South-East can be seen as one possible "solution" to the "problem" of social mobility in eighteenth century France.</text>

                <text>La mise en patrimoine des espaces publics est aujourd'hui une réalité. Mais si leur requalification s'inspire largement des modèles du passé, les espaces publics sont l'objet de nombreuses transformations qui semblent aller bien au-delà d'une simple muséification. Replacés récemment au cœur des politiques publiques, ils constituent en fait un outil au service d'objectifs bien plus larges. Comment les pouvoirs publics se positionnent-ils par rapports aux héritages de la ville européenne ? En quoi les politiques publiques menées dans ce domaine intègrent-elles d'autres valeurs et d'autres enjeux contemporains, au sein de la métropole ? Pour répondre à ces questions, cet article se propose de mettre en regard deux métropoles européennes que tout semble opposer : Paris et Berlin. Y retrouve-t-on malgré tout le même processus ? Quelles significations particulières revêt-il dans l'une et l'autre de ces métropoles ?</text>

                <text>Economic reforms in rural China have brought opportunities to diversify both within-farm activities and off-farm activities. Participation in these activities plays an important role in increasing rural households' income. This paper analyzes the factors that drive rural households and individuals in their income-source diversification choices in a Northern China township. At the household level, we distinguish three types of diversification as opposed to grain production only: within farm (non-grain production) activities, local off-farm activities, and migration. We find that land availability stimulates on-farm diversification. Local off-farm activities are mostly driven by households' assets position and working resources, while migration decisions strongly depend on the household size and composition. At the individual level, we analyze the determinants of participation in three different types of jobs as compared to agricultural work: local off-farm employment, local self-employment and migration. We find a clear gender and age bias in access to off-farm activities that are mostly undertaken by male and by young people. The households' assets position as well as village networks are found to strongly affect participation in off-farm activities.</text>

More recently saturation in « peri-urban » boroughs has driven families to look to more remote rural boroughs for a piece of green land. This phenomenon is known as rurbanisation.
This article aims at determining whether this demographic revitalisation in rural areas is part of the same urban spreading process as périurbanisation and whether, by extension, the demographic content of this growth is similar in nature to the content which characterised the periurban surroundings Several residential areas - periurban boroughs, rural boroughs and small cities - around Namur in the centre of Walloonia have been identified. They have than been compared to the Brabant periurban model. This analysis reveals obvious social and demographic contrasts between Brabant and other residential areas. Walloon Brabant clearly appears as a socially and demographically privileged region, which can be explained by its central position in Belgium, by the fact that the périurbanisation process is rather ancient there and by the social selection caused by strong real-estate speculation. Differences between the other residential areas considered are minimal. Even if some whiffs of « demographic conservatism » can be noticed in those rural boroughs, the social and demographic characteristics of the families who have settled in those villages are practically identical to those of the Namur periurban boroughs.</text>
