The data used in this study are based on the Nigerian Living Standards Survey 2003-2004. The aggregate housing affordability model developed here measures housing affordability problems more accurately and classifies the housing affordability status of households more appropriately than the conventional affordability models. Findings show very high levels of housing affordability problems in Nigeria with about 3 out of every 5 urban households experiencing such difficulties. There are also significant housing affordability differences between socio-economic groups, housing tenure groups and states in Nigeria. The current national housing policy that de-emphasises government involvement in housing provision does not allow the country’s full potential for tackling its serious affordability problems to be realised and, hence, the laudable ‘housing for all’ goal of the policy has remained elusive. Nigerian socio-economic realities demand far more vigorous government involvement in housing development, working with a more committed private sector, energised civil societies and empowered communities to tackle the enormous housing problems of the country. In the last years, collaborative transportation seems a good city logistics alternative to classical urban consolidation centres, but it is still in a development stage. This paper proposes a framework for urban logistics pooling ex-ante evaluation. This framework is developed with two purposes. The first is to generate comparable contrasted or progressive scenarios representing realistic situations; the second to simulate and assess them to make a "before-after" comparative analysis. In this framework, a demand generation model is combined with a route optimization algorithm to simulate the resulting routes of the proposed individual or collaborative distribution schemes assumed by each scenario. Then, several indicators can be obtained, mainly travelled distances, working times, road occupancy rates and operational monetary costs. To illustrate that framework, several scenarios for the urban area of Lyon (France) are simulated and discussed to illustrate the proposed framework possible applications. The viewpoint focuses on exchanges of waters and wastes between city and river, quantifying them and tracing their evolution in the light of the strategies implemented by the stakeholders in charge. The study combines industrial ecology, local history and the history of technology.<br />From 1790 to 1850, waste matters, and especially excreta, were considered as raw materials, not refuse: they generated real profits. The removal of human excreta aimed not only at improving urban hygiene, but at producing the fertilizers needed in rural areas. Discharging them into the river was out of the question. But after the 1860s, several factors upset this exploitation, notably domestic water supply: night soil became more and more liquid, difficult to handle and to turn into fertilizer; once utilised, the water had to be removed from the house; at the same time, the sewerage system developed and had negative impacts on the river. Even so, Parisian engineers continued to process sewage using techniques that would not only ensure hygiene but also conciliate economic and agricultural interests: combined sewerage system and sewage farms. Both of these early periods are thus noteworthy for a relative limitation of the river's deterioration by urban wastes. Not until the 1920s, when domestic water supply had become the standard and excreta came to be considered as worthless waste, was the principle of valorisation abandoned. This led to important and long-lasting pollution of the Seine (despite the construction of a treatment plant), aggravating the industrial pollution that had been in evidence since the 1840s.<br />Analysing the priorities that led to the adoption of one principle or another in matters of urban hygiene and techniques, with the causes and consequences of such changes, enables us to understand the complex relations between Paris and the Seine. From raw material to waste matter, from river to drain, the concept of quality in environment remains the underlying theme. The primary focus of inquiry is to show the effects of inter-relationships between social change, intense urbanization and religious conversions that occurred within Sogdiana at this time. All of these processes were initiated as a result of the Arab invasions between 625 and 750 A.D. Sogdia or Sogdiana, along with the regions of Bactria and Khwarazm, were incorporated into the Islamic world through the process of conquest that followed these invasions, but once resistance was extinguished and Islam widely accepted among the populace, these regions became among the most vital centers of urban life in the Islamic world. Sogdiana, among these three regions, witnessed the rise, change and unprecedented development of many large metropolises that were distinct in several ways from the cities in other parts of the Islamic world. Traditional cities in the Islamic world further west and south of Central Asia had a dense structure within an encircling wall, and eventually the residential areas were found to extend beyond the wall, only themselves to be eventually protected by another wall. However, in Central Asia yet another further stage of development took place. Here the main administrative functions and markets moved out into this outer residential area and abandoned the central core. This outer area of the city (the rabad) became the locus of political and commercial activity. In due course the process repeated itself - the residential areas overflowing beyond the walls of the rabad, only themselves to be surrounded by a third outer wall. In this way the Central Asian city developed into a distinct type, markedly different from cities further west and south. Whitehand : </b></div>  </div> In this issue of Urban Morphology there are several contributions that combine, or consider the potential of combining, approaches that have hitherto had largely separate existences. Griffiths et al. combine Conzenian and space syntax approaches to the analysis of urban form (pp. 85-99), and conclude that the relationship between suburban built form and socioeconomic activity is both configurational and historical in nature. Stanilov considers the reciprocal benefits to be derived from linking urban modelling more closely with urban morphology (pp. 123-4). He argues that combining knowledge of land-use dynamics derived from urban modelling with knowledge of town plan and building typology gained from morphological analysis could be critical in developing understanding of how cities grow and change. He also envisages urban modelling as a medium for strengthening the place of urban morphology in the management of the built environment beyond its role in conservation. This standpoint is rather different from that adopted by Samuels (pp. 121-3). He makes the case for greater integration, but his focus is on the link between historical area assessment and urban morphology. This multi-scale problem is generally studied on a single sclae (local, meso or global) but seldom considering the total effect of network and urban units together. The articulation of several scales of pollutant observations (point measurement, streets, and urban area) is a particularly of the present work. Two objectives are defined: - precisely define the morphological elements which influence the pollutant distribution; - spatialize the measurements with the help of satellite data, taking benefits from previous results. This research project allows the combination of different scales, different methods and modeling approaches on streets and on the total urban area through different geographical data integration (GIS and Remote sensing). The point measurement sites were also reviewed according the morphological indicators designed through GIS applications. The BD(c)TOPO-IGN allows extraction of heights, surfaces and volumes on the urban area, which are injected in pollution modeling, and used for qualifying the point measurement sites. These morphological indicators are associated to dominant winds (frequencies and charges) and studied in order to highlight the difference between proximity pollution and "day to day" one. Such indicators need to be developed and tested in diverse situations to enhance the typology of measurement sites and strengthen their representativity.
