<text><div><b>Abstract from the publisher : </b></div> &nbsp;</div> Widely praised as the definitive history of Beirut, this is the story of a city that has stood at the crossroads of Mediterranean civilization for more than four thousand years. The last major work completed by Samir Kassir before his tragic death in 2005, Beirut is a tour de force that takes the reader from the ancient to the modern world, offering a dazzling panorama of the city's Seleucid, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and French incarnations. Kassir vividly describes Beirut's spectacular growth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, concentrating on its emergence after the Second World War as a cosmopolitan capital until its near destruction during the devastating Lebanese civil war of 1975-1990. Generously illustrated and eloquently written, Beirut illuminates contemporary issues of modernity and democracy while at the same time memorably recreating the atmosphere of one of the world's most picturesque, dynamic, and resilient cities.</div> &nbsp;</div> The late <b>Samir Kassir </b>taught at the Institut des Sciences Politiques of the Universit&eacute; Saint-Joseph in Beirut, worked as a journalist and editorial writer for the daily An-Nahar newspaper there, and was a co-founder of the Democratic Left Movement in Lebanon.</div> &nbsp;</div> </text>

<text>China’s rapid urbanization has restructured the great socialist cities Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou into mega cities that embrace global capitalism. This book focuses on the urban transformations of these three cities: Beijing is the nation’s political and cultural capital; Shanghai is the economic and financial powerhouse; and Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and the regional center of south China. All are historical cities with rich imperial, colonial, and regional heritages, and all have been drastically transformed in the last six decades.

This book examines the cities’ continuous urban legacies since 1949 in relation to state governance, economic reforms, and cultural production. By adopting local historical perspectives, it offers more nuanced accounts of the current urban change than the modernization/globalization paradigm and conceptualizes the change in the context of the cities’ socialist, colonial, and imperial legacies. Specifically, Samuel Y. Liang offers an overview of the urban planning and territorial expansion of the great cities since 1949; explores the production and consumption of urban housing, its spatial forms, media representations, and socio-political implications; and examines the state-led redevelopment of old urban cores and residential neighborhoods, and the urban conservation movement.

Social and natural rhythms compose the immediate, intuitive expression of urban ambiences. In this artistic research project the intention is to, by experimentation, reveal qualities, temporal aspects and embodied perceptions of the social ambience situations that constitute the corporeal collective rhythm of the city. Immersed in the situation, in situ, as pedestrians, citizens, artists and researchers we take part in and invite "the audience" to participate in playful events. "Bodies in motion" serve as scale, tool and reference system in methodological approaches, based on concepts as resonance, improvisations and variations, as both descriptions of urban life and practical tools for collective actions.</text>

<text>The Paris cityscape, which is largely a product of the transformations effected under the Second Empire by the Prefect Haussmann and the City administration, is astonishing for its degree of uniformity. However, on closer inspection, Haussmannien thoroughfares present all sorts of irregularities depending on which streets we examine. In this paper, we analyze in detail those deformities by studying a highly atypical Haussmannien thoroughfare: Rue des Pyrénées in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. Once the deformity has been identified, hypotheses are developed to explain it in relation to the specific actions of the plot owners and o the socio-politico-economical context.</text>

<text>In this paper, we establish an appraisal of research on earthbound transport exchange systems in order to identify findings of interest for both goods and passenger transport. Closing the gap between these two fields of research could improve both research itself and the management practices in both fields. To meet this objective, we first sought to identify “missing issues” (subjects addressed in one field and ignored in the other). We then tried to test common hypotheses in case studies in the two sectors. We finally explored the transfer of methodologies from one sector to the other.</text>
