Such qualities are not universally seen as representing positive attributes in a country in which the traditional city is regarded with a certain degree of political and popular suspicion and which is continually elaborating new forms of exurbia.<br /> <br /> Understanding New York&rsquo;s very particular nature and its prospects is an essential part of coming to terms with the evolving nature of the contemporary city, as it faces up to the reality of the extraordinary size jump of the later years of the 20th century. Scores of cities now have populations far larger than entire European nations. A city with an effective population of 18 million people - now the size of both New York and London - is an entity with no historic precedent. This regionalization is in part the result of two processes: barrio formation and barrio differentation. The former is a multi-stage process of development mediated by social networks wherein Puerto Ricans use their ethnic and social bonds as a strategy to cope with drastic social and economic change both in the island and in the mainland. Three main stages of barrio formation can be identified: colonia formation, colonia expansion, and barrio maturation. During the latter two stages of barrio formation, population dynamics, economic restructuring, urban renewal and urban policies, and sociocultural dynamics are the four main factors of differentiation which transform the spatial/residential, family/household, labor-market, and organizational characteristics of barrios and their residents. The result of this process of barrio differentiation is barrios which exhibit a mix of characteristics from three types of barrios: working-class barrios, underclass barrios, and ethnic enclaves. Our research has shown that the mix of characteristics exhibited by barrios is critically framed and defined by the factors of differentiation. However, in some specific instances the mix of characteristics can be countervailed by the interaction between human agency and the factors of differentiation. To investigate this process of barrio formation and differentiation our research compared three case-studies of development of Puerto Rican communities in Lowell, Lawrence and Holyoke, Massachusetts between the late 1950's and the early 1990's. In all three cities the colonias formed as a result of a dual situation of employment instability in Puerto Rico and in the US, and of the conditions of social hardship and isolation in the new locales. Over the course of the so-called early modern period the civilizing process unfurled both at the individual level and within society as a whole. At its heart lies the idea that one form of individual habitus or social organization in a larger sense claims to have ascended above previous stages of linear development. This paradigm of modernity emerged in the Netherlands during the seventeenth century and was intimately tied to the social dynamics of Dutch early modern urbanization and to concomitant transformations in the countryside. Urban and rural forms of social organization increasingly grew apart and this allowed attributing to urban and rural areas as well as to their respective inhabitants the very characteristics that associated the former more closely and the latter more remotely with the benefits of civilization and progress. This study in anthropological history assesses such early modern social dynamics between the urban and the rural by employing a model of civilized urban identity space, defined by four oppositional ideal types – the Burger, the Boer, the Pronckert and the Hovenier. This paper explores the idea that these processes are related with residential choices (or preferences) made by residents with divergent lifestyles and value patterns. The paper focuses on differences between urban and suburban lifestyles and residential preferences. Firstly the concept of lifestyles in general, and urban and suburban lifestyles more specifically, are approached. Secondly the results of a quantitative survey amongst residents within four neighbourhoods in the Ghent Region, a city in Belgium, are presented. This survey confirms that residents of urban and suburban zones have divergent lifestyles, but only for behavioural aspects, such as : private property protection, status behaviour and ecological behaviour. This results however in a social-spatial inequality and polarization between the urban centres and the suburban fringe. The shared aims amongst urban as well as suburban residents for a more secure residential environment and the ideal of the detached single-family house with private garden situated within a purely residential area, were identified as drivers for future suburban migrations.
