It argues that certain urban societies are more robust than others because they offer socio-spatial capacities that enable the development of skills for coping with modern forms of living. It studies places that may open the way to an international culture, namely market places, venues for performing arts and religious sites, which – with particular reference to the Durkheimian tradition – are considered here in their quality as sanctuaries. From its empirical analysis of such sanctuaries in Tokyo, this book develops a more general theory about mega-cities, urban sociability and identity.

Anni Greve is Associate Professor in The Department of Society and Globalisation at Roskilde University.

</text>

</text>

A strong dynamics of appropriation facilitated the incursion of new human and financial resources into the Amazonian hinterland, especially during three last decades, when the realization of a ground network articulated the right bank of the big river. This network restructured the regional space, until then dominated by the rivers and a weak network of populated places, formed by small settlements at the edge of the inland waterways. Santarém, a historical city with a strategic localization between the two greater Amazonian urban centres, has been the theatre of enormous transformations since the construction of the road. The connection, via the Cuibá-Santarém road, with the Center-West region of Brazil and, via Transamazonian road, with the Brazilian North-East and Western Amazonia, started to play a significant role as articulator of the Northern area. At the same time, it became the principal focus of settlement of this vast central area, by organizing an emergent process of regional construction. </text>

<text>Profile of the Users of the Different Modern Health Care Services in the Central Benin.

According to which criteria do the Benineses choose among the rather diversified modern health care services now available ? This hypothesis was checked by studying over a two-years-period the structure, by sex, age, type of disease and place of origin, of the users of all the modern health care services (public, private and church supported) from the Ouessè district (Central Benin). It was found out that, the weaker the perceived therapeutical efficiency, the more numerous are the children and adult male users, the smaller the attraction area and the narrower the range of treated diseases with in parallel a strong increase in paludism cases.</text>

UN-HABITAT’s new Cities and Citizens series examines urban inequality in the developing world through in-depth analysis of intracity data developed by UN-HABITAT and its partner institutions and on-the-ground interviews, insights and images. São Paulo: A Tale of Two Cities launches the series, providing a close look at this vast megacity of internal contradictions and complexities. São Paulo has emerged as the economic powerhouse of Brazil, making huge advances in its socioeconomic and political sectors while remaining beset by inequalities and gaps in distributive justice.

Contents:

Introduction: Understanding urban dynamics inside cities

1. The dynamics of division

2. Urbanising Sao Paulo

3. Division through exclusion

4. A tale of two cities

5. The potential of policy to bridge the urban divide

6. The challenges ahead
