Through architecture and urban forms confrontations were crystallized, cultural identities were defined, and social engineering programs were shaped and challenged. In this pathbreaking book, Zeynep Çelik reads the city of Algiers as the site of social, political, and cultural conflicts during the 132 years of French occupation and argues that architecture and urban forms are integral components of the colonial discourse. Algiers' city planning, based on what Çelik calls "the trial-and-error" model of French colonial urbanism, included the fragmentation of the casbah, ambitious Beaux Arts schemes to create European forms of housing, master plans inspired by high modernism, and comprehensive regional plans. Eventually a dramatic housing shortage led all planning efforts to be centered on the construction of large-scale residential enclaves. French architects based their designs for domestic space on the concept of the "traditional house," itself an interdisciplinary colonial concept intertwined with the discourse on Algerian women. Housing also offered the French colonizers a powerful presence in a country where periodic resistance to the occupation eventually culminated in a seven-year war of liberation and an end to French rule. Extensively illustrated with photographs, maps, and housing plans, Çelik's book presents a fascinating example of colonial urban planning. As they lack knowledge on this particular subject, they tend to underestimate the importance of urban goods movements on their territory. Of this period a total of about fourteen months was spent carrying out field work and collecting data in Iran, whilst the remainder of the time was spent in acquiring an elementary knowledge of the Persian language, in learning some basic statistical techniques, and in analysing the data and writing up the results. The choice of the field of research was made on the basis of three main interests - urban studies, the application of quantitative techniques to geography, and the Middle East as a region, fostered by training in Durham both as a research student and an undergraduate. More specifically the subject was chosen as a contribution to what appears to be a relatively neglected field of urban studies - that is, the study of cities outside Europe and North America, and the relationship between urbanisation and socio-economic development in underdeveloped areas. It would appear that by far the greater part of urban research has been directed at cities of one particular culture area (Europe and North America) and both research techniques and generalisation about the nature of cities are as a result limited in scope by this. Yet 55% to 60% of the world's "urban" population lives in cities outside Europe and north America, so that the consideration of such cities is clearly of some importance. The classification systems of urban/rural areas differ from one country to another. As a consequence, international comparisons of urbanisation indicators or historical analyses of urban growth are difficult to establish. Urbanisation is indeed increasing, but how and where exactly? More in metropolises or in small towns? How many urban agglomerations are there in each country? The first part of the Africapolis programme provides new evidence with respect to West Africa. The Africapolis programme was commissioned by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to measure urbanisation and its patterns since the 1950s and project the results to 2020 more accurately than previous work on urbanisation in West Africa.
