This paper considers the work of one of Indonesia&rsquo;s most prominent contemporary writers, Seno Gumira Ajidarma. In this paper, I look at how Seno&rsquo;s writing over the last 30 years traces and documents changes in contemporary Indonesian urban societies &ndash; and particularly that of Jakarta. This paper considers the importance and relevance of the notion of the urban based fl&acirc;neur and whether or not the fl&acirc;neur and the practice of fl&acirc;nerie is part of literary imaginings in contemporary Indonesia. I ask whether or not to be a fl&acirc;neur and to practice fl&acirc;nerie is a critical social act which questions formal constructions and usages of urban space. This paper looks at the ways in which the practices of listening, hearing, looking and writing are invoked in selected novels, short stories and essays of Seno Gumira Ajidarma.<br />

</text>

A qualitative approach, based on direct observation and in-depth interviews to women living in the neighbourhood has allowed us to study the women’s sense of place and belonging. </text>

<text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> &nbsp;</div> Our cities are &quot;smart&quot; and getting smarter as information processing capability is embedded throughout more and more of our urban infrastructure. Few of us object to traffic light control systems that respond to the ebbs and flows of city traffic; but we might be taken aback when discount coupons for our favorite espresso drink are beamed to our mobile phones as we walk past a Starbucks. Sentient City explores the experience of living in a city that can remember, correlate, and anticipate. Five teams of architects, artists, and technologists imagine a variety of future interactions that take place as computing leaves the desktop and spills out onto the sidewalks, streets, and public spaces of the city.<br /> <br /> &quot;Too Smart City&quot; employs city furniture as enforcers: a bench ejects a sitter who sits too long, a sign displays the latest legal codes and warns passersby against transgression, and a trashcan throws back the wrong kind of trash. &quot;Amphibious Architecture&quot; uses underwater sensors and lights to create a human-fish-environment feedback loop; &quot;Natural Fuse&quot; uses a network of &quot;electronically assisted&quot; plants to encourage energy conservation; &quot;Trash Track&quot; follows smart-tagged garbage on its journey through the city&rsquo;s waste-management system; and &quot;Breakout&quot; uses wireless technology and portable infrastructure to make the entire city a collaborative workplace.<br /> <br /> These projects are described, documented, and illustrated by 100 images, most in color. Essays by prominent thinkers put the idea of the sentient city in theoretical context.<br /> Copublication with the Architectural League of New York</div> &nbsp;</div> <b>Mark Shepard </b>is Assistant Professor of Architecture and Media Study at the University of Buffalo, State University of New York.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

&nbsp;</div>

</text>

Can we relate this phenomenon to a lack of interest in our sensorial perception of the city? Does this perception carry geographical implications? The main tool of this research is an element of the author’s anatomy: her nose, whose possibilities has been explored during all her field studies. Thanks to surveys and enquiries, the city-deweller’s relationship to his senses (and above all his smell) has been investigated in two different types of inhabited spaces: private spaces and a selection of public places that city-dwellers use on a regular basis (parks, shops, train platforms and passages). </text>

September 11th and the City

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote "The test of civilization is the power of drawing the most benefit out of cities." The test of terrorism, then, may well be the power to inflict the greatest harm to those same centers of culture, commerce, and exchange. This is something that the September 11 terrorists well understood. Mohamed Atta was a man well acquainted with the power and majesty of cities--and presumably their durability and resilience. He was trained as an engineer, architect and urban planner. Yet, warped by fundamentalism, Atta became the "perverted dreamer" that E. B. White imagined decades ago in Here is New York, a man who would "loose the lightning" on Manhattan and attempt to destroy it, symbolically and literally. And even as the rubble of the World Trade Center smoldered in the days and weeks following September 11, pundits in the United States, too, foretold of the death of downtown and the end of the city as we know it. But cities have endured trauma and violence for millennia, much of it far worse than that unleashed by Mohamed Atta on September 11. Any study of the city in history will reveal that human settlements possess an essential ability to resurrect themselves in the wake of devastation, a point that the Resilient City colloquium hopes to reaffirm.

Urban Trauma and the Resilience of Cities

This paper examines the near-ubiquity of urban resilience by analyzing the concepts of trauma, recovery, and remembrance. It questions the definition of "resilience," by exploring the relationship between recovery of the built environment and other ways that a "return to normalcy" may be measured. Urban trauma, like urban resilience, takes many forms, and can be categorized in many ways. First, there is the scale of destruction-which may range from a small single precinct to an entire city (or, potentially, an even larger area). Second, one may rank these traumas in terms of their human toll, as measured by deaths and disruption of lives. Third, one may organize these destructive acts according to their presumed cause-some result from the largely-uncontrollable forces of nature, such as earthquakes and floods; others are hybrids of natural forces and human action, such as fires; while still others result more wholly from deliberate human will, whether executed by conquering armies, aerial bombardment, or terrorist strikes. It is not enough to ask general questions about urban recovery; we must ask who recovers which aspects of the city, and by what mechanisms. The process of post-disaster recovery is a window into the power structure of the society that has been stricken. Similarly, to ask about remembrance is to inquire how what is remembered gets constructed, when, and by whom.
