For decades, neighbourhoods been pivotal sites of social, economic and political exclusion processes, and civil society initiatives, attempting bottom-up strategies of re-development and regeneration. In many cases these efforts resulted in the creation of socially innovative organizations, seeking to satisfy the basic human needs of deprived population groups, to increase their political capabilities and to improve social interaction both internally and between the local communities, the wider urban society and political world.

SINGOCOM - Social INnovation GOvernance and COMmunity building – is the acronym of the EU-funded project on which this book is based. Sixteen case studies of socially-innovative initiatives at the neighbourhood level were carried out in nine European cities, of which ten are analysed in depth and presented here. The book compares these efforts and their results, and shows how grass-roots initiatives, alternative local movements and self-organizing urban collectives are reshaping the urban scene in dynamic, creative, innovative and empowering ways. It argues that such grass-roots initiatives are vital for generating a socially cohesive urban condition that exists alongside the official state-organized forms of urban governance.

The book is thus a major contribution to socio-political literature, as it seeks to overcome the duality between community-development studies and strategies, and the solidarity-based making of a diverse society based upon the recognising and maintaining of citizenship rights. It will be of particular interest to both students and researchers in the fields of urban studies, social geography and political science.

Approaching the subject from a unique vantage point, Canadian Urban Regions: Trajectories of Growth and Change brings together some of the most respected scholars in the discipline to discuss important developments and examine the path urban geography in Canada is following. The organization of this text will help upper-level students studying urban geography to expand on concepts already gleaned in their introductory years-it moves from a theoretical framework, on to practical case studies, and then to a discussion of where the discipline is headed in the future. By providing insight into both theoretical perspectives and contemporary views, this text fully encompasses the changes and challenges in Canadian urban geography today.

</text>

                <text>The excess mortality related to the August 2003 heat-wave occurred with different intensity according to places: it was more important in Île-de-France and in the Centre region that in other areas of France. Its impact was more massive in urban environment than in the rural communes. In Paris, the expression of the excess mortality was clearly exacerbated with an increase of almost 190% of mortality between 1st and August 20th 2003 compared to the previous years. However, this extra-mortality did not occur in a homogeneous way in the city. The analysis of the space disparities of mortality in the city was led on the deaths domiciled according to two levels of aggregation, the districts (20) and the quarters (80). It rests, in other, on the cartography of simple indicators of mortality (standardized ratio of mortality) and of excess mortality. The determination of the factors of social risks (socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population) and contextual (temperature, pollution) is based on the construction of a Poisson regression model. In 2003 a space structure of mortality very different from that of the previous years review was highlighted: it is characterized by a pole of excess mortality in the south of the city. This shift of mortality is the result of a narrow intrication between socio-economic factors and other factors, such as the levels of pollution or the intra-urban variations of temperature. Beyond the dramatic dimension of this without precedent event, the study puts forward the social and economic precariousness of a part of the old population in the capital. This study thus stresses in a strong way the importance of the links between various dimensions (medical, social and contextual) of a health phenomenon. </text>

In Cape Town, is hardening inequality under conditions of neoliberal globalization actually reproducing the repressive governance of the apartheid era? By exploring issues of urban security and development, Tony Roshan Samara brings to light the features of urban apartheid that increasingly mark not only Cape Town but also the global cities of our day—cities as diverse as Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, and Beijing.

Cape Town after Apartheid focuses on urban renewal and urban security policies and practices in the city center and townships as this aspiring world-class city actively pursues a neoliberal approach to development. The city’s attempt to escape its past is, however, constrained by crippling inequalities, racial and ethnic tensions, political turmoil, and persistent insecurity. Samara shows how governance in Cape Town remains rooted in the perceived need to control dangerous populations and protect a somewhat fragile and unpopular economic system. In urban areas around the world, where the affluent minority and poor majority live in relative proximity to each other, aggressive security practices and strict governance reflect and reproduce the divided city.

A critical case for understanding a transnational view of urban governance, especially in highly unequal, majority-poor cities, this closely observed study of postapartheid Cape Town affords valuable insight into how security and governance technologies from the global North combine with local forms to create new approaches to social control in cities across the global South.

</text>

                <text>
Abstract from the publisher:

Capital cities today remain central to both nations and states. They host centres of political power, not only national, but in some cases regional and global as well, thus offering major avenues to success, wealth and privilege. For these reasons capitals simultaneously become centres of 'counter-power', locations of high-stakes struggles between the government and the opposition.

This volume focuses on capital cities in nine sub-Saharan African countries, and traces how the power vested in them has evolved through different colonial backgrounds, radically different kinds of regimes after independence, waves of popular protest, explosive population growth and in most cases stunted economic development. Starting at the point of national political emancipation, each case study explores the complicated processes of nation-state building through its manifestation in the 'urban geology' of the city – its architecture, iconography, layout and political use of urban space. Although the evolution of each of these cities is different, they share a critical demographic feature: an extraordinarily rapid process of urbanisation that is more politically than economically driven. Overwhelmed by the inevitable challenges resulting from this urban sprawl, the governments seated in most of these capital cities are in effect both powerful – wielding power over their populace – and powerless, lacking power to implement their plans and to provide for their inhabitants.

In its concentration on urban forms of multi-layered power, symbolic as well as material, Capital Cities in Africa cuts a new path in the rich field of studies related to African cities and politics. It will be of interest to scholars in a wide range of disciplines, from political history, to sociology, to geography, architecture and urban planning.

</text>

                <text>Along the history, the role played by the cities was important both for the development of the mercantile capitalism as for the growth of the industrial capitalism, by means of the national markets building. The financial capital, whose logic is inherent in a globalized environment, was also constituted at the cities, reinforcing the relationships among markets, including the emergent ones. In these countries some of the cities are highlighted and got strategic importance incorporating functions that transcend the boundaries of the countries where they are located. In this article are taken three of the cities of these countries – Mumbai, São Paulo and Joannesburg – and examined the composition of their Stock Exchange indices. These organizations, due to its multiscale dimensions, lead to the comprehension of the logic, the direction and the intensity of the investments insertion in the global economy. The study shows not only the weight of commodities in correlation with those indexes, but also the regionalized distribution of the investments referred to each of the Stock Exchanges. </text>

</text>
