</text>

<text>In the following weeks after the 11th September attacks, the American Jewish press underscores in its editorials two ways of what being Jewish means, today, in America. The first one is connected with neighbourhood, with the daily life places. The second way is more international. According to the main American Jewish institutions, the Jewish identity must have other territorial marks: the United States of America, Israel, and, finally, all the countries of the Diaspora, where Jewish populations live. Studying the American Jewish press allows, then, in order to underscore a new geography of the American Jews’ identity. Indeed, their newspapers have several territorial logics. The first one consists in their deliveries that make ethnic press to be a judicious residential indication. The second one insists on the places the adverts and editorials deal with. Their cartography is more than a residential indication; it is also a cultural and economic one. This exercise of interpretation puts forward an ambiguity in the American Jewish identity structure: to the fighting as a group, in order to maintain a dynamic cultural and political Diaspora network, answer more individualistic political behaviours, which are basic American ones. On the one hand, the Jewish cultural specificity survival; on the other hand, the assimilation process. The Jewish identity in the United States of America is, thus, no more a religious, ritual nor a traditional one. It has become a political identity. </text>

</text>

<text>The evolution of ports in modern times has been defined by a change in port functions, caused by such factors as the development of technology on ships, of support equipment for the transport of merchandise or storage techniques, changes in the standards of international commerce, changes to the organisation of maritime transportation or the growth and increased complexity of global logistic chains. As a result of these changes, there has been a simultaneous evolution in the structure, morphology and extent of the spaces occupied by ports and complementary activities. In this context, the relationship between the port and city of Lisbon (Portugal) is characterised by a great complexity imprinted from the onset through the historic traditions that it holds and through the magnitude and intensity of a process that involves the main infra-structure of the national port system and the country’s largest city. It can be noted, however, that a symbiotic port-city relationship, in which the port exerted a structural role in the organisation of the city and its functions, has developed into a relationship where the city, the hub of a regional urban system and a main element within the peninsular and European urban network, has become autonomous and developed a generalised character, economically diverse and functionally complex. Despite this evolution, the port remains a nodal point in the integration of the city-region in global systems of physical and non-physical fluxes. As it becomes increasingly less integrated in the urban and functional structure of the city, the port continues to keep the pace of important changes and transformations In effect, in light of theoretical conceptualisation and systemisation and analyses of empirical evidence, the evolution of the relationship between the port and the city of Lisbon (focussing on functional, urban and economic dimensions) can be analysed and a plan outlined to determine an original model that identifies, explains and characterises the main phases of the relationship dynamic. </text>

<text>This thesis is about shrinking cities and planning. Urban growth has been a synonym of success throughout the world; and even considered the true and sole reason for planning. Even though shrinkage is as old as growth, it has become more visible since unquestionable facts started to challenge conservative and established planning paradigms. Consequently, the theory of shrinkage is still under development, gradually building up. Portugal is not an exception to this rule. This presents an opportunity to contribute to the theory of shrinkage, to find original evidence about shrinkage in Portugal and investigate how planning is dealing with this issue.

The first part of the dissertation corresponds to a literature review to assemble a theoretical framework for shrinkage and its relation with urban and regional planning. The second part of the research focuses on the Portuguese case, first on a macro scale and then materializing the city scale of shrinkage. In the third part, cluster analysis is used to classify the Portuguese shrinking cities. Finally, plan content analysis is applied to national, regional and local spatial planning instruments to determine responsiveness to shrinkage.

The study is completed by revisiting the most important questions both in the theoretical discussion and the empirical research. Together with the theoretical analysis, the results comprise, firstly a broad picture of shrinkage; secondly, a typology of shrinking cities; and thirdly, an account of the awareness and approach to shrinkage in Portugal. The research concludes that despite the embryonic character of shrinkage in Portugal there is evidence of its existence, although planning’s response does not match evidence found. Recommendations for city policy, planning practitioners and future research on this topic are offered based on the findings. </text>

</text>

<text>The excess mortality related to the August 2003 heat-wave occurred with different intensity according to places: it was more important in Île-de-France and in the Centre region that in other areas of France. Its impact was more massive in urban environment than in the rural communes. In Paris, the expression of the excess mortality was clearly exacerbated with an increase of almost 190% of mortality between 1st and August 20th 2003 compared to the previous years. However, this extra-mortality did not occur in a homogeneous way in the city. The analysis of the space disparities of mortality in the city was led on the deaths domiciled according to two levels of aggregation, the districts (20) and the quarters (80). It rests, in other, on the cartography of simple indicators of mortality (standardized ratio of mortality) and of excess mortality. The determination of the factors of social risks (socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population) and contextual (temperature, pollution) is based on the construction of a Poisson regression model. In 2003 a space structure of mortality very different from that of the previous years review was highlighted: it is characterized by a pole of excess mortality in the south of the city. This shift of mortality is the result of a narrow intrication between socio-economic factors and other factors, such as the levels of pollution or the intra-urban variations of temperature. Beyond the dramatic dimension of this without precedent event, the study puts forward the social and economic precariousness of a part of the old population in the capital. This study thus stresses in a strong way the importance of the links between various dimensions (medical, social and contextual) of a health phenomenon. </text>
