The city in the twenty-first century is in the midst of dramatic changes, and yet many have yet to fully manifest themselves, still concealed in technology and distributed enough to escape general understanding within the existing context of built form. Technology may be outpacing urban architectural theory, and large populations (primarily the young generation who are growing up with computers and mobile phones) are altering the identity, use and ultimately the form of cities. What is this changing identity? The present thesis asserts that if the "first generation" of cities was characterized by built forms and spaces, and the "second generation" defined by mobility, then the "third generation" of cities will certainly be "hyperdynamic", that is, technological, dematerialized, unprogrammed, emergent, adaptable and virtual, if they are to serve the needs and behaviors of their inhabitants. A theory of these three generations coexisting, much like archaeological strata, in the form of three conceptual urban layers is presented, along with consideration of the possible relationships between them. A case study set in the city of Ljubljana highlights emerging changes in the perception of the city and focuses specifically on the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, a unique urban feature set against the background of Ljubljana's history, technologies and ways of thinking about cities. The case study forms a basis for talking about future trends and the potential for an expanded lexicon of urban dynamics.
Les villes du 21ème siècle font l’objet de changements spectaculaires, pour certaines d’entre elles ces changements sont en cours, encore dissimulés dans la technologie et suffisamment intégrés dans le contexte actuel de la forme architecturale pour échapper à la compréhension générale. La technologie a dépassé la théorie de l’architecture urbaine, et une population importante (principalement la jeune génération qui a grandi avec les ordinateurs et les téléphones mobiles) est en train de changer l’identité de la ville et, par conséquent, la définition des villes. Que signifie ce changement d’identité ? Cette thèse affirme que la première génération de villes est caractérisée par des formes des constructions et par l’aménagement des espaces, la seconde génération est soumise à la mobilité, et la troisième génération de villes sera certainement hyper dynamique, c’est-à-dire technologique, dématérialisée, non-programmée, émergente, adaptable et virtuelle, pour qu’elle puisse couvrir les besoins et les comportements de ses habitants. Une théorie de la coexistence de ces 3 générations, un peu comme une strate archéologique formée de trois couches urbaines conceptuelles, prend en considération ces relations entre elles. Cette étude dans le cadre de la ville de Ljubljana met en évidence ces changements émergents dans la perception de la ville et souligne spécialement sur "Le chemin de la commémoration et de la camaraderie", une caractéristique urbaine unique dans le contexte de l’histoire de Ljubjana, les technologies et les façons de penser nos villes. L’étude de ce cas constitue une base de discussions sur les futures perspectives et le potentiel d’un lexique élargi de la dynamique urbaine.

Research has concentrated on the role of city-states and their republican polities as harbingers of the modern state, or else on their artistic and cultural achievements, above all in Italy. Much less attention has been devoted to the cities' territorial expansion: why, how, and with what consequences cities in the urban belt, stretching from central and northern Italy over the Alps to Switzerland, Germany, and the low countries, succeeded (or failed) in constructing sovereign polities, with or without dependent territories.<br /> <br /> Tom Scott goes beyond the customary focus on the leading Italian city-states to include, for the first time, detailed coverage of the Swiss city-states and the imperial cities of Germany. He criticizes current typologies of the city-state in Europe advanced by political and social scientists to suggest that the city-state was not a spent force in early modern Europe, but rather survived by transformation and adaption. This thesis is a social history of Bombay city in the first quarter of the twentieth century. It explores material changes in urban life consequent upon the impact of modernity and the varied range of contestations of the colonial order which they provoke. The first chapter outlines the specific nature of colonial modernism and shows its impact on the city's spatial forms and on its social relations. Representing a highly selective, power-driven, and essentially technological manipulation of modernity, it ensures distorted and differential outcomes within urban society. These conditions are considerably aggravated by the sudden impact of the First World War, the subject of the second chapter. The War increases material scarcities, worsens conditions of urban life, widens disparities between rich and poor, and intensifies colonial repression. At the same time, the crisis of war brings to the city the full potential of the revolution in communications which carries a modem discourse of civic rights. In the city, Homiman and sections of the bilingual urban intelligentsia rapidly vernacularize this discourse and diffuse it into new social contexts. This is perceived by the local colonial state as seriously threatening and subversive. The third chapter shows how Gandhi's anti-modernist rejection of the city leads to his attempts to control, and in some aspects reverse, this gathering urban momentum for an expansion in citizenship rights. The final chapter considers the new visions of urban citizenship expressed in the agitation for an expansion of civil and democratic rights, and in labour protest movements. This critical modernism looks to the future, rather than to the past, and acts as a force to humanise the city, presenting an alternative and potentially more radical challenge to the colonial state than the Gandhian movement.

Le mouvement migratoire ville-campagne se poursuit en Grande-Bretagne : tendances, modèles , signification.
La migration nette depuis les zones urbaines vers les espaces ruraux reste la dimension la plus importante des dynamiques de distribution du peuplement à l'intérieur de la Grande-Bretagne. Son ampleur change avec le temps mais confirme un processus de 'counterurbanization cascade' distribuant la population vers le bas de la hiérarchie urbaine. Une large frange de la population prend part à ce mouvement, à l'exception toutefois des jeunes adultes et des groupes minoritaires ethniques. On peut attribuer ce processus à de nombreuses causes, comme dans d'autres pays. Cependant, ici on propose d'expliquer, en particulier par deux causes, pourquoi ce processus se manifeste plus fort et plus constamment en Grande-Bretagne. Il s'agit de la politique de 'l' urban containment' et d'une préférence clairement exprimée par le peuple britannique pour une vie à la campagne.
Urban-rural net migration remains the principal dimension of internal migration within Britain. Though its volume varies over time, there is a very consistent process of population movement down the urban hierarchy that can be called the 'counterurbanization cascade'. This involves a wide cross-section of the British population, though young adults and minority ethnic groups are not well represented. This process can be attributed to many factors, as in other countries, but two in particular are put forward to explain why it is more fully developed and persistent in Britain. These are the policy of urban containment and the strength of people's preferences for living in the countryside.

This paper presents the experience and some results in the incorporation of the concept of ambience in the studies and intervention projects aimed at environmental policies within CETESB, Environmental Company of São Paulo State. The environmental impact studies have shown, in general, a fragmented approach of human beings and their actions. These studies do not give visibility to the lives of people and their interaction with their biophysical environment and the methodologies that have emerged reinforce an analytical fragmentation of reality which in turn requires a new look. And the notion of ambience has allowed a new look, because it leads to the comprehension of these multiple dimensions that can not be separated, which confers this notion on a fundamental articulate power to understand the city and urban space in these multiple dimensions involved.

Anderson’s path-breaking study of this setting provides a new understanding of the complexities of present-day race relations and reveals the unique opportunities here for cross-cultural interaction.<br /> <br /> Anderson walks us through Center City Philadelphia, revealing and illustrating through his ethnographic fieldwork how city dwellers often interact across racial, ethnic, and social borders. People engage in a distinctive folk ethnography. Canopies operating in close proximity create a synergy that becomes a cosmopolitan zone. In the vibrant atmosphere of these public spaces, civility is the order of the day. However, incidents can arise that threaten and rend the canopy, including scenes of tension involving borders of race, class, sexual preference, and gender. But when they do—assisted by gloss—the resilience of the canopy most often prevails. In this space all kinds of city dwellers—from gentrifiers to the homeless, cabdrivers to doormen—manage to co-exist in the urban environment, gaining local knowledge as they do, which then helps reinforce and spread tolerance through contact and mutual understanding.<br /> <br /> With compelling, meticulous descriptions of public spaces such as 30th Street Station, Reading Terminal Market, and Rittenhouse Square, and quasi-public places like the modern-day workplace, Anderson provides a rich narrative account of how blacks and whites relate and redefine the color line in everyday public life. We develop a new methodology to estimate the elasticity of urban costs with respect to city population using French land price data. Our preferred estimate, which handles a number of estimation concerns, stands at 0.041. Our approach also yields a number of intermediate outputs of independent interest such as a distance gradient for land prices and the elasticity of unit land prices with respect to city population. For the latter, our preferred estimate is 0.72.

This paper deals with the cultural policy and strategy of Rotterdam, in particular with regard to its designation as 'European City of Culture' for the year 2001. Having been a port and manufacturing city for many years, with a large proportion of lowly educated people, the city's first goal has been for many years to ameliorate the cultural climate of the city to the benefit of its residents. Since 1987, however, this cultural policy more and more received a market-oriented emphasis. The eternal rivalry with Amsterdam, the absolute cultural capital of the country, and the expectation that a cultural image would enhance the attractiveness of the city for economic investments, are the main factors in this reorientation. Rotterdam's prospects in the market of international urban tourism are, however, weak, because this city does not possess an attractive historical core. Therefore, modern architecture has become the trademark of Rotterdam.

This paper combines both quantitative and qualitative methods to provide supplemental information and results that clarify the reasons that individuals devote ample time to travel.<br />Through a quantitative analysis of travel-time budgets (TTB) in seven cities (Zurich, Bern, Geneva, Rennes, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Grenoble), the research initially establishes the relationship between the amount of daily travel time allocated and socio-demographic characteristics of individuals and households. The application of a duration model method additionally highlights the influence of diverse types of activities at the destination on TTB. Our analysis confirms that the overall TTB of individuals has increased over roughly the past ten years, with Swiss cities possessing higher travel times than French ones. In many cities, around 20% of our samples also devote excessive amounts of time to travel. The duration model therefore indicates an atypical individual behavior not explained by the covariates of the model. Conversely, other dimensions could certainly explain the choices or obligations that influence these high TTB.<br /> Accordingly, in-depth interviews are given to individuals that travel during the week for longer than 2 hours a day. Their profiles provide several explanations to the reasons behind their choice (or obligation) to spend major amounts of time in daily travel. Consequently, the allocation of travel time of a person is not solely determined by the activities at a destination, but also by individual aspects. Additionally, travel time is perceived as time when other activities can be performed simultaneously (ex. working on the train, listening to music, etc.).

In a process of territorial restructuring, there are potential disputes, which often reveal both local and national geopolitical challenges and issues. Two related questions concerning provincial and municipal demarcation are frequently at stake, firstly, the issue of the extent of administrative cities' hinterlands in terms of jurisdiction; and secondly the issue of political administrative leadership between cities fitted in a single territorial unit. After presenting the theoretical hypothesis, this paper will focus on the issue of municipal delineation around secondary cities and small towns in post-apartheid South Africa.

The deployment of urban logistics solutions is one of the main pending questions in the field of urban goods transport research and practice. Indeed, although several solutions and projects have been tested in the last years, only few of them reach an operational phase and remain viable in time. Through the example of a recently finished demonstration project, this paper presents the main issues related to the deployment of urban logistics solutions form research and development results. More precisely, this paper aims to focus on how the conclusions of pilot actions can be used to forecast the possibilities of deployment for an urban logistics service. First, we present the main stages in deploying a technological or organizational solution, based on the FREILOT project's deployment research and analysis. Then, one of the analysed technologies in the project is presented: the delivery space booking service. After presenting the main business model elements, an example of cost-benefit analysis is proposed, defining the method and the main hypotheses, as well as the main conclusions from the analysis. Then, the main barriers to the deployment of delivery space boking devices are presented. Finally, the paper shows a set of guidelines for public authorities and transport practitioners to deploy urban logistics solutions.

The theme of this article is the green dimension of urban and architecture design in Yazd as an oasis in the middle of deserts in the centre of Iran where people were able to adapt to very hard climate condition through millenniums. Studying the residential tissues in this area shows that the architectural characteristics of the ancient and traditional parts of habitation complex - before been modernized- are according to the new paradigms of eco-architecture, sustainability and ecological city theories at a time when the global environment appears increasingly fragile.<br />Native architecture in the desert is the consequence of experience-based knowledge acquired through trial and error over time and often handed down through the generations in a long process of construction, the local climate representation, materials, sensibilities, and style of life. Traditions of vernacular architecture have many lessons for seeking sustainable forms. There is much to commend the common-sense approach to energy conservation and environmental protection practiced, however unknowingly, by many builders in the past. The aims of this study are to give an overview of Iranian vernacular architecture in the perspective of sustainability.

Devon has a high proportion of the national total of private residential homes for the elderly in England. This paper traces their growth and their spatial distribution, based on a detailed survey of about one in four homes in the county. The nature of the homes as small businesses in then focused upon, which are mainly private family businesses although heavily supported by public funds. However, changing national legislation and local development and interpretation of regulation create considerable uncertainty as to the future of this sector of care for the elderly. The paper concludes with a consideration of the current policy dilemmas in Devon.

Cette étude décrit leur prolifération et leur distribution géographique, en employant des données tirées d'une enquête portant sur environ une maison sur quatre dans le comté. Ensuite est traitée leur situation en tant qu'entreprises privées : ce sont des entreprises familiales pour la plupart, bien qu'elles profitent dans une large mesure des fonds publics. L'avenir de ce type de soins pour les personnes âgées est pourtant incertain, en raison de la nouvelle législation et de l'interprétation des règlements. La migration à l'âge de la retraite est une expression des occasions qu'une société offre à ses retraités et aux aspirations de confort de vie de la population plus âgée. Cet article discute la proposition qu'il existe deux phases de la vieillesse en ce qui concerne les populations d'Europe occidentale. D'abord, une période de relative richesse et bonne santé pour les plus jeunes, puis une détérioration de la santé, de plus bas revenus et une dépendance accrue pour les plus vieux. L'article analyse ensuite les localisations optimales en fonction des deux stades de la vieillesse et il discute du rôle des migrations sur la redistribution des deux groupes d'âge entre zones urbaines et rurales.
Migration around the age of retirement is an expression of the opportunities a society gives to its retired people and to the housing and life-style aspirations held by the older population. This article discusses the proposition that two phases of old age have developed among the affluent populations of western Europe. First, a period of relative poaffluence and good health among young elderly people, and secondly, a later period of poorer health, lower income and increased dependency. The optimum locations for the two stages are described, and the effect of migrations among elderly people in redistribute the two age groups among urban and rural areas is discussed.

Le développement de la population hongroise et son habitat en Slovaquie
Depuis que les Hongrois de Slovaquie sont devenus une minorité en 1918-1920, leur nombre, leur répartition et la taille de la région qu'ils habitent ont beaucoup changé. Les événements dramatiques de l'histoire de ce siècle en sont la cause essentielle. Cet article donne une vue d'ensemble et insiste sur leurs impacts spécifiques sur la taille et la distribution spatiale de la minorité hongroise. Il analyse ensuite le caractère hongrois de la région qu'ils peuplent associé à l'existence d'un « habitat hongrois ». Puis il propose une réflexion sur l'impact des politiques mises en œuvre sur la taille et l'habitat de cette minorité hongroise.
Since they became a minority in 1918/1920, the number of Hungarians in Slovakia and the shape and size of the region they inhabit have change significantly. These changes were mainly caused by this century's main dramatic historical events. The paper gives an overview of these events and focuses on their specific impact on the size and spatial distribution of the Hungarian minority. Ensuing, it investigates the Hungarian region and the Hungarian character of this region, which is referred to in the paper as the Hun garian habitat. A reflection on the impact of the radical political and economic changes of the post-communist era on the size and habitat of the Hungarian minority constitute the final part of this paper.

la population âgée du Royaume-Uni et sa distribution.
Sauf nouvelle baisse importante de la fécondité, le vieillissement démographique de la population britannique est presque achevé. Pendant une vingtaine d'années, il y a eu peu de changement dans la population âgée de 60 ans et plus, mais après l'an 2000, l'accroissement recommencera en raison de l'arrivée à l'âge de la retraite des cohortes nées de 1947 à 1966. Les personnes âgées habitent principalement des grandes cités, mais la distribution géographique particulière des zones où elles sont surreprésentées est précisée. Parmi ces zones figurent les régions maritimes de Grande- Bretagne, en raison des migrations de retraite des habitants des grandes concentrations urbaines.
The paper falls into three parts: firstly, an overview of the geography of the elderly in Northern Ireland is presented; secondly, a more detailed discussion of the position in the city of Belfast is developed; and thirdly, the paper concludes with a projection of the elderly population of Northern Ireland up to the year 201 1 . The opportunity has been taken to build on the paper published in Geographical Perspectives on the Elderly in 1982 by concentrating on change since 1971.
